Chapter 24: Speedrun to the Lower Levels

[Kids these days might not know, but the deep level of the Okutama Dungeon are known as “Depths of No Return” where 3 Japanese S-rank explorers died, you know?!]

[Three?! For real?!]

[This is not a laughing matter.]

[This is what happens when you get too cocky.]

I wasn’t even looking at the comments, but I could feel I was being torn apart verbally by the viewers. Even though 3 S-rank explorers had died in this place, I had no intention of dying. Not here, at least. Sure, it was practically impossible for someone like me to get out of here in one piece. After all, I wasn’t an S-rank, far from it even. That being said, giving up and accepting my demise quietly wasn’t an option for me. 

So what if there’s a thick fog? I’ll blow it away with 〈Shock Blast〉!

“〈Shock Blast〉!”

The fog cleared up for a brief moment. I could see about 20 meters ahead now. I scanned the area, but still, this place looked more like a forest than a jungle. 

“What should I do fro—ugh!”

Suddenly, a sharp, throbbing pain pierced my chest. Not just that, breathing became strangely difficult. By the time I realized it, I had already collapsed to my knees on the ground. 

What the hell is going on here?! I didn’t sense any monster around and even if I were attacked by something, I didn’t hear any sound either!

[What’s going on?!]

[What happened to him all of a sudden like that?!]

[Did he get shot?]

[This is bad. Shouldn’t someone call for help?!]

[Don’t be stupid. Who in Japan could even reach the deep level of the Okutama Jungle DUngeon to rescue him in the first place?!]

Just as I resigned my fate for death, it happened. The fog returned, enveloping me in the same thick mist I had blasted away moments ago and…

“Huh? What’s…?”

At the same time, I could breathe much easier. The pain in my chest vanished without a trace, as if it didn’t even exist in the first place. I stood up cautiously. 

Don’t tell me…

“…I can’t survive without this mist?”

When I blasted the mist earlier, my lungs hurt like hell, like I was inhaling some toxic gas. Maybe this mist was in charge of purifying some kind of harmful substance in the air?

[What’s going on?]

[So he almost died because he blew the mist away?]

[Does that mean he has to keep moving in the mist now?]

[Is this the livestream of Hiiragi’s death?]

[↑ Dark. Way too dark. LOL]

It seemed someone among the viewers had spread the news about my slip up into the deep level of the Okutama Dungeon because the live viewers count had skyrocketed to 80,000 viewers. 

What’s with that? The livestream of Hiiragi’s death?! Don’t just kill me off out of nowhere like that!

I thought to myself when I noticed a familiar name popping up in the comment section.

[Ruri Hiiro: Hiiragi-san, are you okay?]

[Mashiro Shirono: Are you really in the deep level?]

It was Ruri Hiiro and Mashiro Shirono.

No, but, Shirono-san acts a bit different when she’s commenting, huh?

I explained the situation to the two of them since they seemed to be worried about me. 

“I’m not 100% sure if I’m in the deep level or not, but based on the information from the incident that occurred 10 years ago, it’s safe to assume I’ve fallen to the deep level.”

[Ruri Hiiro: We need to send a rescue team to help!]

“I’d appreciate that. I really do, but the deep level of the Okutama Dungeon is the same place where a party of S-rank explorers had died 10 years ago. I doubt anyone would be willing to come rescue me and even if someone were crazy enough to volunteer, the fog is so thick. I can’t even tell where I am right now.”

If a superhero actually existed, I’d want them to save me. However, reality wasn’t that sweet. Convenient existence like a superhero didn’t exist. In the end, I had to deal with my problem on my own. 

[That’s true.]

[It’s impossible to survive the deep level of the Okutama Dungeon unless it’s a party full of the strongest S-rank explorers.]

[By the way… Why is no one pointing out the fact that Hiiragi is being all polite and formal when talking to Ruri Ruri? Like, come on…]

[That too.]

[Now that you mention it, he was super polite when he explained everything to them. LOL]

Crap… I accidentally started using polite speech like I would off-stream.

“Anyway, I need to figure out a way to escape from this place on my own.”

I was standing right next to a cliff, which I assumed to be the edge of the dungeon floor. Though this method was a bit risky to use since I didn’t know anything about this place, but I could use 〈Shock Blast〉 to scale the cliff if I had to.

And so,  I decided to walk along the edge of the cliff. By staying near the cliff, I could climb it if I were to get ambushed by monsters. Though… I didn’t want to do that if I could since I didn’t know what might be awaiting me at the top of the cliff. 

I was wandering near the cliff for several minutes when something caught my eye.

“Is that…?”

Squinting, I moved closer to something that looked familiar to me. There was no mistaking it. It was…

“A peach! A peach!”

It was a perfectly ripe peach.

Thank goodness. 

This was supposed to be a speedrun session. I didn’t plan to stay in the dungeon for long, so I didn’t have enough resources. Fortunately, I was able to secure food relatively quickly. It looked like there were other peach trees nearby too. At least, I could take a break for the time being.

Jumping a bit, I plucked a peach from a branch and took a bite.

“So delicious!”

The peach tasted incredibly sweet and not just that, I felt a strange surge of energy welling up inside me after I ate it. This might be a jackpot. The jackpot of discoveries. 

I was about to take a bite out of another peach when…

“Thief!!”

Along with that shout, something hit me hard on the head.
