Chapter 56 University Life After Spring Break
“I… overslept.”
Glancing at my phone next to the bed, I saw the time: 10 a.m.
The first class started at 9, so there was no way I’d make it in time.
Looks like I forgot to set my alarm.
I didn’t think I’d mess up this badly on the very first day after spring break.
“Oh well…”
I tossed my phone onto the floor and rolled over.
Today was the first day of the semester, but there shouldn’t be any lectures where attendance points would be taken.
Usually, the first class is just a chance for students to decide whether they want to take the course or not.
Since I’d already looked through the syllabus and decided on my courses, sleeping through today shouldn’t cause any problems.
I had planned to check whether the professor’s teaching style suited me, but with how sleepy I felt, that wasn’t something I could bother thinking about right now.
Just as I was about to drift back to sleep, the doorbell rang.
“…Hm?”
It was probably a delivery.
I hadn’t left the house much toward the end of spring break, so I had a lot of packages—books and small items—delivered.
Luckily, my mailbox should still have space, so if I ignored it, they’d probably just drop the package in there.
Ding-dong.
––I had a bad feeling about this.
Ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong!
“Ugh, shut up!”
I stomped to the front door and yanked it open.
As expected, Shinohara was standing there.
This feels like déjà vu.
“Good morning, senpai! First day of university, huh? I figured you’d oversleep, so I came by!”
“How dare you interrupt my precious second sleep…”
“Alrighty, make way, please!”
Shinohara slipped past me with ease and walked into my apartment.
Resigned, I followed her, and as I did, I could feel my consciousness waking up.
Looks like there would be no going back to sleep now.
“Why are you in such a bad mood just because you couldn’t take a nap? You should be thanking me for waking you up!”
“Yeah, well, thanks.”
“You really don’t sound grateful at all…”
Shinohara sighed in exasperation.
She had a point, and my desire to go back to sleep was starting to fade. So, I decided to give a proper thanks this time.
“Okay, seriously, thanks.”
“That’s the same as before!!” she pouted, protesting.
Even though my mind knew I should be thanking her, my instincts just wouldn’t cooperate.
“Haa, whatever. Just hurry up and get dressed. I’ll read some manga while I wait.”
With that, Shinohara sat down on the bed, stretching out her body.
It was the same spot I had been lying in just moments ago.
Since she started coming to my place, she had completely fallen in love with the charm of shonen manga.
“Yeah, yeah.”
It wasn’t like she had anything specific to do here anyway.
I grabbed some clothes from the closet and dragged myself to the bathroom to change. After washing my face and fixing my hair with some wax, I threw on a jacket, and finally, I felt like I could face the outside world.
It’s funny how lounging around in loungewear makes you never want to leave the house, but changing into proper clothes somehow switches your mindset.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
When I called out upon returning to the room, Shinohara perked up.
“Wow, senpai! You’ve got some pretty good fashion sense. Looking sharp!”
It’s hard to go wrong with a jacket and skinny jeans set, but it still felt nice to be complimented.
Ever since Ayaka criticized my casual clothes at the Valentine’s party, I’d been making a point to dress a little sharper when going out. Though I doubt it’ll last long.
Shinohara, on the other hand, was wearing a black knit sweater and a red skirt.
A small bag was placed beside the bed, showing she was still on top of the current trends among university girls.
Of course, she looked especially radiant, which matched her excellent appearance.
“I haven’t worn a black knit in a while. Does it suit me?” she asked.
When I think of black knits, Ayaka usually comes to mind, but when Shinohara wears it, she gives off a completely different vibe. Maybe it’s the contrast with her usual cute outfits.
People say women are weak to contrasts, but the same goes for men too.
“It suits you, it really does.”
“Haha, you’re making me blush!”
“You’re not blushing.”
I brushed off her comment lightly and peeked into the fridge. I needed to eat something before heading to campus.
“I’m gonna grab breakfast, so you can just keep reading.”
“Oh, you haven’t had breakfast yet, senpai? Should I whip something up real quick?”
“I appreciate the offer, but we should head out soon. We need to get to university.”
“If you know that, then why didn’t you wake up earlier?” she teased.
I wanted to say, Tell that to the me who stayed up too late last night, but since it was my fault for oversleeping, I kept quiet.
“Uh-oh.”
“What’s wrong?”
“There’s nothing in the fridge… Let’s just go.”
“Senpai, if I didn’t come by, you’d never restock groceries, huh?”
“That’s why I always appreciate you.”
With that, I grabbed my bag.
“Let’s go.”
“I almost missed it because you said it so casually, but that actually made me really happy,” Shinohara said with a shy smile as she got up from the bed.
Even I was surprised at how naturally those words of gratitude slipped out, but I guess I really did appreciate her, enough to thank her without thinking. I wasn’t lying about that.
Shinohara didn’t seem to feel awkward about doing housework at my place, but I’m sure this dynamic would look odd to others. Still, I liked spending time with her.
Shinohara once told me that it didn’t matter what other people thought, as long as we were happy. I agreed.
As we stepped outside, cherry blossom petals fluttered through the air.
“The wind is so strong!”
––This isn’t such a bad life.
Watching Shinohara happily sweep her hair out of her face, I felt the arrival of spring.
