Chapter 14: Chatting With a Male Friend
“Uh, good morning, Yu.”
“You’re acting so formal. Aren’t we closer than that, hmm?”
Yu’s voice was calm, but it was clear he was suppressing his irritation. However, his frustration was practically leaking out. Being alone with him in this mood? I didn’t even want to imagine it.
“Calm down, would you? Your face is too close, and everyone’s staring.”
I whispered this, and Yu quickly backed off.
“Oh, you’re concerned about the others? Fine, I’ll let it go for now. I’m sure Ruriko got the message anyway.”
For a moment, his gaze flicked toward Ruriko. It was a blatant warning.
“You and the tardy buddy seem pretty close. I can’t help but envy you.”
“It’s not what it looks like—”
“I don’t care about the reason. What bothers me is how cozy you and Ruriko are getting.”
With that, Yu stepped back.
“I’m not giving up either,” he added, leaving those words behind.
The tension from the morning lingered, leaving me exhausted. Just as I was about to lay my head down on my desk again to shake off the fatigue—
“Isei! What’s going on here?!”
A classmate called out to me.
It was a guy with a buzz cut and sharp, narrow eyes—a distinctive look.
I instantly realized who it was: Tomokazu Yoda.
In the original story, he was supposed to be the protagonist’s friend.
He was friendly and supportive, even cheering on the protagonist’s romantic endeavors. Little did he know, those paths led straight to hell…
“Oh, Tomokazu. It’s a lot, really.”
“A lot?! Yesterday and today, you’ve been sticking close to Katsuki-san since morning, eating lunch with the school’s three most beautiful girls, and now even talking to Asai-sama?!”
So everything was out in the open. Apparently, people were paying more attention than I thought.
“You don’t have to overreact like that.”
“I’m just happy that spring has come for you too, man!”
“You sound envious.”
“Of course I am! Isei, what good deeds did you do in your past life to get close with the three most beautiful girls?!”
Tomokazu clenched his fists and grimaced with jealousy.
I didn’t do any good deeds in my past life. If anything, I carried the burden of being killed by a yandere.
Unfortunately, Yami Island isn’t paradise. It’s a “Hell Island” full of yanderes.
“Man, I just want to be loved. To be the one being chased.”
“You shouldn’t say that like it’s fun…”
“You sound oddly wise.”
“I hear ideals and reality don’t always match.”
“Don’t act all philosophical when you’re so lucky. You’ll get stabbed by fans of the three beauties if you’re not careful.”
The word “stabbed” made me flinch momentarily. The memory of being stabbed was still fresh, leaving a scar in my mind.
“Yeah, you’re right.”
In fact, the other guys in class were already murmuring among themselves.
What’s his deal? Is he paying them off? Or does he have some dirt on them?
The speculations were endless. It wouldn’t be long before rumors started growing their own tails. I was almost curious to see what kind of bad rep I’d get.
“Anyway, Isei, I’m on your side. If you’re ever in trouble, especially with the three beauties, just let me know.”
“You’re not secretly hoping to benefit from this, are you?”
“N-No way! We’re friends, right?”
“Your eyes are darting all over the place.”
Tomokazu’s honesty about his desires kept him from being off-putting. He might just be joking in his own way, but I felt like I could get along with him.
As our conversation picked up, another classmate approached.
A guy with a slightly blurred face—it was the protagonist.
“Sub, huh?”
“Just call me Akira.”
The protagonist, speaking softly. His full name must be Sub Akira?
His face wasn’t clear, and he didn’t have any striking features. For now, he appeared to be plain yet brimming with potential—like a blank slate.
“What’s this? Have you come to join the love talk?”
“I’m not really the romantic type, but I’ve been curious.”
I decided to cut straight to the point.
“Akira, by ‘curious,’ do you mean you’re starting to fall for someone?”
“I don’t know… Recently, my head’s been full of things. Memories I shouldn’t have, images of Katsuki-san, Asai-san, and some girl I don’t recognize swirling in my mind.”
Sub, the supposed original protagonist.
It seemed remnants of the original timeline’s memories lingered faintly within him. Fascinating.
“Is it love, Isei?”
“I can’t say for sure. But it probably means something.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Akira replied.
After that, the three of us chatted about trivial matters.
Summer was approaching, and Tomokazu was excitedly talking about swimming lessons.
If I remembered correctly, there would be opportunities to swim in the ocean.
In the original story, there was some kind of trouble at the beach. But which route was that again…?
Safety first. Hopefully, the swimming lessons end without incident.
Today, we were supposed to have a health checkup in preparation for swimming, so I checked to make sure I had my student ID.
That’s when I caught a glimpse of Akira’s student ID.
It was written as Sabu Akira.
Summer was on its way.
The scorching sunlight would beat down. Running across the burning sand, diving into the vast ocean.
Just imagining it made my heart race. I couldn’t help but think of how Ruriko and Yu would look.
“Isei, you were definitely thinking something dirty just now.”
“Nope. It’s just natural for thoughts to wander sometimes.”
“So you’re admitting it!”
“Ah.”
With Tomokazu, it didn’t seem so bad to let some impure thoughts slip.
Nearby, Akira was chuckling softly.
A new world. This wasn’t just a place with only girls. With male friends around, my mind might find some peace.
Swimming lessons would start soon. I had to stay cautious about the events at the beach.
After all, my life—and others’ lives—depended on it.
