Every day was filled with joy as I took care of Kenichi-kun. My heart was content, and life felt complete.

But one day, in Kenichi-kun’s room, he suddenly told me something unexpected.

“Sumie-chan, I’m dropping out of school and moving to a remote island far away. From now on, I want to live without interacting with anyone.”

“Huh? What do you mean, Onii-san? With your condition… I thought for sure we would finally live together… I wanted to help you for the rest of my life…”

Kenichi-kun simply patted my head with his left hand and gave me a soft smile.

“Sumie-chan… thank you. Ever since I got out of the hospital, you’ve been helping me every day, and I’m really grateful for that.”

“T-That’s because I wanted to…”

“But, it’s okay now. You’ve got your future to think about, like exams next year. You’re going to university, right? You shouldn’t be spending your time on someone like me.”

“I-I don’t care! Even if it means not going to university!”

“That’s not what I want for you. I wouldn’t be happy if you made that choice. You have your own path to follow.”

Shortly after that, Kenichi-kun really did move to a remote island in Okinawa.

My dad left his old company and took over the business Kenichi-kun entrusted to him, now working every day as its president. Meanwhile, my mom is managing the publication of Kenichi-kun’s past works, handling all the legal rights and agreements.

According to my dad, the Komada family has fallen apart, with both Uncle and Aunt disappearing and no one knowing their whereabouts. 

Only Kotone was taken under Kenichi-kun’s protection and now lives in one of the company-owned apartments. 

Kenichi-kun entrusted my dad with covering her living expenses, food, and tuition, but Kotone refused most of the help, accepting only support for rent and tuition. 

She works multiple part-time jobs to cover her living costs, spending the rest of her time studying.

As a result, Kotone became isolated at school. She’s now called names like “bookworm,” “gloomy,” and “loner” behind her back. I cut ties with her, so I don’t know how she really feels, but it seems like she’s too focused on her studies to dwell on her situation.

Before I knew it, I graduated too. I got accepted into my desired university and will start as a college student in the spring.

Incidentally, Kotone was accepted into the law department at K University through a special program. 

She apparently told my dad that once she graduates, she plans to move out of the apartment and repay all the rent and tuition fees she received.

“Well, she can do whatever she wants,” my dad said.

And now, I’m on my graduation trip.

“Hey, Onii-san, can I live here after I graduate from university?”

I had come to visit Kenichi-kun’s home to celebrate my graduation.

“Sumie-chan, didn’t you say you were going on a trip with your friends?”

“Well, they invited me, but I turned them down and came here instead!!”

“I’m not exactly mobile these days, so I couldn’t meet you at the dock. Wasn’t it tough getting here on your own?”

“Not at all! I enjoyed the scenery, and most of all, I just wanted to see you, Onii-san!”

“…Before we go to the house, why don’t we visit my mom?”

As Kenichi-kun tried to stand up from the beach chair using his cane, I hurried over to support him by holding his elbow.

His white hair shimmered in the sunlight, reflecting beautifully.

We made our way to the Fudo family grave next to Kenichi-kun’s house, placing the flowers I had picked along the way on the grave. Together, we clasped our hands in prayer.

“Auntie, it’s been a while. I’ve come to visit Kenichi-kun and will be staying for a while.”

That day, we went shopping in a small town on the other side of the island.

“This electric tricycle is so convenient!”

We rode on the custom-made electric tricycle that was built for Onii-san, cruising along the slightly chilly March coastline.

“It’s a small island, but it takes about 20 minutes to ride around the coast.”

“Waaa~~ the breeze feels so good!”

We bought groceries at the island’s only supermarket and headed back to Kenichi-kun’s house. As I prepped for dinner, the sun set, and the only light was from the house.

“I’m in awe! I’ve never seen such a sky full of stars before!!!”

I was mesmerized by the starry sky as I carried food outside to prepare for a barbecue.

“Sumie-chan, the fire will be ready soon.”

“Okay~♪”

We sat under the stars, enjoying the barbecue, chatting as we relaxed in our chairs.

“Onii-san… I graduated, and next year, I’ll be starting university, you know?”

“Yeah, I know. Congrats on getting in! A women’s university, right? I heard it’s pretty tough to get into, but you did great.”

We woke up in bed, exchanging a soft morning kiss. After that night, we had moved around and spent the entire night making love.

As the morning came, we got dressed. While I did the laundry, Kenichi-kun got ready, and we decided to go for a walk together to the supermarket in the town we visited the day before.

Supporting Kenichi-kun, we walked along the slightly steep mountain trail, making our way toward the town.

We bought breakfast in town, checked out a few other shops, and then made our way back home along the mountain path.

I quickly prepared breakfast, and we sat together at the table to eat.

“Hey, Kenichi-kun… I want you… I need you…”

After satisfying my hunger, now it was my desire stirring. The sweet and sinful life I had always dreamed of with Kenichi-kun was now real, and my heart and body trembled with fulfillment.

But even these happy days had to come to an end as the day I had to leave approached…

“Kenichi-kun… can I come visit again?”

“…Yeah…”

As we parted, we shared a deep kiss before I boarded the boat back to the mainland. I ran up to the deck where I could still see Kenichi-kun.

“I’ll come back soon!!!” I waved as hard as I could.

I watched as Kenichi-kun, leaning on his cane and smiling softly, grew smaller and smaller.

My chest tightened… It hurt so much!!

“I can’t bear it… being away from Kenichi-kun for so long…”

Even though I couldn’t see him anymore, I kept staring at the spot where he had stood.
