Chapter 23: Night View and a Date
We climbed the stairs leading to the hilltop.
The staircase was longer than I expected. Jokingly, I said, “This would be a perfect place to reenact the Glico pose,” and we continued heading upward.
“Almost there, huh?”
Just a few more steps, and the view started to open up before us.
“Wow…”
In front of us was a cityscape, and in the distance, the ocean stretched out.
It wasn’t the dazzling brightness of a big city, but it was beautiful in its own way.
To our good fortune, there wasn’t anyone else around—it felt like we had the place all to ourselves.
“What do you think?”
“It’s great. Really great. This island feels small, but at the same time, it’s so vast.”
“Yeah. It’s only when you see it with your own eyes that you realize it.”
The night breeze was pleasantly cool. If I listened closely, I could hear the faint sound of waves.
“And there’s something even more amazing above us.”
“Above?”
“The sky.”
Looking up, countless stars shone brightly, their clarity unimaginable in the city.
“I can’t believe you can see so many stars.”
“Unless you’re somewhere like Yami Island, this is rare. A special experience, for sure.”
“…Yeah.”
Satsuki fell silent, gazing up at the night sky. She must have been overwhelmed by the beauty.
The infinite expanse of stars stretched above us. What we were seeing now had taken millions of years to reach us. Those stars might no longer even exist.
Stars, like people, are beautiful because they’re alive. They shine because they burn with life.
At this moment, Satsuki was radiant. She had been given a new chance at life and had achieved what she longed for.
And yet…
It seemed like she wasn’t fully content. Was it hesitation? Fear? Something felt off.
“Can I move a little closer to you?”
“Of course.”
After a pause, Satsuki spoke.
She moved closer, wrapping her arms around my back as I did the same to her.
“Your body is warm, firm, and reassuring, Issei-kun.”
“Really?”
“To me, it is. It’s like finding a missing puzzle piece—a sense of overwhelming comfort.”
I realized once again that, on some deep level, Satsuki must love me completely.
“Do you want to stay like this for a while?”
“No, this won’t be enough.”
With that, Satsuki buried her face in my chest. Though it was just for a moment, her expression was one of satisfaction.
“Feeling you with all five senses… it’s pure bliss.”
“Don’t let it go to your head.”
“It’s fine. There are only a few more chances left for this.”
“Wow, planning ahead, huh?”
“I know my impulses better than anyone. You get it, don’t you?”
“That’s not something to brag about.”
Satsuki chuckled softly, as cheerful as ever.
After that, we leaned against the railing to feel the sea breeze up close and wandered around the area.
Our time there came to an end when a couple showed up. Not wanting to disturb them or feel awkward, we quickly left.
“You knew a great spot. Honestly, the view and time we spent here were amazing.”
“I’m glad you enjoyed it. I think this wraps up the day.”
“Yeah. I’d love to do more, but… I feel guilty about using someone else’s body. Besides, we have tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow, huh? After school, right?”
“Huh?” Satsuki looked stunned, then quickly followed up.
“No way, not tomorrow afternoon! We’re skipping school for a whole day together.”
“Skipping school, huh?”
“Exactly.”
“What about starting after school?”
“Nope. Please, just this once? A full day together—it’s my one and only request.”
Seeing her desperation, I couldn’t bring myself to reject her outright.
If one day would satisfy her and we could both agree on it, then so be it.
Besides, she must have her reasons if she’s this adamant. I decided to go along with it this time.
“Just one day. But after that, we’ll have to keep things low-key. Are you okay with that?”
“Of course. I only need tomorrow.”
“Understood.”
Skipping school tomorrow would complicate things, especially with Ruriko-san’s breakfast. She’d easily figure out something was up.
I decided it was best to inform her in advance, using a fake illness as an excuse and claiming I needed to visit the hospital in the morning. Although she offered to prepare breakfast, I insisted she didn’t need to.
Honestly, it felt like a flimsy lie.
Ruriko-san already suspected there was something going on between me and Satsuki—or rather, Kurokawa—ever since that cooking class incident.
If she let this slide, it was probably intentional. Whether it was a trap or a gesture of tolerance, it didn’t matter. As long as my story held up, it was a win for now.
We took a taxi home that night to prepare for the next day. Naturally, I went straight to bed after arriving.
The next morning.
“Good morning, Issei-kun!”
Satsuki greeted me cheerfully.
I headed to the Kurokawa residence early, avoiding Ruriko-san by leaving ahead of time.
“Morning. Satsuki, you picked a great outfit.”
Her choice was bold and revealing but undeniably cute.
“Seems like this body’s owner is eager to express herself.”
“Looks like it.”
Satsuki nodded lightly at my response.
Now, for the main event: today’s plan.
In conclusion, it was an over-the-top itinerary crammed with everything we could think of.
Window shopping, playing on the beach, snacking at food stalls, enjoying nature—it was like she was trying to fit in every possible activity.
“This might not be the best plan,” I pointed out.
Even so, Satsuki didn’t back down. While we scrapped her initial overly packed, minute-by-minute schedule, she refused to give up on visiting as many places as possible.
Surprisingly, everything moved along smoothly once we got started.
Thanks to my knowledge of the original story, we navigated easily to each destination without much trouble.
Shopping was relaxed but not aimless.
“Are you sure you don’t want to buy anything for yourself, Satsuki?”
For some reason, she didn’t seem interested in getting clothes or items for herself.
“Yeah. Kurokawa already owns a lot of stuff, and I just want to see you enjoy yourself, Issei-kun.”
“If you say so…”
Thus, I became a mannequin, trying on various outfits at a clothing store. Although it was a bit exhausting, it turned out to be fun.
Window shopping wrapped up quicker than expected.
Next, we headed to the beach. We didn’t swim but played in the sand instead.
Time passed in the blink of an eye.
