Chapter 6: Visiting Ruriko’s House
I visited Ruriko’s house.
It was enough of a plan to stir my heart.
In the afternoon class, my mind was completely preoccupied with lunch, so I couldn’t focus at all. It was the height of laziness.
I desperately tried to recall what Ruriko’s house was like.
It was a luxurious building. A sturdy gate, glossy high-end cars, and a fountain inside the house. The house reminded me of a foreign castle.
I couldn’t remember the detailed structure. There were very few descriptions with depth. If I saw the real thing, I would probably be amazed.
The boring and long class only ended up weaving together such pointless thoughts.
I decided to meet in a less crowded place to avoid drawing attention.
“Hey, Shimizu Issei-kun?”
“Huh!?”
After homeroom, I was trying to quietly leave, having erased my presence.
When I was about to go down the stairs in the hallway, someone called me out.
“Asai Yu, huh.”
“Calling me by my full name is kind of formal. Just call me Yu, like a guy friend, okay?”
“Alright, Yu. What do you want?”
“You’re cold. Are you still holding onto what happened at lunch?”
That was half correct.
I felt a bit irritated by Yu’s bluntness, even though I wasn’t really angry.
“Just a little. If you keep being rude, I might get mad.”
“Sorry, sorry. I’ll be careful. But I really need to know why you’re in such a hurry. Can we talk up on the roof?”
I climbed the stairs that led to the rooftop. Not many people came up here, so we could talk without worrying about anyone overhearing.
“Alright, tell me the reason.”
I was probably making a displeased face.
If I told her, it might turn into a troublesome topic. Giving Yu any kind of material would be like feeding her.
“Hmm, sounds like a secret.”
“Everyone has things they need to do.”
“Let me guess, a date with the latecomer duo?”
“N-No, it’s not a date!”
“But it’s something with Ruriko, right?”
“Well, that’s…”
“Looks like I hit the nail on the head.”
I ended up saying it. I had the naive thought that if I didn’t mention going to her house, it would be fine.
“Wow, Ruriko is something else… Well, enjoy yourselves. It’s a bit annoying, though.”
“Don’t think you’re holding something over me.”
“It’s fine. I won’t use it as blackmail. But I can’t deny that I’ve gotten some useful information.”
I started to regret saying anything, though.
“Well, I’m going. You should also do your best in basketball.”
“Yeah, sure… basketball, I’ll do my best.”
It was a half-hearted reply.
Asai Yu was supposed to be a regular member of the basketball team, but I wondered if I had misunderstood.
“Go ahead, I’ll leave at a later time.”
“Thanks for the consideration.”
I left when no other students were around, changing my shoes at the shoe locker and heading to the designated place.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“I wasn’t waiting at all.”
Ruriko was waiting for me, though.
“Didn’t you just meet someone earlier?”
“Well, it wouldn’t be a lie to say I did.”
“I thought it was Yu. What did you talk about?”
“Eh?”
Before I could ask how she knew, she explained.
“I could faintly smell the sweet and sweaty mix that comes from Yu after his morning basketball practice. So, I figured it was him.”
Ruriko revealed her deduction.
“You’re really observant. Like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes.”
“This much is normal. So, what did you talk about with Yu?”
“He just asked about my plans. I gave him a vague answer.”
“I see.”
When she asked what we talked about, she seemed a bit angry.
“Did talking to Yu bother you?”
“No, it’s not that. It’s just…”
“Just what?”
“Yu is Yu.”
“I see.”
I felt like I had glimpsed the signs of a yandere.
Her judgment of the smell, her probing into my conversation with Yu…
It seemed almost certain now that she was a yandere.
Still!
As long as there’s a chance, I want to believe in her.
“Let’s go then.”
We walked through back alleys. When there were no people around, Ruriko would get close to me.
“Is the distance too close…? Or is it just me?”
“It’s nothing. We held hands and ran together this morning.”
“Considering that, it’s not weird, right…?”
I found myself doubting the situation.
I just went along with Ruriko’s words and accepted it.
“No matter what others think, my life is mine and Issei-kun’s life. It’s a waste to live by someone else’s standards, don’t you think?”
Saying that, she took my hand.
Ruriko’s neighborhood was famous for its high-end housing area, even in Yamijima.
“I feel kind of out of place.”
“You don’t need to be nervous. Whether it’s at my house or anywhere, you don’t need to be scared of how things look from the outside.”
Ruriko pressed a special card to the LCD screen embedded in the gate.
A beep sounded, and the gate opened automatically with a loud noise.
“Wow.”
“I knew you’d be surprised, Issei-kun.”
“Of course. It’s a mansion I’ve never seen before.”
“The inside of the house is even more full of surprises and fun, you know?”
She emphasized that she wanted me to see her special place.
She held up the card again. This time, it seemed to involve biometric authentication. Once the authentication was completed, the front door unlocked.
“You have two choices, Issei-kun.”
“Good choices and bad choices?”
“Both are good choices. A special one, or an even more special one.”
“I think I’ll leave the fun part for last.”
Ruriko sighed, saying it was a waste.
I was terrified of seeing what the special thing was. If it was anything like the traps set for game protagonists, I was done for.
Once again, I was being dragged into the bottomless pit of yandere behavior.
The special thing was…
