Episode 13: Maybe It Wasn’t So Bad After All
“Hey, hey, Nishikōji-kun. Look at that cotton candy! It’s shaped like a rabbit! So cute~”
After eating ice cream, we started wandering around the stalls and shops in the area. There were food stands and booths everywhere. This part of the area was filled with so many delicious-looking options that it was hard not to get distracted.
“Hmm, but we just had something sweet. Maybe we should get something salty next. But then again, I can’t entirely rule out more sweets…”
If I remember correctly, in the game’s lore, Kanade loved sweet things. Maybe she’s holding back because of me?
“What do you want to eat?” I asked.
“Hmm…” Kanade tilted her head in thought.
“Is there anything you want, Nishikōji-kun?”
“Well, uh… Oh!”
“What is it?”
“That yakisoba looks pretty good.”
“Oh, you’re right! I haven’t had that in a while.”
Now that I think about it, I haven’t had yakisoba even once since arriving in this world. It used to be one of my favorite foods in my past life, but somehow it slipped my mind.
“Alright, let’s get some!”
“Wait, are you sure?”
“Of course! I want some too. Besides, you ate what I wanted earlier, right? That yakisoba does look really tasty.”
With that, she quickly made her way to the food stall.
We bought some yakisoba and sat on a nearby bench.
“This is delicious!” she exclaimed.
“It really is. There’s something special about yakisoba from food stalls.”
“Right? I haven’t had this since the summer festival back in elementary school.”
“Same here.”
“Things like this are even better because you only have them occasionally.”
“Exactly. This is seriously good.”
And eating outside on a bench like this adds to the charm.
“I can’t believe I’m eating yakisoba after having pasta and ice cream earlier. What’s happening to me…?”
“Haha, today’s calorie intake must be off the charts.”
Good thing I’m still a high schooler. With a teenager’s metabolism, I should be able to burn it all off somehow.
“So, where to next?” Kanade asked.
“Let’s just wander around some more?”
“Sounds good! There are still plenty of stalls, and so many tasty-looking things left to try.”
“Yeah. By the way, is there some kind of festival going on today?”
“Hmm, I’m not sure, but there’s a shrine nearby.”
“That explains it.”
In my past life, there was a fairly large shrine near my house, so I get it. Places like that tend to hold big festivals every now and then. This one must’ve coincided with our school trip.
“There was even an idol concert nearby, so today’s a pretty packed day.”
“No wonder it’s so crowded.”
“Other groups might have gotten lost too.”
“Yeah, that crowd earlier was insane.”
While chatting, we finished eating. After throwing away the yakisoba containers, we resumed walking.
Soon, the food stalls disappeared, and we found ourselves in an area filled with activity booths like goldfish scooping and other games. There were noticeably more children around.
“Shooting gallery! Can I try it?” Kanade said excitedly.
“Sure. I’ll give it a shot too.”
“Alright! Let’s do it together. I’m going to aim for that plushie over there!”
Kanade grabbed the gun and aimed at the plushie. She fired three shots but missed every time.
“This is harder than I thought,” she pouted.
“Mind if I give it a try next?” I asked.
“Go for it! Good luck!”
I picked up the wooden gun and aimed for the plushie Kanade wanted.
Since becoming Nishikōji, my focus has been on a whole different level. Honestly, this guy’s body might have been high-spec. I’ve noticed it in things like my physical abilities too.
I steadied my aim and shot. On the first try, the plushie fell down.
“Whoa, you got it in one shot! Nishikōji-kun, you’re amazing!”
“Really? Thanks.”
“You really are! Didn’t you always rank first in gym class back in middle school?”
“Well, yeah… I guess it’s because I’ve been working out.”
Nishikōji was apparently ridiculously athletic… which might explain how he managed to dominate in such a bad way back then.
I handed the plushie to Kanade.
“Huh? For me?”
“Yeah, I got it for you.”
“Wait, really? Thanks, but I don’t know if I can accept this…”
“But I don’t need it, so it’s yours.”
I gently insisted, and Kanade reluctantly accepted it.
“Are you sure?”
“Of course. Enjoy.”
“Thank you… I’ll take good care of it.”
She smiled and carefully placed the plushie in her backpack.
“You’re really good at handling girls, Nishikōji-kun.”
“Am I?”
“You always know exactly how to make us happy. Plus, I saw you back in middle school with that college girl you were dating. She even came to the school gate once, didn’t she?”
Oh yeah, in the original story, Nishikōji was a total womanizer.
He was used to dealing with women… but now it’s my personality at the helm. Could I be influenced by his memories? There’s no way I would’ve done this naturally in my past life. Yet, here I am, doing it without even realizing it.
If that’s true, it’s kind of terrifying.
“Well, yeah, I did date people back then.”
“See? Oh, wait, we’re almost out of time!”
“Wow, you’re right. I didn’t even notice.”
Time had flown by so quickly.
We made our way to the meeting spot, as instructed. Kanade and I met up with the others, including Yamada and Kido, and I finally got a chance to apologize.
“Alright, see you tomorrow at school!”
Kanade waved goodbye, her radiant smile lighting up her face.
…Was my behavior today really okay? I’m not entirely sure, but it might’ve been a good day after all.
