Chapter 15: Kurokawa Wants to Study Love
What exactly happens during a health check-up for swimming?
It’s just a simple examination—an ECG and a few other things.
Looking at my health booklet, the major health screenings were already done at the start of the term. This one was just an additional check-up.
We were pulled out of class and moved to a large classroom. The boys and girls lined up separately.
There was a bit of a wait. During the downtime, I continued chatting with Tomokazu and Akira. Since there weren’t any girls around, we didn’t have to be so mindful of what we said.
Naturally, the conversation drifted toward the swimming lessons.
Then, we started thinking about other summer events.
One topic was the big island festival, the Yami Festival.
Tomokazu openly expressed his wish to make a bold move by the festival. His honesty was admirable.
“Summer magic is real. Tons of couples get together after the festival. Maybe I’ve got a chance too.”
“You can’t just hope for it; you’ve got to act.”
“Man, you’re on another level, Issei. I mean, you’ve got your pick of the top three beauties.”
“I can’t deny it.”
The situation I’m in right now isn’t the result of any effort on my part.
And yet, here I am, asking Tomokazu to put in the effort. What right do I have to say that?
“Hey, I just thought of something,” Akira quietly interjected.
“What’s up? Something cryptic?”
“There are three of us—me, Issei, and Tomokazu. Do you know what that means?”
“Whoa, is this some deep statement?”
“There are three top beauties. The numbers line up perfectly. None of us will be left out.”
“Akira, you’re such a guy! I love the ambition.”
For a moment, I thought, He’s got a point.
But this school, “The Most Dangerous Yandere School,” is a game focused on the protagonist. If we follow the usual script, no one will be left out.
To be honest, I’d prefer the girls’ attention to be evenly distributed among everyone.
Dealing with intense emotions from multiple people at once is no easy task.
As we were immersed in this dreamlike talk, it was finally our turn.
The examination itself was surprisingly quick. Once finished, we were free to leave.
While walking down the hallway, I noticed a girl standing alone in a stairwell.
She was staring blankly out the window. Even from behind, her graceful figure was captivating.
“She’s here.”
She turned to face me.
It was Kurokawa Kana.
“Kurokawa-san, why were you just standing there?”
“I was waiting for you, Issei-kun. Isn’t that reason enough?”
“I’m not sure,” I replied.
“I didn’t know the order, but I had this strong feeling you’d come.”
“A gut feeling?”
“It was like a spark of electricity ran through my head.”
“That’s… quite something.”
In any case, Kurokawa’s intuition was spot on.
“I want to talk. Can we go somewhere else?”
We left the stairwell and moved to an empty classroom nearby.
The window was open. The breeze blew through, softly ruffling Kurokawa’s silky hair.
“…So, you said you had something to talk about?”
“It’s about yesterday. You seemed close with Ruriko and Yu.”
“With those two, well… a lot happened.”
“I see,” Kurokawa said lightly.
“I felt left out, like I’d been abandoned.”
“I guess it makes sense to feel that way if two of the top three beauties are sneaking around.”
“Yes. Honestly, I don’t understand it at all. Why did they suddenly start approaching you, Shimizu Issei?”
When you think about it, her confusion is perfectly reasonable.
“To be blunt, I didn’t think you were on our level, Issei-kun.”
“Past tense?”
“The current you is different. In just a few days, something’s clicked into place, and something new has started moving.”
Kurokawa, typically mysterious and reserved, appeared to have sharp insight.
How much could she see through me? It seemed I couldn’t let my guard down around any of the top three beauties.
“Since yesterday, every time I see you, my head throbs. My body heats up. Once I see you, I want to see you again.”
“What exactly are you saying?”
“Analyzing it objectively, the symptoms resemble those of being in love. So, logically, I should confess.”
“That’s oddly rational!”
Kurokawa didn’t seem nervous at all. Rather, she looked bewildered by her own emotions.
“It’s strange. In just two days, I feel like I’ve completely changed. I can’t seem to rationally explain these feelings. But leaving them unresolved doesn’t seem to ease the frustration. So—”
Her pace quickened, and I couldn’t keep up. I had no choice but to cut her off.
“So, basically, you’re confessing to me experimentally?”
“Thanks for summarizing.”
“But the other two have already made their moves.”
“In that case, I won’t insist on being your girlfriend. Starting as friends is fine. As long as I can get to know Shimizu Issei, the person, I don’t mind the process.”
“Alright, I’ll think about it positively.”
Though she started off talking about “sparks of electricity” and gut feelings, she turned out to be a very logical person.
“I appreciate it. I hope to gain valuable insights through this.”
“Got it.”
“I’m scared. Accepting such a drastic change in myself is terrifying. I feel like these overwhelming emotions might swallow me whole.”
“You don’t have to worry. You’ve got me as your test subject. That’s progress.”
“…You’re right.”
With that, Kurokawa extended her hand.
“In honor of this research partnership and its future progress, may we shake hands?”
“Sure.”
Her hand was cool to the touch, but it had a nostalgic warmth, as if it embraced you.
“Ugh…”
After the handshake, Kurokawa held her head.
“You okay?”
“Yes, it’s nothing. I just got a little dizzy.”
“It’s not that you find me repulsive or anything, right?”
“After feeling a spark in my head, that’s not possible.”
“So now you trust your intuition?”
“Yes. Data is just data. Ultimately, intuition often proves to be correct.”
“Alright, let’s go. You’ve said what you wanted to say.”
She quickly left the empty classroom.
I didn’t get a headache or anything like that.
But for some reason, I couldn’t forget the sensation of her hand. It lingered in my mind…
