- Chapter 154 - Helping Yukimura With Her Shopping
Some time later…
“Welcome back.”
“Huh? Oh, I’m back.”
After finishing lunch in the cafeteria and returning to the classroom, I noticed that Yukimura had already arrived before me.
So, I responded to her greeting and sat down at my desk.
“You got back earlier than I did, Yukimura. So, what was that talk with the captain of the girls’ tennis club about?”
“Oh, yeah. The club got approval for an additional budget, so they asked me to go buy the equipment we’re running low on.”
“Really? Going out to buy equipment sounds like a tough job.”
“Yeah, it is. We’re short on a lot of supplies, so I’ll have to make several trips to the sports shop near the station. Just thinking about it makes me a little depressed…Sigh…”
Yukimura sighed as she spoke.
“Oh, so you have to go all the way to the sports shop near the station. That does sound tough…Wait, but why are you the one in charge of buying equipment for the girls’ tennis club?”
“Ah, well, the club budget can only be handled by the captain or the vice-captain. So, it’s either the captain or the vice-captain who has to go buy the equipment. But since Captain Sakaki is busy studying for exams, I offered to go instead this time.”
“Huh, I see…Wait, what?! Yukimura, you’re the vice-captain of the girls’ tennis club?”
“Yeah? I am.”
I had no idea. I was genuinely surprised. But being in such a responsible position felt very much like Yukimura, with her serious personality.
“I get it now. So that’s why you, as the vice-captain, are going to buy the equipment…Oh, hey, how about I help you with that shopping?”
“Huh? You?”
“Yeah, exactly. If you’re buying equipment, there’ll probably be some heavy stuff, right? It’d be handy to have an extra pair of hands, don’t you think?”
And since it’s the girls’ tennis club, they probably don’t have any male members to help out when they need it.
Thinking that, I offered to assist Yukimura with her shopping.
“Uh, um, I really appreciate the offer, but…are you sure? Shopping isn’t exactly fun, you know.”
“Ah, it’s fine. As long as I’m not a bother to you.”
“No, no, you wouldn’t be a bother at all! Well, then…could I ask for your help?”
“Alright, then. Just let me know when you’re going to buy the equipment, and I’ll tag along.”
“Okay, I will.”
And with that, we made plans for me to help Yukimura with the shopping.
◇◇◇◇
A few hours later, after school.
“So…would it be alright if you helped me with the shopping now?”
“Yeah, of course. We’re heading to the sports shop near the station, right? Let’s get going!”
“Y-Yeah, okay.”
With that, we left the classroom and started walking toward the sports shop near the station.
“But Yukimura, you’ve got it rough. You’re studying at cram school, doing club activities, and now even buying equipment…Haha, you’re really amazing.”
“N-No, I’m not that amazing. I spend more time on hobbies and having fun than you might think.”
“Really? Oh, by the way, what do you usually do on your days off, other than cram school and club activities?”
As we walked toward the sports shop, I asked her casually.
“Well, I mostly read books or watch movies on a subscription service. Lately, I’ve also been going to convenience stores or supermarkets to buy sweets. I’ve been studying so much recently that I’ve been eating more sweets to replenish my energy.”
“Ah, I see. But eating a lot of sweets is a good thing! They say sugar is important for your brain to recharge, and eating sweets makes you feel really happy, so it’s great!”
“Hehe, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I think you might be eating too many sweets.”
As I passionately spoke about my love for sweets, Yukimura laughed and teased me.
“Haha, you might be right. Oh, by the way, what are we buying at the sports shop today? Is it a lot of heavy stuff?”
“Oh, I didn’t tell you what we’re buying yet, did I? Today, we’re getting…tennis balls, grip tape, gut tape, and a bunch of consumables like tape.”
“I see, I got it.”
Yukimura took out a small piece of paper from her bag and showed me the list of things we needed to buy. It seemed that everything was written down on that small paper.
Out of curiosity, I glanced at the list. And then…
“…Why is there a bear?”
“Huh? Oh, no!”
On the corner of the paper, there was a cute doodle of a bear. It was probably something Yukimura had drawn herself.
“Hey! Don’t look at it without permission!”
“Haha, no need to be embarrassed. It’s an adorable drawing. Did you draw it, Yukimura?”
“Ugh…Y-Yeah, I did.”
Yukimura answered, blushing. She’s always so serious, but seeing her doodle a cute bear in the corner of her paper was such a charming contrast that I couldn’t help but think it was adorable.
“…Why are you grinning like that? Hmph, you must think it’s childish of me to doodle like this, right?”
“No, no, not at all. In fact, I think it’s really cute that someone as serious as you drew such an adorable illustration.”
“Wha—!? Ugh…You’re not allowed to call me cute anymore!”
Yukimura glared at me with a sulky expression. But I could tell she wasn’t actually mad, so I just laughed and brushed it off.
“Haha, sorry about that. And thanks for telling me what we’re buying today. So, it sounds like we’re getting a lot of small items rather than heavy ones, huh?”
“Y-Yeah, that’s right. If I had to do it alone, I’d probably have to make a few trips…So, I’m really glad you’re here to help.”
“Well, I’m glad to hear that. I’m happy to be able to help you out, Yukimura. So, if you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask me, okay? I’m always here to lend a hand.”
“Huh? O-Okay. Th-Thank you…really…”
I made sure to convey my thoughts to Yukimura, and we continued chatting as we made our way to the sports shop near the station.
