Chapter 46: Rock Golem

A massive hand made of earth, roughly twice my height, emerged from the ground.

“Wha-What the heck is that?!”

The earthen hand pulled back slightly as if preparing to strike and…

“Whoa-!”

The hand came crashing down toward me with immense force. I managed to evade it by jumping backward just in time.

[It’s huge.]

[Is that the main body?]

[It looks like the Master Hand from Super Mario.]

[I bet it could shoot beams from its fingers.]

The earthen hand rose again and grabbed some of the burning grass nearby. It leaned back slightly—

“Whoa?!”

—and hurled the burning grass straight at me. Had I taken that attack head-on, the flames would definitely spread to my clothes or hair…

Wait, maybe I can use this to my advantage.

I carefully aimed and fired a 〈Shock Blast〉. The 〈Shock Blast〉 carried the burning grass with it as it flew straight toward the earthen hand. The fire-clad 〈Shock Blast〉 struck the hand, sending a cloud of dust into the air.

But the annoying part about them was their ability to nullify all physical and skill-based attacks. The only way to defeat them was to destroy the red gemstone on their backs.

Typically, one person would distract the golem while another attacked from behind. Unfortunately, I was all alone here.

The three Rock Golems finally got close enough to raise their massive fists toward me.

…Maybe I can get behind them right now? They’re incredibly slow, after all.

I muttered the incantation, and my body began glowing faintly in red. Until now, I’d tried using the monster’s attack openings to get behind them, but their turning speed was always faster than mine. But now… I had magic with me! With my enhanced physical abilities, I slipped behind one of the Rock Golems—

Before it could react, my fist had already hit the gemstone, shattering it to pieces.

The second Rock Golem didn’t learn its lesson and prepared to attack again, so I planted my feet on the ground and launched myself—

I heard a faint creaking sound from my arms. Based on its raw power alone, the Rock Golem’s attack power was comparable to an A-rank monster. There was no way my paper-thin defenses could take that kind of hit. But… Why couldn’t my legs move just now? I looked down at my feet and—

“What…?”

My legs were halfway buried in the ground. So it wasn’t that my legs couldn’t move as I wanted. The ground had turned into a swamp, making it impossible for me to get any traction to launch myself into the air.

Damn it.

I was wondering why the earthen hand had been awfully quiet since the Rock Golem appeared… So this was what it was planning! I frantically racked my brain for a solution. I couldn’t move, which meant I couldn’t dodge the Rock Golem’s attacks. If I took another hit just like that one before, I would be dead.

“But what the hell am I supposed to do?!”

I tried to pull my feet out, but the harder I struggled, the deeper they sank. If I took too long, the Rock Golem’s fist would come crashing down on me already.

“Grarrrgh!”

The two Rock Golems closed in, their massive fists ready to strike.

“〈Shock Blast〉! 〈Shock Blast〉!”

Desperate, I fired two Shock Blasts to deflect their attacks.

That was close!

Because of the swampy ground, my footing was unstable, and I almost missed my mark. After creating some distance from the Rock Golems, I tried a different approach.

“〈Shock Blast〉.”

I aimed at the swampy ground itself, hoping to disperse it with 〈Shock Blast〉, but all it did was scatter the mud on the surface, accomplishing nothing significant.

This is bad. I can’t come up with any better solutions. If I can’t move, I can’t get behind the Rock Golems. If I can’t get behind them, I can’t destroy the gemstone.

…Am I trapped in a complete checkmate?
