Episode 41: To the Convenience Store

“First, you should take a bath. Ah, the changing area and bathroom are over there. The toilet is across from it.”

In the end, we shared an umbrella and walked back to my place. While giving her a quick tour of the apartment, I searched for clothes she could wear. Hmm… maybe this sweatshirt would fit her. 

For the bottoms, I had a random pair of gym shorts lying around, so that should work.

“Where should I put my wet clothes?”  “Hmm. Probably best to hang them up to dry. I’ll air them in the room, so hand them to me when you’re out of the bath.

 Oh, but what about your underwear? Wearing the same one might not feel great. Should we go buy some at the convenience store?”

 “…Yeah, let’s do that.” With that, after getting her changed out of her uniform, we headed outside again. Since this area is fairly urban, there’s a convenience store within a five-minute walk.

“By the way, aren’t you going to ask? About the situation.” Kana murmured as we walked. I glanced at her, but with her hair hanging over her face, I couldn’t see her expression.

“Well, I figured there’s probably more you don’t want to talk about than things you do.”

“I see… Then why let me stay at your place?”  “Normally… if you see a girl sitting all alone in the rain, looking like that, you wouldn’t just leave her there. At least, I wouldn’t. For better or worse.”

“…Yeah, you’re right.” Kana fell silent again. And from then on, she didn’t say another word.

“Oh, right.” I suddenly remembered something and muttered to myself. Kana glanced at me curiously.

“What is it?”  “I was just thinking about dinner. You know, I only have enough ingredients for one person at home. If it’s not too cold for you, could we stop by the supermarket? Going back to the convenience store again would be a hassle.”

“Sure. Don’t worry about me.” “Got it. Let’s go—it’s just over there.”

My place has a good location, at least. Thanks to that, even in a situation like this, there’s no trouble finding food.

I thought about just buying some pre-made dishes, but looking at Kana’s face, I felt like I wanted her to eat a freshly made, home-cooked meal instead.

“Kana, what do you want for dinner tonight?”  “Anything’s fine.”
“That doesn’t help much… Come on, don’t you have a favorite food? I’m not sure I can make it, but I’ll give it a shot.”

“Favorite food…”  “Yeah.” “I don’t know if it’s my favorite, but the fried rice my mom used to make was really good.”

“Fried rice, huh. Just the usual kind of ingredients?”  “Probably. I think she made it with whatever she had on hand… but it was delicious.”  “Got it. I can handle fried rice.”  “Okay.”

Kana just nodded. I didn’t know what had happened to her, but she was clearly feeling down.

I found myself hoping, even a little, that she could regain some of her usual brightness.

With memories of the Yandere version of Kana from the game flashing through my mind, I walked with her into the supermarket.
