The two of us entered the arcade. Since it was a weekday, it wasn’t too crowded, and it looked like we’d have plenty of freedom to try out the crane games.

“Is it that?” Ayame must have caught sight of what I was looking at. Ignoring my attempt to brush it off, she marched straight ahead.

“Do you like this character?” She was pointing at a figurine of the heroine from an anime I often watched in my previous life. I hadn’t realized that anime existed in this world too.

Come to think of it, the character kind of resembles Ayame… Not that I wanted to reveal my inner otaku.

“Well, I guess you could say I like it.” “Is that so? Then why don’t you give it a try?”

“Really?” “Yes. Um… what I’m about to say is a bit embarrassing, so could you lean in closer?”

“Uh, sure.” She moved closer, and my heartbeat quickened. The thought that she found what she was about to say more embarrassing than closing the distance made me even more nervous.

“The truth is… playing crane games with a guy at an arcade has been a dream of mine. So, I’ve secretly practiced a lot. I’m pretty skilled, you know.”

Ayame smiled shyly, rolling up her sleeves. Wow, suddenly she seemed incredibly reliable.

“Really? Then I’ll leave it to you.” “Alright! It’s this figurine, right?”

“Yeah. It’s from one of my favorite anime.” “It’s super cute. Okay, here I go.”

Ayame slowly maneuvered the claw toward the figurine. It seemed a little off-center, though…

“Perfectly lined up. This one’s definitely going to fall.” “Really!? Sorry, I thought it was off and figured it wouldn’t work.”

“Nope. Just watch.” As soon as she said that, the claw descended, grabbing the figurine and dropping it cleanly into the retrieval slot.

“It… it actually fell.” “Yep! Just as planned. I must be on a roll today.”

Ayame gave a triumphant grin. It was a fresh expression I’d never seen in the game. She’s so cute.

“Here you go.” “Thanks. Whoa, it’s the figurine. That’s awesome.”

“You look so happy. Seeing your reaction makes me happy too—after all, we’re friends.”

Ayame smiled brightly, genuinely delighted. She really is a good person.

“So, what should we try next?” “What about something you want? I’ll give it a shot.”

“Really!? Um, that one.” She pointed to a fluffy plush mascot. It was adorable, the kind of thing girls would naturally love.

“Alright, I’ll give it a try.” Together, we headed to the crane game. Oh man, hanging out with Ayame is way more fun than I expected.
