Chapter 26: The Yankee’s Sunglasses
After leaving the bookstore, I ended up walking Kagurazaka-san home.
I thought a date would involve more fun activities, but according to her, crowded places tire her out, so she hates them.
She is the type who wants to read books slowly in a park or something.
The train ride only took a few minutes to reach Mishima Station.
Kagurazaka-san’s house was apparently near the shogi dojo, so we walked the same road I had taken before.
When we entered the residential area from the station front, the town atmosphere changed completely, and the sound of a dog barking came from somewhere.
“A dog?”
“Totally a dog. Probably that house’s dog. It always barks a lot.”
Kagurazaka-san pointed to a house right in front of us while saying that.
Beyond the white fence, I could see a doghouse.
“Ah…”
Then, as if remembering something, she took her smartphone out of her pocket.
“Come to think of it, I showed you the photo before, right? The super funny dog picture.”
“A dog? Oh yeah, you did show it to me in class.”
“Yeah, yeah. This one.”
Just as Kagurazaka-san scrolled through her phone nostalgically and turned the screen toward me.
“Woof! Woof woof woof woof!”
The fierce barking sounded over and over.
Then, a brown dog jumped out from behind the gate.
It still had its collar on, with the leash dangling.
And if you looked closely at its face—
“…Isn’t it wearing sunglasses?”
“Totally this one. Exactly the dog from the photo I showed before.”
Kagurazaka-san got excited at the sight matching the photo.
The dog, with the sunglasses tilted on its face, glanced at us, then approached while wagging its tail.
“A dog wearing sunglasses is coming toward us!”
“Seriously hilarious. Can I take a picture?”
“You don’t have time for that.”
The dog acted like it did not care about us at all, slipped right past us, and ran straight toward the main street.
As we watched that scene in stunned silence,
“John! Wait for me!”
A girl who looked like an elementary schooler ran out from the front door with a voice that sounded like she was about to cry.
It seemed her pet dog had escaped.
She was desperately trying to chase it, but at her running speed, there was no way she could catch up.
If things continued like this, they would get separated.
“Kagurazaka-san.”
“I know. We’re going to catch it, right?”
“Sorry. I just can’t help but care.”
“No, no. We’d lose out if we didn’t chase such a funny dog.”
We nodded to each other and decided to chase the dog, then started running at the same time.
“Woof woof! Woof woof woof woof woof…”
The dog turned a corner in the residential area and kept fleeing in a straight line.
We almost lost sight of it a few times, but each time we heard the barking, so we somehow kept it in view while chasing.
While breathing heavily, I looked at the dog again and thought.
“Those sunglasses… I feel like I’ve seen them somewhere.”
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, I think… aren’t they the yankee’s?”
“Yankee… you mean those guys?”
“Yeah, probably theirs. They said they lost their sunglasses the other day.”
“…Seriously karma.”
It was entirely possible.
I did not remember the sunglasses’ appearance clearly, so I had no proof, but they somehow felt familiar.
If that was the case, I had to get them back no matter what. I would repay the favor from when they helped me before.
Thinking that, I sped up even more.
“Woof woof woof woof woof!”
The dog eventually jumped into a nearby park.
It stopped under the slide and looked back at us.
The sunglasses, lit by the evening sun, looked strangely cool, and for some reason its pose even felt dignified. A smile naturally spread across my face.
“Wait a sec. This is seriously hilarious.”
“Don’t take a picture.”
“Come on, it’s fine. Baba-chi, you’re grinning too.”
“Can’t help it. Funny things are funny.”
We both leaked smiles while slowly closing in.
“John, come here.”
Kagurazaka-san crouched down and beckoned.
“Whine?”
The dog wagged its tail and came closer one step at a time.
The distance shrank, and the moment it was close enough to reach—
I grabbed the leash firmly.
“Got it!”
“Baba-chi, seriously nice!”
We finally caught it.
The dog tried to jump away on reflex, but since I was pulling the leash, it could not move.
It probably could not escape any further now.
“John!”
After calming the dog for a while, the girl who arrived late hugged it.
“Woof! Woof woof woof woof!”
The dog licked the girl’s face over and over while wagging its tail vigorously. Was it happy to see its owner?
The sunglasses were too assertive, so I could not really tell, but in the end, I was glad we caught it.
“Big brother, big sister, thank you!”
The girl looked up and happily thanked us.
“Yikes. We’re being thanked but I’m about to laugh.”
“You’re way too into the sunglasses.”
“Seriously unfair.”
Kagurazaka-san wiped tears from the corners of her eyes and patted the girl’s head.
“Woof woof!”
John stuck out its tongue, sat down looking satisfied, and let out a small yawn.
What a carefree dog after causing all that fuss.
But strangely, I found it endearing, so it seemed I was weak to dogs.
“Thank you!”
After parting with the girl, we left the park.
At that moment, exhaustion hit me all at once.
“I’m tired…”
“…Well, we did a good thing, and it was fun, so it’s okay.”
“Yeah. And we recovered the sunglasses too.”
I looked at the sunglasses I had received from the girl.
Dog hair was stuck to them, and on closer look, there was drool too.
Honestly, I had no proof they belonged to the yankee, but according to the girl, John had picked them up on its own.
“Guess I’ll give them back to the yankee for now.”
“They’ll definitely get scared.”
“Why⁉︎”
“Because Baba-chi is strong. Plus, if you explain the reason, they’ll be shocked.”
“Ah, yeah, saying ‘a dog had them’ probably won’t be believed.”
“Seriously horror.”
We laughed together while walking through the residential area.
It had been a while since I ran and got tired, but it was a fulfilling time.
“Okay, let’s take a little break.”
“A break?”
