- Chapter 12 - Ruriko Wants to Win His Stomach Over Breakfast
Chapter 12: Ruriko Wants to Win His Stomach Over Breakfast
The first day of my reincarnated life ended on a dense, intense note. I couldn’t fall asleep right away, but once I settled down, I passed out immediately.
My head feels a little foggy. It seems I didn’t sleep very well. Checking the time, I realize I have plenty of time before school starts.
“Guess I’ll just grab something quick for breakfast…”
I’m not entirely familiar with the layout of my house yet.
The fridge is nearly empty. If I want a proper breakfast, I’ll need to pick up ingredients from a convenience store or supermarket.
I have enough time. To shake off my sleepiness, I decided to go out for a quick shopping trip.
After minimal preparation, I step outside.
…The sun is intense.
It’s not exactly tropical, but Yami Island is quite hot.
I aim for a convenience store about ten minutes away on foot. Convenience takes priority over cost.
Looking out into the distance, I can see the ocean. It hits me again that I’m living on an island.
Leaving the island isn’t easy. There aren’t many ferries, and it costs money. The geographical isolation makes it even harder to escape from the yanderes.
Inside the convenience store, I browse the section with sweet buns.
While comparing two options in my hands, someone taps me on the shoulder.
“Good morning, Issei-kun.”
“Ruriko-san, why are you here?”
“I was thinking of stopping by your place. The convenience store is just a detour.”
“I’m not a patient anymore, you know.”
“Still, the danger hasn’t disappeared. I’m here to protect you from such threats—”
Ruriko-san is passionately trying to convince me, but her words trail off halfway through.
“Anyway, it’s not like this is just an excuse to spend time with you, Issei-kun, okay?”
“That’s classic tsundere phrasing.”
I understand Ruriko-san’s reasoning.
This island is a den of yanderes, where one wrong move could spell disaster.
The memory of Yuu going berserk yesterday is still fresh. Danger is always close.
“I’ll protect you from the other girls’ reckless actions.”
“But Ruriko-san, you’re a bit unhinged yourself, aren’t you?”
“I’m not unhinged. I’m a perfectly normal person.”
“Normal people don’t lock others up.”
“Hmm, you might have a point.”
She admits it without hesitation.
“By the way, what are those things you’re holding in both hands?”
“This morning’s breakfast.”
“Unbelievable. A growing high school boy can’t survive on that.”
“I usually don’t eat much in the morning.”
Ruriko-san sighs deeply.
“I can’t let you get by on such a meager breakfast. Even if you’re okay with it, I’m not.”
“You sound like a nagging mom.”
“I don’t mind if you find me annoying. Starting today, I’ll be making your breakfasts.”
She says this in a way that doesn’t sound like it’s just for today.
“Are you going to make my breakfast every day from now on?”
“You have no reason to refuse, do you?”
“I appreciate it, but isn’t that a bit like being a live-in wife? Or even a girlfriend?”
“Of course. That’s exactly what I’m aiming for.”
Such a bold confession, completely straightforward and unhidden.
“So you’re going for the ‘winning his stomach’ approach?”
“Exactly.”
“But, well, it’s a lot of work. Just this once is enough.”
“I won’t back down on this. If you say no, we can always spend time together in that locked room again.”
“…Fine, as long as it’s just breakfast.”
With an exaggerated gesture, Ruriko-san cheers. Her voice is a bit loud, drawing attention from those around us.
“Ahem, sorry about that.”
“It’s fine,” I reply.
“It’s hard to argue when you threaten like that, Ruriko-san.”
“Believe me, I’d rather avoid threats and locking people up.”
“You’ve already done both, though.”
“The recent ones were unavoidable. It was all for your sake.”
“For my sake, huh.”
With my knowledge of The Most Dangerous Yandere School, I’m playing a strong and informed game. Of course, not everything follows the original plot, and irregularities abound.
Ruriko has no idea that it’s dangerous to not maintain some distance from yanderes.
Even if I wanted to share everything I know, I doubt she’d believe me.
Besides, telling her she’s just a creation of a higher-dimensional being’s imagination would be cruel.
“Well, okay. I’ll take you up on your offer for breakfast.”
“Great! One goal achieved.”
I’ve fallen right into Ruriko-san’s plan.
I put back the sweet bun I was holding and choose a red bean bun instead. Sweet things are good for a tired mind.
“What are you going to buy?”
“Vegetables, meat, eggs. Stir-fried vegetables, scrambled eggs, corn soup, and slightly fancy coffee. That’s a winning combination, right?”
“That’s the ultimate breakfast.”
Ruriko-san quickly fills the basket with the ingredients.
I didn’t even need to help her pick.
“Convenience store prices aren’t cheap. Is that okay?”
“For my allowance, this is nothing.”
“This is what wealth looks like…”
“Don’t worry about it. I insisted on this, after all.”
“Thank you,” I say, clasping my hands together in a prayerful gesture.
At the register, I notice a brightly colored card.
A quick beep, and the payment is done.
“High schoolers can use credit cards?”
“It’s a debit card. My dad set up an account and told me to use it freely.”
“Unbelievable.”
I’m reminded again of how different her world is from mine.
Carrying the stuffed shopping bags, we head back home.
“We talked a lot.”
“I hope today doesn’t turn into another last-minute race to school.”
“I’ll be more careful.”
Ruriko-san’s steps are light. It’s a bit hard to keep up.
Looking to the side, I see the sunlight glinting off the sea. I can’t help but feel summer’s arrival.
“By the way, will you make breakfast during summer vacation too?”
“Of course. If I let my guard down, another girl might swoop in, and that would be the end.”
Such an exaggeration.
Still, making breakfast every day, even during summer vacation, takes serious commitment. The embedded yandere spirit is terrifying.
“I’ll steadily work toward becoming your wife.”
“Sounds like you’re building a moat around me.”
“Once breakfast becomes a habit, moving in together won’t be far behind. ♡”
“I’ll never fall to your side.”
“Let’s see if you can resist.”
Only time will tell whether I can resist Ruriko-san’s demands or if I’ll draw a line to maintain some distance.
