Chapter 22: Sharing Information and a Proposal for a Night Date
We had spent some time together at home.
The sun was technically still out, but it was already evening.
Perhaps tired of playing games, Satsuki lay on her back, eyes closed.
“Thinking about something?”
“Just resting.”
“You always look up when you’re lost in thought.”
“Just like I can tell all of your habits, you’ve got mine figured out too, huh?”
“Well, we’ve known each other for a long time.”
Satsuki muttered, “You’re still the same old Issei.”
“Can I ask you for something?”
“Ask me something?”
We’d been relaxing at home, just the two of us. What could she want now?
“I want to go on a date. What do you think?”
Satsuki said it like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“A date!? Seriously?”
“Yes, seriously.”
“Wait, wait. If Ruriko or Yuu find out, it won’t end well.”
“We’re not exactly in a position to brag, but weren’t we originally a cou—”
“That’s not what I mean!”
This world is the “Deadliest Yandere Academy.”
All the girls at the academy are yanderes.
From the top three beauties to everyone else, no exceptions.
You mustn’t give them any reason to snap. I’d rather not have my life put in danger.
Of course, even having brought Satsuki home like this was already one strike against me.
“If we move around recklessly, I can’t guarantee our safety. That’s the kind of world this is.”
“What do you mean? I understand we’ve been reincarnated into another world, but… Issei, do you know something?”
“It’s hard to explain, but since we’re here, I’ll tell you.”
This is Satsuki we’re talking about. We came from the same world in our past lives.
It’d be unfair to keep important information from her.
“Basically, this world… it’s from a school-themed game.”
“A school-themed game, like a gal game or an eroge?”
“Exactly. Not to mince words, yeah.”
Satsuki stared at me quietly.
“Pervert.”
“It’s not like that!”
“You were chasing after 2D girls even while we were together. I wonder what I would’ve done if I’d known back then.”
“I played it ages ago, okay? I was just a kid—elementary or middle school—because of a bad influence.”
“…Such a precocious little boy.”
Her words were cold and dismissive, dripping with disdain.
“Fine, I’ll take the insults. Anyway, let me explain the game.”
The game’s story unfolded on Yami Island, an isolated place, centered around a school love story.
Every heroine was a yandere, showcasing the creator’s strong preferences.
There were multiple routes, but the endings almost always involved a yandere snapping.
The endings typically veered into themes of losing one’s humanity, or something similarly dark. The only happy ending was the harem route.
As I explained the game, I found myself thinking about how often I had played it.
“I see. So you were groomed to love yanderes, huh?”
“Yeah, I guess I was influenced a bit.”
“Then from the perspective of Issei the Yandere Master, was I over the top?”
“You went way too far, you idiot. I don’t hold grudges anymore, though.”
The past couldn’t be changed. The only thing I could shape was the future.
“…Sorry if I ruined the mood a bit.”
“It’s fine. You’re not wrong, Issei.”
“If you understand, that’s good. Now, back to the topic of the date, right?”
“Yeah. I thought you might know some good date spots on the island.”
Date spots, huh?
There were plenty. The island was full of heroine events, meaning there were many beautiful locations.
“When do you want to go?”
“Today or tomorrow, for sure.”
“That’s pretty soon.”
“We finally got to meet again, so of course I want to go.”
Satsuki’s straightforwardness in expressing her emotions hadn’t changed.
“Alright. It’s early summer, and the forecast says it’ll be clear both today and tomorrow.”
“If possible, I’d like to go out.”
“Out, huh? It’s already dark tonight.”
“Then I’d be happy just seeing the night view.”
In that case…
“Let’s go to the hilltop.”
“There’s such a place?”
“It’s the highest point on the island. The stars are beautiful, and the moonlight reflecting off the ocean makes it magical.”
“That sounds perfect. If you recommend it, I’ll trust you.”
In the original game, the hilltop was sometimes the setting for heroines’ confessions.
The beauty of the view made the protagonist feel insignificant in comparison—or so it was described in his narration.
“Alright then, it’s decided. It’s a bit far. You okay with that?”
“Yeah. As long as I’m with you, I’ll manage any way I can.”
And so, we set off on foot.
The hill was in the opposite direction of the school. But since it was the highest point, the path was an uphill climb.
The slopes were steep, and this body seemed out of shape. It was exhausting.
“Are you holding up okay?”
“Hmm, this body feels heavy.”
“Kurokawa isn’t exactly the outdoor type.”
“Yeah, seems like it. It’s hard to get used to a body that isn’t mine.”
“Don’t push yourself too hard.”
“I won’t. I’ll take breaks as needed.”
In the original game, travel scenes were just visuals. But here, I had to move with my own legs. It was tough.
We sat on benches a few times along the way.
At one point, we found a vending machine and bought cold drinks.
“You went for soda, of course.”
“Yeah. The sharp fizz of clear water is the best. And you got cola.”
“Dark, beautiful, and sweet, just like a person’s heart. Delicious.”
“Satsuki, you’re still so weird.”
“I don’t want to hear that from a perverted brat.”
“Why is my reputation getting worse?!”
Satsuki seemed to enjoy teasing me, laughing all the while.
“Spending time like this makes me feel like I’m really with you, Issei. It makes me happy.”
“Well, I’m glad to hear that.”
For now, all I wanted was for Satsuki to be happy.
Partly because I didn’t want her snapping, but also because I had once fallen for her. Seeing her happy didn’t feel bad at all.
“My head feels clearer now. Let’s move on slowly, okay?”
“Uh, are you in a rush or taking it easy?”
“I’m excited but steady, I guess?”
“Got it. Makes sense.”
Along the way, most of our conversation was reminiscing.
This world wasn’t ours. We hadn’t been here long, and we weren’t deeply attached to it.
Our memories were mostly of our past lives—our teachers, classmates, events, and childhoods.
Just talking about them filled me with nostalgia.
The time spent reminiscing felt short, but in reality, it had been longer than I thought.
Soon, we reached the foot of the staircase leading to the hilltop.
“Just these stairs to go, huh?”
“…Let’s do it.”
Night had fallen.
Thinking of the breathtaking view waiting for us at the top, my heart raced.
