Chapter 13: Ruriko Asserts Herself as the First Wife
“Alright, here’s your meal, Issei.”
As soon as I got home, Ruriko-san prepared breakfast for me.
She went about cooking without hesitation. It felt like she knew the layout of the house better than I did. For someone like me, on just the second day after reincarnating, this place might as well be a brand-new home.
Hearing my stomach growl in front of the finished stir-fried vegetables and scrambled eggs caught me off guard.
“Oh? You were looking forward to this that much?”
“It’s just a natural reaction.”
“Don’t you think it looks tasty?”
“Yeah, it seriously looks delicious.”
“Fufun.”
Ruriko-san clearly wanted me to say it was delicious. How playful of her.
When she isn’t showing her yandere side, Ruriko-san is the best. That’s why I’m completely disarmed right now. My heart is racing. I’m such a simple person.
Wearing her own apron while cooking, she gave off a perfect girlfriend vibe. She exuded the confidence of a rightful wife. It makes you doubt if she’s really just one of the”Three Great Beauties.”
“Well then, enjoy your meal, Issei-san.”
“Why does this feel so newlywed-like? It’s unsettling.”
“Eh? This is just practice since we’re destined to be together.”
“Stop deciding the plot on your own.”
Yep, she’s definitely a yandere.
I started with a bite of the scrambled eggs after saying, “Let’s eat.”
“…!?”
The moment it touched my mouth, I was at a loss for words.
It was unbelievably delicious. The heat was perfect, and the texture was divine. Closing my eyes, I could almost imagine myself enjoying breakfast at a luxury hotel.
“Delicious, right?”
“These are the best eggs I’ve ever eaten.”
“Fufufu. This is the result of years of effort. You’ll never want any other scrambled eggs again.”
“Agreed.”
Now that I think about it, her words sounded like she was implying I’d never want another woman again. But whatever, that doesn’t matter.
Next was the stir-fried vegetables.
These, too, had just the right amount of salt and were cooked to perfection.
It was so good I didn’t even have the capacity to speak. I gave a trembling thumbs-up, pouring my appreciation into that gesture.
“How can you cook this well?”
“I wonder… maybe because I pursue the art of gourmet cooking?”
Ruriko Kazuki, being from a wealthy family, always had access to delicious food. Naturally, when she cooked for herself, she sought the same level of quality, leading her to become highly skilled in the kitchen—or so goes the backstory.
There was no lie in her words. Her cooking was worth every bit of my reaction.
“Oh, by the way, you haven’t had your coffee yet, have you?”
“I forgot about that.”
“I’ll prepare it now.”
At this point, I no longer had the energy to comment on her newlywed-like demeanor. Whether I said anything or not, Ruriko-san would continue as she pleased.
She boiled water, opened a packet of drip coffee, and set it in the cup.
With practiced movements, she poured the water, and two cups of coffee were ready.
“Here you go.”
Lightly swirling the steaming cup, I took a sip.
…What an elegant morning this is.
Ruriko-san chatted about yesterday’s events, occasionally joking, and then brought up recent topics.
Her cheerful demeanor was contagious, and I found myself feeling a pleasant sense of exhilaration just by being in her presence.
As we left for school, the inexplicable”newlywed” mood lingered.
When I instinctively took her outstretched hand, I wondered if my brain was malfunctioning. It just felt so natural.
Realizing this, I quickly let go of her hand to regain my composure.
Avoiding a yandere is my mission—complete avoidance!
A second death is out of the question, so I can’t carelessly close the distance between us.
The stern voice of my inner coach scolded me, reminding me not to repeat past mistakes.
However, having already agreed to the”breakfast contract, ” I couldn’t suggest walking to school separately at this point.
Ruriko-san kept trying to hold my hand whenever no one was around.
I deftly avoided her attempts each time. With every dodge, she’d make a frustrated”Mugugu” sound, visibly annoyed.
Her resistance was evident when we reached the classroom. She stubbornly insisted on entering at the same time as me.
“Isn’t this a bit too blatant?”
“It’s just like yesterday. Nobody’s paying attention.”
“Ruriko-san, even if you downplay it, you’re one of the ‘Three Great Beauties.’ People notice you.”
“I’m used to attention. The one who’ll be troubled is you, Issei-kun.”
With a smug smile, Ruriko-san left me without a comeback.
The attention we were getting was a consequence of me accepting her presence and walking to school together. It was my own doing.
When we entered, what worried me most was Yu.
Seeing Ruriko-san’s obvious moves, would Yu, the jealous type, remain calm?
The answer was no.
Absolutely not.
Ruriko-san was likely aware of this. Her calculated actions were designed to provoke Yu’s jealousy and assert her dominance. After all, the”Three Great Beauties” probably knew each other inside out.
“…I can’t see the bottom of your scheming.”
“Hm? Did you say something?”
Stopping at the staircase landing, Ruriko-san turned to look back at me, tilting her head.
“No, it’s nothing. I just thought, ‘I can’t win against you.'”
“Oh, I see, I see. So, you’ll come in with me then?”
“I can endure it—barely.”
If I said no, she’d likely resort to threats again. Her initial revelation of the confinement room still impressed me.
When we reached the floor with the classroom, Ruriko-san slowed her pace.
“Here we are.”
“Yeah, guess there’s no turning back.”
The only way left was forward.
Opening the door, Ruriko-san greeted the room with a loud, “Good morning!”
Before I fully stepped inside, she secretly grabbed my hand.
“—Don’t you feel a hint of guilt?”
That’s probably what Ruriko-san wanted to say, but I was too anxious about being caught.
Even if it was brief, holding hands felt like an eternity.
Once freed, I was met with the buzzing of the classroom.
And an intense gaze from a certain girl. I tried to look away, but her eyes followed me.
Of course, it was Yu. Asai Yu.
Her cheek twitched with tension. Anticipating the events to come, I trembled inwardly.
Ignoring the various stares and whispers from my classmates, I sat at my desk.
Closing my eyes, I shut out the world. I needed to empty my mind.
When I slowly opened my eyes to face reality—
A face was right in front of mine. A girl’s face.
“You look happy, Issei-kun.”
It was Yu, her tone cold and expressionless.
