Chapter 19: The First Wife Returns
――It’s Satsuki.
Standing before me is Kurokawa Kana.
Yet my instincts tell me this is Satsuki.
It’s likely that Satsuki’s spirit has descended into Kana’s body. Whether it was originally lying dormant in Kana or just descended now, I can’t tell.
This issue ties to my own mental state, so I’ll save finding the answer for another time.
“Kana? You’re acting a little strange, like you’re possessed.”
“Strange? I’m just me. There’s nothing strange about it.”
“You seem different than usual… Maybe I’m just tired.”
Ruriko-san looked confused. Of course, she would. If someone else’s spirit is likely inhabiting Kana’s body, it’s only natural to feel something is off.
“Issei-kun, let’s just eat already. I made hamburg steak, after all.”
“Y-yeah, you’re right.”
Ignoring my awkward smile, Kana—or rather, “Satsuki”—smiled brightly.
While it’s not confirmed, there’s a high chance that Satsuki’s consciousness resides in Kana.
For now, I’ll call her “Satsuki.”
Once it’s fully confirmed, I’ll just call her Satsuki as usual.
The other two of the “Three Great Beauties” were also giving us suspicious looks.
“Let’s eat, Issei-kun.”
“Yeah, let’s.”
We all said our thanks before eating. Satsuki quickly held out her hamburg steak to me.
“Here.”
“Hm?”
“Can’t you tell by looking? Say ‘ahhh.’”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa.”
Ruriko and Yu were stunned by her sudden and bold action.
“Did I do something strange?”
“Of course it’s strange. We’re not the kind of couple who feeds each other in public like this.”
“Really? It used to be so normal.”
She’s playing dumb, fully aware of what she’s doing.
Honestly, this is a moment for us to feel each other out. I want to understand Satsuki’s current state better.
She, too, seems to be probing me. Maybe she’s pretending to be clueless while plotting to say something shocking?
“Come on, say ‘ahhh.’”
“No, tha—”
Before I could refuse, she shoved it in my mouth halfway by force.
At this point, spitting it out wasn’t an option, so I chewed and swallowed it.
“Wow, that’s good.”
The onions are just right, aren’t they?”
“Yeah, they are.”
Ruriko-san blinked in surprise.
“What? A sudden competition?”
“There’s nothing sudden about it. I was the first to start, Ruriko.”
“You said this was some kind of experiment, but is this part of it!?”
“Who knows? Maybe I’m just doing what I want to do.”
It’s clear that Satsuki’s rampage can’t be stopped now.
“I see. So, you’re not hesitating to take bold moves, huh? Guess I can’t afford to lose either.”
Yu cracked her knuckles, clearly getting into the zone.
The unexpected appearance of Satsuki as a disruptive element is bound to cause chaos for the other two.
“Everyone, there’s no need to get so upset.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s obvious that I’ll win.”
She’s brimming with confidence. Considering she was my girlfriend in a past life, we did share a lot of time together. Among the three, she probably knows me best.
“You’ve got guts. I, Ruriko Kazuki, am confident I understand Issei-kun better than anyone else. I’m sure of it.”
“Sure, huh? Really, truly sure?”
“Don’t act like you know everything.”
“Well, I do know everything.”
The tense atmosphere was suffocating.
“Okay, let’s leave it at that for now. Everyone else will just get more upset, and I don’t want our relationships to worsen.”
“You’re right, Issei-kun… We need to build peaceful relationships.”
“I couldn’t agree more.”
To be honest, I can’t read Satsuki’s intentions. She says she wants peace, but if she realizes it’s impossible, she might cross the line without hesitation.
I kept my growing unease buried deep within.
“It feels like she’s a completely different person. I just can’t wrap my head around it.”
“I’ve always been me. It’s just that how you see me has changed, Yu. I haven’t changed at all.”
“Even so, hmm…”
Ruriko-san and Yu were both still confused.
It felt like only Satsuki and I were having a conversation on a completely different level.
“Issei-kun, you’ll meet with me after school today, right?”
“Meet you? We haven’t even—”
“Oh, that’s right. We haven’t yet. Then how about we make it our first outing together?”
“Well, that’s…”
Before I could finish, Ruriko-san interrupted.
“An outing? Don’t you have plans with me today, Issei-kun?”
“Huh?”
I had no such memory. But seeing Ruriko-san desperately winking at me, it was clear she wanted me to play along.
Still, going against the will of Satsuki, the ticking time bomb, was a hard call. My curiosity about her true intentions was stronger.
“Uh… right. I do have plans with Ruriko today, so it can’t be helped.”
“That’s strange, Issei-kun.”
Yu smirked as she watched me hesitate.
“Issei-kun, didn’t we also make plans today? If you’re double-booked, you’re quite the player.”
“Damn, that angle…”
Ruriko-san gritted her teeth in frustration.
“Oh my, it seems both Yu and Ruriko are just making things up.”
“What!?”
“Wha—stop joking around.”
They both tried to protest, but it was obvious they were bluffing and averted their eyes in defeat.
“Well, since no one has actual plans, let’s decide with rock-paper-scissors. Fair and square.”
“Guess we have no choice.”
“Bring it on!”
For some reason, it was decided that we’d play rock-paper-scissors to see who would go out with me.
Yu lost on the first round.
It became a fierce one-on-one between Ruriko-san and Satsuki. Neither gave in for several rounds, but in the end…
The winner was Satsuki.
“Looks like we’re going out, just the two of us, Issei-kun♡.”
“A-ah.”
I could only manage a half-hearted response. While I was curious about Satsuki’s current state, I still couldn’t shake off the fear and mistrust I felt.
“I’m looking forward to after school.”
Satsuki’s beaming smile seemed strange to me.
Her body was still the reserved, mysterious Kurokawa Kana.
Yet the bright and cheerful smile on Satsuki’s face was unimaginable from her.
