Chapter 17: Clan

“Ummm… A clan, you say?”

For explorers, a clan was basically like a team where they could share information, recruit party members and trade items. Since my fighting style didn’t bode well in parties, I usually turned down any party invitations I had received. However, a clan was different from a party. Hence why I was hesitating. 

“Yes. It’s a clan called ‘Haisu’. Well, it’s not actually my clan. The clan was founded by my friend’s father.”

I never heard of that clan before. It didn’t seem to be one of those famous clans that most A-rank or S-rank explorers went to. 

“Indeed, just as you might have guessed, it’s not a popular clan among regular explorers. But, there’s something a bit special about this clan. Most of the members are dungeon streamers.”

“Oh…?”

“Because of that, it’s easy to collaborate with other streamers. You can also learn all kinds of tips related to streaming from the other streamers.”

I see… That certainly sounded intriguing to me. However… That offer didn’t sound intriguing enough to make me seriously consider joining. Besides, I wasn’t even sure if someone like me could join a clan in the first place. After all, I hadn’t officially registered as an explorer yet. I should turn down her invitation politely and ask for a lap pillow instead. 

“Also… If you join a clan, you will be able to take items and magic stones from dungeons as part of the clan’s assets.”

“-?!”

Just as I was about to open my mouth to refuse, she said so. The timing was so perfect, it almost felt intentional even. A jolt ran through my entire body. Maybe… Just maybe… I would be able to bring home those hundreds… Or maybe thousands of magic stones and rare items that I had to blow away with my skill before. Based on my circumstances, there was nothing more appealing than that. Could it be, this girl…

“Fufu~ Actually, when I tried to contact you to thank you, I realized I didn’t have your contact information. So, I asked the Dungeon Association to send a message to you on my behalf, but they said that you weren’t registered as an explorer.”

“…I see. Hiiro-san, so that’s the reason why you suggested that I should join your clan, huh?”

“Yes. While I was looking into you, I saw a clip of you blowing away magic stones and dropped items… This got me thinking. Maybe… Maybe the reason why you had to give up on the drops was because you’re not registered as an explorer yet.”

She could deduct that much just from that little piece of information? This girl… Maybe she was a genius?

“But can you join a clan without being registered as an explorer?”

“Yes. You can join a clan as long as you have other means to identify you. Clans and Explorer Association are two separate entities. If I may be honest, explorer ID is more of a relic from the past. Nowadays, people have explorer ID mostly just for formality.”

Wait, really? Yeah, I always thought it was strange that you could enter a dungeon without an explorer ID but you needed one to take the items out. 

“But in that case… The items I got would technically belong to the clan, right?”

I asked her one more question that bugged me. 

“Temporarily, yes. However, the clan can distribute them to you afterward and it would be legally considered your share. In this way, you can take the items out of the dungeon without an explorer ID.”

I remembered now. This system was originally designed to divide rewards among large groups of explorers. Discussing how the loot should be split inside a dungeon would leave you vulnerable. This system was implemented to avoid that.

But then, the girl suddenly looked a bit uncomfortable. 

“However… There’s one issue behind this system.”

“What is it?”

“This system was originally designed for a large group of explorers, so it can’t be used when you dive into a dungeon solo.”

“Ugh…”

In other words, I had to team up with another explorer. My combat style relied on using 〈Shock Blast〉to move at a high speed and inflict burst damage. I couldn’t say for sure if my future teammates would be able to keep up with me…

“That being said, you don’t need to bring a lot of people with you. You only need one other person. You can just bring along a porter to carry your stuff and your problem will be solved.”

“I see…! So I can do it like that..!”

A porter wouldn’t be involved in combat, so I wouldn’t need to change my solo combat style to fit other people. On top of that, I could carry more items and magic stones with a porter with me. 

“How does that sound? If you join our clan, we can arrange for a porter to accompany you during your dungeon diving session.”

“I’m really grateful for the generous offer, but… What’s the benefit your clan will gain from having me?”

Considering how much I would gain from this deal, I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a hidden catch. I must’ve looked really suspicious since Hiiro-san smiled wryly at me instead. 

“I told you, didn’t I? This is my way of thanking you. Besides, having the most trending explorer like Hiiragi-san joining our clan will be good for us too.”

She said. Her voice sounded serious yet somehow gentle. Her voice made me feel like… It might not be so bad even if I were to get scammed by her. 

“So, what do you think? Will you join our clan?”

She asked while extending her hand to me. By the time I realized it, I had taken her hand in mine.
