Episode 55: Choosing Ingredients at the Supermarket
Once we entered the supermarket, we started browsing together. At least we’d already picked up the ingredients for the omurice.
“So, what should we do about dinner?” “What do you feel like eating?”
“No, no, let’s be fair—since I’m cooking lunch, dinner should be your pick, Nishikikouji-kun.”
“My pick, huh? What can you make, Sasaki?” “I can make most things, but I’m best at Japanese cuisine.”
“Hmm… Japanese food, huh…” As I pondered, a sign caught my eye: Special Offer! Chicken Thighs! This was it.
“How about fried chicken? Should we go for it?” Kana peeked at the chicken package next to me.
“That’s exactly what I was thinking!” “Great minds think alike.”
“Aw, are you two a couple?” A middle-aged woman at a nearby sample station suddenly called out to us.
The unexpected comment made both of us glance at each other. “Uh, no, we’re not a couple…” Kana denied it right away.
“Oh, I’m sorry! It’s just that I always see this boy here shopping. It’s so admirable how a student takes the time to cook for himself! And today, you’re walking with such a lovely girl. I thought maybe she was your girlfriend, and you’d finally started living together.”
“Oh, uh, thank you…” “My, my, so polite and adorable! Listen, young man, don’t let a girl like this slip away, alright?”
“Er, uh… yeah…” Without thinking, I nodded in agreement. Kanna gave me a surprised look, but honestly, what else could I have done in the moment?
“Now, dear, come over here for a moment.” “Uh, okay…”
Kana stepped closer to the woman, who whispered something to her. Afterward, Kana awkwardly smiled and waved at the woman as we walked away.
“Well, that was unexpected,” I said. “Yeah, definitely surprising.”
“Do you think we really look like a couple to other people?” “Maybe? I mean, we’re a guy and a girl walking together, so…”
“Oh, I see! So that’s how it works…” As we continued shopping and chatting, I couldn’t help but notice how much more conscious I was of the people around us. Were they all seeing us as a couple too?
It felt strange—partly embarrassing, partly thrilling. After all, she was my favorite character from the game. Just walking beside her in real life was surreal.
“So, dinner will be fried chicken, salad, rice, and maybe soup, right?” “That’s a pretty fancy meal.”
“It’s nothing! Cooking for someone else is fun, so I tend to go all out. Oh, and don’t worry about the groceries—I’ll cover the cost. It’s only fair.”
“No, no, I’ll handle it. It’d be weird to make you pay.” “It’s fine. I’ve saved up a lot from part-time jobs, so this is no big deal. Besides, I feel weird if I don’t pay my share.”
“Okay… thanks, then.” “Yup!”
There was no point in being stubborn about it, especially since she was doing this out of kindness—or maybe just practicality in Kana’s case.
“I’m looking forward to visiting your place again, Nishikikouji-kun. It feels strangely calming there.”
“Really? Honestly, I still get surprised by how high up my apartment is.” “Why are you, the one living there, still surprised?”
Kana burst into laughter. “But seriously, your place has this soothing vibe. It’s kind of amazing.”
“Is that so?”“Yeah. The last time I visited, I was surprised too. I didn’t think there could be a place that relaxing.”
Her expression was sincere as she said it, and something about her words struck me.
It wasn’t just that my place was “relaxing” for her; it felt like it was becoming a safe space, her little haven. I couldn’t be sure, but if being there helped her recover, even just a little, then I was glad.
“Alright. Then I’m glad it helps.” “Yup. So, take care of me today, Nishikikoji-kun!”
As soon as we left the supermarket, Kana flashed a mischievous grin at me.
