- Chapter 60 - The Guardian Deity of Whistle Village
The night before, we were set to leave for the imperial port town.
I met up again with the Nightingale: Healers With No Restraint, in an abandoned village near the imperial capital.
“Long time no see, Faceless-sama!!”
“Ah, boss. Long time.”
“P-please don’t call me boss. The leader of the Nightingale: Healers With No Restraint is Faceless-sama.”
The young man scratched his cheek with a wry smile.
“Anyway, is it true that the thing’s been fixed?”
“Yes. Hey, bring it here quickly!!”
Right after the Boss shouted, the other members rolled a cart carrying something big, about three meters tall.
A white cloth covered it, so I couldn’t see what was inside.
I was excited, so I yanked the cloth off, and there it was. The robot we had brought back from the underground dungeon in the royal capital.
Wow, it still looks awesome.
“But does it look bulkier than before?”
Before, the robot had a slim, fast-looking body. Now, its arms, legs, and torso were nearly twice as thick.
And on its chest was a fist-sized red stone.
I tilted my head at the unexpected changes, and Boss started explaining and looked a little apologetic.
“It seems the engineers in Whistle Village got fired up when they saw this golem. They tried to make it perform as before using existing magic technology, but it ended up three times heavier. Power is fine, but speed? It was completely and apparently lost.”
“Huh. Actually, I like it.”
“Huh?”
“It’s like, before it was the finished model, and this feels like a prototype. It’s really cool.”
So, I decided to start it up right away.
“You touch the core on its chest. The red stone and pour magic into it while giving it a name. That will start it. Faceless-sama, please.”
“A name? Hmm, a name?”
Since it was joining the Nightingale: Healers With No Restraint as a new member, I wanted a related name.
Nightingale… Florence Nightingale…
Let’s take something from Florence…
“Then, Loren.”
I touched the core, poured in magic, and named it. Loren’s eyes glowed red.
It creaked as it stood up.
“Starting in initialization mode ―Ga, ga ―Loren. Activated.”
“Huh? Initialization mode? Did it forget the fight in the royal capital’s dungeon?”
“Affirmative. Magical intelligence is heavily damaged. Some dialogue functions are broken.”
“Magical intelligence… It’s kind of like artificial intelligence.”
“Master. Order.”
Orders, order? But I don’t know Loren’s full abilities yet, so what should I tell it to do?
“What can you do?”
“I am a combat-focused unit designed to eliminate intruders.”
“I know you can fight. Anything else?”
“…I can carry the equivalent of ten wagons of supplies at once.”
Eh, that’s amazing.
With Loren, we could even travel to distant towns and do roadside healing.
This is going to change everything.
“All right, Loren, I’m assigning you as the supply carrier for the Nightingale: Healers With No Restraint.”
“I am a combat-focused unit designed to eliminate intruders…”
For some reason, Loren started talking about its abilities again after my order. I guess it wasn’t happy just being a pack mule.
“Then use that strength to protect the supplies.”
“…Understood.”
“Oh, and I’d also like you to protect the members of Nightingale. From today, you’re the guardian of Whistle Village and its people.”
“Guardian, god?”
“Yeah. A protective god. Keep everyone safe.”
“…I will give my life… Ga, ga… understood.”
And just like that, a new member joined Whistle Village.
Now we just need to find Ruu.
It seems a lot of people came all the way to the empire, so we might need to split up. Some to search for Ruu, and some to help with the epidemic.

The day after I saw everyone in Whistle Village again, I was heading with my sister to a port town in the Rudelhardt Empire where a plague had broken out.
The town was called Zothous.
Long ago, it was given as a reward to a warrior who fought the Demon King alongside the Hero. The town was named after that warrior.
Oh, and by the way.
The Nightingale: Healers With No Restraint had already gone ahead to Zothous to set up their hideout.
From there, they planned to wander the port town and nearby villages at night, healing anyone they could.
“So you two came too.”
In the carriage to Zothous, besides my sister and me, there were two others, Ridiel and Veltica.
Ridiel puffed out her chest nervously under my sister’s sharp gaze.
“I-I’ve been ordered by His Majesty the Emperor to guard Asuku-kun and your big sister! I’ll protect you with everything I’ve got!”
“Don’t call me big sister. We’re the same age, right? …Although, it doesn’t feel like it at all in some ways.”
“Huh?”
My sister clicked her tongue while looking at Ridiel’s chest.
“Big sister, your jealousy is ―Ugh.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Asuku said something unnecessary, so my hand slipped by accident.”
“Ridiel-san, help me. She’s bullying me.”
“Eh? Eh? Um, v-violence isn’t good!!”
Then my sister’s gaze shifted to Veltica.
Veltica noticed the stare a moment later and tilted her head.
“Did you want something?”
“Were you also ordered by His Majesty the Emperor?”
“Ah, no. I just had personal business in Zothous, so I volunteered to help as a guard.”
“…I see. Work together as allies, then.”
My sister looked at Veltica’s chest and seemed to silently judge her as a teammate.
“This feels really unfair.”
“It’s fine. Both of you are still growing. There’s time. From now on.”
“This feels really unfair!! Don’t just call me a teammate without permission!!”
It seemed Ridiel didn’t understand what they were arguing about.
She whispered to me quietly.
“Hey, what are they talking about?”
“Oh, it’s about chests. Your chest, Ridiel-san, is big, and my sister’s jealous.”
“Eh, my chest?”
“Yes. It’s about chests.”
“I-is that what it was…?”
Ridiel curiously lifted her chest from underneath with both hands and gave it a little shake.
It was a little sexy.
Then, without realizing it, Ridiel said something that teased my sister even more.
“Are they really that great? They get in the way when I’m sniping, and lying face down is uncomfortable, my shoulders hurt… I’ve never thought they were all that good…”
“Big sister, stay. Veltica, stay. Ridiel, you’d better apologize for your own sake.”
“Huh? Um, apologize for having big breasts?”
“This is war.”
“I’m disappointed in you, Ridiel. I shall deliver the righteous hammer of justice!”
“W-why are you both angry!?”
I’d say that’s a fair reaction.
So, after three days of traveling while deepening our friendships like this―
We finally arrived at the town of Zothous.
I thought for sure the plague would be everywhere, with countless people on the brink of death. I was ready to make every last one of them strong and healthy again.
“…It’s so peaceful.”
“It’s completely peaceful.”
“What is going on…?”
The town of Zothous looked like there was no plague at all. People smiled on the streets, and everything seemed calm.
