Episode 50: Whiskey Bonbons

I’m now seen as some kind of cross-dressing delinquent—an utterly incomprehensible label. 

The curious stares from my classmates made that much clear. Well, at least Kana’s rumors seemed to have been safely quelled. 

Though the flames were extinguished, I was left with severe burns instead. Still, seeing Kana looking a bit more at ease made it a success in my book.

“This turned into a real mess, Kaede.”  “It just slipped out in the heat of the moment…”
“Well, it’s your fault for making up that kind of lie.”

“Yeah, I know it’s self-inflicted… but you don’t have to be so harsh, Shunichi.”After school, Narita and I headed to a study session with Natsuki, who was helping me review. Finals were coming up soon. 

We’d been following a schedule, so as long as we focused on thorough revisions, I should be able to manage decent scores on the tests. 

Opening the door to the classroom where Natsuki was waiting, I found her already engrossed in studying.

“Nagitsuki, thanks for helping out again today.”  “Oh, Nishikikouji, good afternoon! Thanks for coming!”  Nagitsuki, who had been inside the room already, popped up from her seat so suddenly that her textbook fell off the desk.

 Picking it up for her, I walked over to my seat. “Here you go.”  “Thank you.”  “So, where should we start today?”

 “Where… What do you think, Nishikikouji?” “I’d say it’s best to focus on reviewing the test material.”  “Okay, let’s do that! Oh, and by the way…”

Nagitsuki suddenly pulled out a bag of chocolates from behind her.  “Ta-da!”  “Chocolates?”
“Yeah! I bought them on my way home from school yesterday, thinking they’d be perfect to snack on while we study. Don’t they look tasty?”

The chocolates she brought were indeed large and fancy-looking—probably expensive and delicious.

“Alright, let’s save them for the break.”  “Yeah!”  Nagitsuki beamed at me. Her smile, as always, was adorable. So relaxing.

The study session went smoothly, and soon it was time for a break.  “Let’s have the chocolates now!”
Nagitsuki seemed thrilled as if she’d been waiting for this moment the whole time. She opened the bag and handed me one.

“Okay, let’s eat them together on the count of three—no sneaking a bite early!”  “Got it.”
“One, two, three!”  I popped the chocolate into my mouth. 

The moment I bit into it, the bitter flavor spreading through my mouth made me wince.
“Wait, isn’t this a whiskey bonbon?”  “Huh? What’s that? This tastes like alcohol or something!”

“Whiskey bonbons are a type of chocolate that has alcohol inside.”  “Alcohol!? Then does that mean… I’m a criminal now!?”

“It’s just candy, so it’s okay for minors to eat.”  “Oh? But I can’t let other people eat something with alcohol in it. I’ll take responsibility and eat them all myself!”

“W-Wait! Are you sure you can handle that, Asahina?”  “My dad’s super strong with alcohol, so I should be fine.”
“Well… if you’re confident, then I guess it’s okay.”  I accepted her reasoning. After all, I wasn’t sure if this body could handle alcohol. Based on Nishikikouji’s memories, it didn’t seem like he’d ever drunk before.

One hour after Nagitsuki ate her first bonbon. As we continued studying, she kept eating the whiskey bonbons one after another. 

Maybe it was my fault for not keeping an eye on her. She was starting to look drowsy, her face a little flushed.

“Asahina, are you sleepy?”  When I asked, she tilted her head with a vague “Hmm?”

This was definitely… “You’re drunk, aren’t you!?”
