Episode 22: The Protagonist of This Story
In a classroom bathed in the glow of the setting sun, the protagonist of “And Then the World Turned Indigo”, Saitou, stood still.
“It worked… really well…”
He had cut up the gym clothes himself and staged the scene. All to frame Nishikouji.
He hadn’t expected it to go this smoothly. While he was relieved it worked, cold sweat dripped down his temple.
“Ha ha. With this, Kanaya-chan should distance herself from that guy.”
Saitou had often dreamed in the past.
Dreams where he was dating a cute girl. The kind where they both understood they genuinely loved each other, and knew they would definitely be happy together in the future.
He couldn’t remember the girl’s face, but he distinctly remembered her cuteness.
And when he met Kanaya at the entrance ceremony, he realized.
She was the girl from his dreams, and she was his destined partner.
But that very girl was fawning over another guy during a school trip. That was something he couldn’t forgive.
In the midst of this, Saitou remembered something.
He had once had a strange dream.
It wasn’t the usual dream of being gently pampered by a beautiful girl; instead, it was a nightmare where he was relentlessly bullied.
And the person doing the bullying had been Nishikouji.
He was sure of it the moment he saw him. He couldn’t remember his face, but still…
“That guy… would have started this on his own without me doing anything.”
That’s right. So, this decision was the right one. In fact, it was good that he had prepared beforehand, so that Kanaya wouldn’t suffer.
“Kanaya-chan…”
Saitou pictured the image of the beautiful girl in his mind.
Kanaya working at a maid café. Kanaya stealing glances at him during class. Kanaya in gym clothes, her curvaceous body outlined.
“Kanaya-chan…”
Saitou murmured again.
The Kanaya he met that day at the maid café had looked very surprised.
Then, she smiled, leaned in close to his ear where no one could see, and whispered that she would do anything for him, keeping it a secret.
“I won’t tell anyone.”
A secret known only to him. A part of her that only he knew.
Only he knew her wearing that frilly dress, adorned with large ribbons and lace.
At the time, Saitou had said, “I don’t need anything.” But Kanaya kept pressing him.
“For me, just seeing you in this cute outfit feels like a gift.”
Kanaya blushed slightly and looked down.
“Kanaya-chan was really cute back then…”
She really was cute. Saitou had always loved maids, but Kanaya was the cutest maid he had ever seen.
She was so cute that he kept visiting the café’s website, looking at her face over and over again.
If they started dating, he wanted her to wear all kinds of costumes. A Chinese dress, a sexy school uniform, maybe an office lady suit. A nurse costume would be nice, too. A Chinese vampire costume would be amazing. Honestly, he’d love anything as long as it was Kanaya.
“But I believe in her. Kanaya-chan was just scared of Nishikouji, so she acted that way. She was just pretending.”
Saitou clenched his uniform tightly, so hard that when he let go, creases remained in the fabric.
“Kanaya-chan, I’ll be kind to you. Nishikouji might be violent, but I’ll help with the housework and childcare. So come to me instead, okay?”
In the classroom, the boy yearned.
Dreaming of a future that might someday come.
“…But there’s no use just saying this. I have to act on it. First, let’s see… the gym clothes thing worked, so I need a new plan. What’s next… ah, right. Spreading rumors. I’ll start by posting something on the bulletin board.”
He pulled out his smartphone and, for now, anonymously posted insults about himself.
“That should do it. Let’s see how it turns out tomorrow.”
Saitou smirked, confident that it would work.
However, Saitou didn’t know.
The appearance of a reincarnator had already started changing the course of the story.
And he didn’t know that Kanaya hadn’t been blushing at all. In fact, she had been feeling a little cold toward him, and she was, in fact, on the side of the antagonist.
