I tried to confess my feelings to the girl I like, but I got too excited and ended up proposing. Was her response OK?! ~ - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
It’s morning. Morning has come.
This might be the most melancholic morning of my life.
Why am I so melancholic? The answer is simple.
It’s the day I’ll be rejected.
I don’t want to go to school. Maybe I should just go back to sleep.
With that thought, I try to close my eyes again, but my mom refuses.
“Sora! Wake up already. What time do you think it is?”
Ah, it seems like the heavens aren’t going to spoil me.
“Good morning, Mom.”
Saying so, I reluctantly get up from bed.
“Come on, hurry up, wash your face, and have breakfast.”
Prompted by my mother, I head to the bathroom.
Ah, I’m sleepy.
Usually, I use warm water, but today I’ll wash my face with cold water.
After washing my face and fixing my bed hair, I head to the living room.
“Breakfast is already served. Eat quickly or you’ll be late.”
“Yeah. Thank you.”
In our house, no matter the situation, we always have three meals a day without fail.
So even on days like today, when I wake up later than usual, I make sure to eat breakfast properly.
Doorbell rings.
“Hellooo, I’m coming! Who could it be this early in the morning? Hey Sora, can you get that?”
“Sure.”
“I’m opening it now.”
Click.
“Oh, good morning, Tenshin-kun.”
…Huh?
To my surprise, there stands Wakai-san, the girl in question, at the door.
What’s going on? Why is she here?
She did say she would talk to me in the morning, but…
“Um, Tenshin-kun? Is everything okay?”
“Oh, I didn’t expect you to come to my house, so I’m surprised.”
“I see. Indeed. I apologize for visiting your home so early in the morning.”
“No, it’s fine. So, what’s up?”
“I came to talk about yesterday’s matter. Are your parents at home? I would like to discuss it with them present, if possible.”
Huh? What’s going on? Why does she need my parents if she’s going to reject me?
Oh, right. Because what I did affects our lives.
Yeah, that must be it.
“Both of them are here. Oh, come in! Let me show you to the living room.”
“Thank you. I appreciate it.”
Saying so, she neatly arranges her shoes and enters the house.
“Mom, Dad, can we talk for a moment?”
“Oh, who’s this lovely girl? Is she your girlfriend?! Oh my! What’s the matter? Tell us everything!”
“Mom, calm down. Can I speak first? Wakai-san.”
“Yes, of course. Please go ahead.”
I never expected things to take this turn.
Why did this happen…?
While thinking about that, I tell them about what happened yesterday.
At some point, both of them start grinning, but why?
“So, she came to talk about yesterday’s matter. She thought it was something serious, so she thought it’d be better if my parents were here. I don’t really get it, though.”
As I finish explaining, I feel a tug on my sleeve from the side.
“Um, I never said I was going to reject you.”
“Huh?”
“I didn’t say that at all! I came here to accept your proposal, you know?”
Huh? Wakai-san wants to accept my proposal?
So, marriage?
Wait, what does that mean?
I can’t keep up with my thoughts.
At that moment, before I could speak, it was my father who spoke first, not my mother.
“Sora, can you make her happy?”
Um… I can’t possibly know if I can make her happy.
“Sora?”
“I don’t know. Sorry, can you give me a moment? My head isn’t catching up. I’ve been expecting to be rejected all this time.”
“No, answer now. Can you make her happy?”
Can I make her happy? There’s no way I can know.
“Sora?”
“I don’t know. Let me say it again, my head isn’t catching up yet. But if we really get married, I want us to work together to create happiness. It’s not about whether I can make her happy, it’s about both of us making each other happy.”
“I see. Mom seems to be stunned by the sudden turn of events. Um, may I ask for your name?”
“I’m Mana Wakai.”
“Mana-san, Sora is just an ordinary guy with no particular qualities. Are you okay with that?”
“He’s filled with many charms. I’ve liked him since last year. So, I was surprised at first, but I’m still happy.”
“I see. Sora, make sure to treasure her. Mana-san, please take care of this useless son of mine.”
“W-wait a minute! Mana-san, are you really okay with this?”
I can’t believe I’m saying this as the one who proposed, but isn’t something strange?
“Yes, I’m fine with it. As proof, look, I’ve already signed this!”
Saying so, she takes out something from her bag and shows it to me.
Written on that piece of paper was this.
Marriage Registration Form
That’s when I understood. She’s serious about this.
“I see… Phew… I feel relieved. I’ve been nervous since last night. I didn’t want to be rejected.”
“I won’t reject you.”
Saying so, Wakai-san smiled gently.
“Um, Mana-san. I’m inadequate, but please take care of me.”
“I’m looking forward to it. Nice to meet you.”
What will happen to my high school life from now on…
Well, it’s okay. It still doesn’t feel real, but I’ve found happiness.

The language is awfully formal. I know it is common for Japan, but It is a real struggle to pick up any warmth or understanding of the characters, other than the superficial broad strokes of stereotypes. A feel that Light and Web Novels are the equivalent of western pulp fiction from the mid to late 20th Century. Some interesting story ideas, but they are never going to win any awards for quality or originality.
I have to say, that I’ll probably drop this if the MC remains a timid, cowering simp. If he shows growth and development away from the cliché I may well stick with this, but the both of them need to develop personalities and quickly, as they are both cardboard cut-outs so far.
