- Chapter 12 - The Middle-School Syndrome Only Gets Worse if I Leave Them Alone
The day of the magic tournament had finally come.
“Ladies and gentlemen!! The long-awaited magic tournament is here!! I’m Frude Cainsetts, the second-year student and the broadcast committee’s own Madonna, and alongside me is first-year Garu Garwolf, bringing you the live commentary!!”
“Um, senpai. I joined the broadcast committee on the condition that I wouldn’t have to do anything…”
“Details don’t matter!! The preliminary battle royale is starting right now!! Watch as the usually arrogant high-ranking nobles fight dirty on the battlefield!!”
“Isn’t that why no new students want to join the committee because you only do stuff like this!?”
“Commenting on the state of the broadcast committee itself, very promising for the future!!”
…Garu, so you have joined the broadcast committee.
He didn’t have to join any committee, so maybe he got pressured into it and just gave in.
“Franc-san, another patient!!”
“Line up the seriously injured over there!! Lay the lightly injured wherever!!”
“Yes!! Oh, another one’s coming!!”
The preliminary battle royale had started in the academy’s arena, and injured students were being rushed in one after another.
I had underestimated the magic tournament a little.
I thought it was just like a school sports day, meant to test students’ skills. But in reality, it was almost a deathmatch.
It was way too dangerous for noble sons and daughters to participate.
But then again, nobles are expected to be on the front lines if war breaks out to protect their lands or kingdoms.
The magic academy was said to exist to increase nobles’ survival chances in battle.
Thinking about it that way, this life-or-death magic tournament made sense.
“Maybe there’s an entertainment side to it, too?”
Looking at the audience, I saw students who weren’t participating, famous nobles, merchants, and even commoners, all cheering anxiously.
Oh, and someone who looked like a king was there too.
With no TVs, smartphones, or manga in this world, real battles were probably the main entertainment.
Like a real-life Roman Colosseum.
“Asuku!! Stop just watching and carry the injured!!”
“Yes.”
I carried a few injured students to the medical tent and laid them on the beds.
If someone had injuries that could be life-threatening, I treated them quietly so no one would notice.
All students in the health committee could use healing magic, but only a few could instantly heal serious injuries.
At first, I also treated students with minor injuries quietly, but one health committee member yelled at me, “Why are you bringing perfectly fine students to the medical tent!?” That was sad, so I stopped.
Honestly, I wanted to rush into the arena and heal every injured student so no one would die.
But if I did that, the preliminaries would drag on, and more injuries would happen.
“…It’s impossible to do everything.”
The smell of blood made me want to use healing magic.
Maybe I should just rush into the stands and see if any injured or sick students need help.
“I heard Franc-san’s little brother was a troublemaker who skipped class all the time… but he doesn’t seem like that at all.”
“He’s carefully treating the injured even now. Maybe he’s kind, just like his sister.”
“But he doesn’t have any talent for healing magic, right?”
“You idiot!! That’s why he looks so miserable!! He’s suffering because he can’t heal anyone himself!!”
“I-I see… Alright, then, Franc-san will heal everyone in his place!!”
Huh? I think the health committee member just called my sister kind.
She’s not kind.
“Ugh, I shouldn’t have joined the magic tournament, showing off when I can’t even fight properly. It hurts…”
“It’s okay, we’ll fix it right away, so don’t worry.”
“Ah, an angel…”
“I know.”
My sister can put on an angel-like smile when someone’s feeling weak but—
“Marry me!!”
“Could you close that mouth of yours? Marrying a maggot would be better than marrying you.”
The moment she healed the student, she kept her gentle smile, but her words were sharp and cruel.
How is that kind?
Maybe I should cast healing magic on the health committee members who got abused by her words.
“Ahh!! Thought you were an angel, but you’re like a devil cursing me!! I love it!!”
“Now that you’re healed, get lost.”
She grabbed the boy who had developed a weird fascination with her and threw him out of the medical tent.
“Phew, now that the preliminaries are over, we can finally take a break.”
“The main tournament is a bracket system, right?”
“Yeah, only a few health committee members will rotate from here. You can leave now.”
“Yeah.”
Still, Garu, who had planned to watch with me, was sitting at the commentary desk as a broadcast committee member.
I had nothing else to do, so maybe I’d do some quiet healing in the stands.
With that thought, I headed toward the audience…
“Our men are already waiting in different spots. Now we just need to use this magic tool that ‘Greed’ prepared. Once we put up the barrier, the people inside will get weaker, and then we can kidnap them.”
“And if we give the kidnapped ones the Sacrifice Drug and offer them to the ‘White God,’ the curse eating away at our bodies will weaken…?”
“Be careful. ‘Greed’ and ‘Envy’ are watching this time. If we fail in front of them, we’ll be killed before the curse can take us.”
“Relax. Our plan is perfect.”
“…Hearing you say that makes me even more nervous for some reason.”
Behind the stairs, a group in white robes was whispering.
These guys had the guts and strength to kidnap Victoria after she sneaked out of the castle.
They were seriously dangerous middle-school syndrome!!
And now they were using words like “Greed” and “Envy,” like they were part of the Seven Deadly Sins…
They were definitely worse than before!!
Damn it, I still haven’t invented healing magic that can cure middle-school syndrome.
I had to stop them.
I couldn’t stop their illness from getting worse, but at least I could stop them from adding more dark, shameful memories to their lives!!
“Stop right there.”
Wearing a plague doctor mask and a black coat, I jumped out in front of the white-robed group.
They froze in shock.
“Y-you’re Faceless!?”
“How did you know about our plan!… Do we have a traitor!?”
“Let’s think about that later!! This time, we’ll finish Faceless for sure!!”
The white-robed group raised their weapons and charged at me without hesitation.
Swords, spears, axes, chain sickles…
Different weapons came at my vital spots from every direction.
It was okay. I could follow their movements this time.
“Don’t get in the way of our atonement, Faceless!!”
Clang!!
When their weapons hit my body, sparks flew.
“““““Eeh.”””””
The white-robed men all gasped in confusion.
I had been thinking about it for a long time, about what was needed to heal them.
I thought about it when I raided the clinic to heal people, when I attacked the Adventurer’s Guild to heal them, and when I stormed the soldiers’ and knights’ barracks to heal them.
Healing their minds required mental magic and memory magic. But that wasn’t enough.
These guys had serious middle-school syndrome, but they were also strong enough to overpower normal soldiers and knights.
To stop their misbehavior, I needed strength that could beat even them.
But I was just someone who boosted his body with physical enhancement magic. I had never even held a real sword. I was a complete beginner in combat.
So then, how could I become stronger?
The answer is simple. I need to modify my body even more and make it stronger.
I had been working on my body every single day.
I increased the density of my muscles and bones, improved the stretch and flexibility of my tendons, reinforced my blood vessels, and even boosted my internal organs so I’d have perfect digestion every day.
With this upgraded body, blades bounced off easily. I had gained superhuman durability.
“W-what the!? Your muscles are bulging all over, gross!!”
“D-don’t let up on your attacks!!”
“I-it’s useless!! The sword won’t go through his muscle armor!!”
“Is he even human!?”
“Monster!!”
Monster, isn’t that a bit much?
Even if I could modify my body, my mind stayed the same, so words like that still hurt.
“W-why aren’t you fighting back!?”
“…I don’t have a way to heal you yet. All I can do now is stop you from committing evil. Don’t worry, I’ll heal instantly with Extra Heal if you hit me, so you won’t get hurt.”
“Gyah.”
At a signal from their leader, the white-robed group lowered their weapons.
“Retreat.”
“W-what!? B-but if we retreat, ‘Greed’ and ‘Envy’ will kill us!!”
“I’ll try to bargain with them, using my life as a guarantee. If it’s ‘Wrath,’ maybe… but if that fails…”
“…?”
The leader of the white robes glanced at me for a moment, said nothing, and turned on his heel.
I wanted to chase them, but they vanished like mist, impossible to follow.
So they got away. Hm?
“What’s this? A golden marble?”
It’s not a dirty joke.
After the white-robed group left, a small pachinko ball rolled on the ground. Maybe they dropped it.
…I wonder how much I could sell it for?

A: “No, I’m not.”

Its just so retarded how MC keeps thinking its to do with middle school syndrome when they are clearly talkin bout terrorist and/or very evil things.
Its jus tnot a funny joke and makes mc look like he was dropped on his head as a child. Heck he’s older mentally then his age so it makes even less sense.
He hasn’t actually witnessed an actual terror attack yet, bro…
Mental age is something you build up by interacting with people: dude was infirm and confined to a bed with illness… I don’t think he got many chances to see interactions that weren’t on a TV or in a book.
