Chapter 89 – Emotion in Music
As preparations for the school culture festival progressed, I spent my days practicing the piano under Takatori-sensei’s guidance, preparing me with a required song.
“Taketo-sama, I brought you a lunch box.”
“Thanks, Nazuna. How is everyone doing?”
I come to the old school building to practice during breaks and lunchtime.
I haven’t been able to participate much in class preparation.
Individual performance and club members are given priority over classes, so it’s not a problem.
“Tatemiya-kun said that he wouldn’t be able to participate in class preparation because he was gathering his band members to perform. Apart from that, students involved in clubs have limited time for both club activities and class preparations, so there are only few who can focus solely on class.”
“Well, if you need anything, just let me know. I’ll do my best to help.”
“Fufu, thank you very much. Since it’s a maid cafe, the preparations mainly involve decorating, choosing maid outfits, and deciding on the menu. Honestly, we should be able to manage with just decorating. The maid outfit has already been chosen by Taketo-sama, so that’s settled.”
The destructive power of the maid outfits that Nazuna and Mimi wore were amazing.
A petite Nazuna in a mini-skirt maid outfit and white tights.
A slender Mimi in a long-skirt maid outfit and black tights.
Both had their own distinct personalities and suited them very well, so much so that I ended up heading to the dormitory with the two of them that night.
I have to reflect on that.
“Nazuna looks cute no matter what she wears, so I’m worried. I think you’ll get a lot of attention on the day of the culture festival.”
“W-What are you saying?!! I only have eyes for Taketo-sama! I’m not interested in any other men!”
After finishing lunch, I played the pieces that were assigned to me to tease Nazuna, whose face had turned red. For my performance, I will be performing three pieces.
The first piece is chosen to liven up the atmosphere, a bright and comical song.
The second piece is a challenging and overwhelming one to showcase technical skills.
The third piece, chosen to conclude the performance, is a ballad.
I can understand Takatori-sensei’s thoughts on what these choices mean.
The second piece was flashy to showcase technical prowess, while the third piece emphasized not only technical skill but also the importance of conveying emotions to the audience.
“Nazuna. I’m going to play the ballad now, can you listen to it?”
“Of course. Is it okay for Taketo-sama to play it just for me?”
“Yeah, I want to put some emotion into it, so I’ll play it thinking of Nazuna.”
A ballad that is played to convey emotions to the listener.
Nazuna lost her mother. Her scumbag of a father made her go through hard times. She also kept her feelings for me a secret and chose to sacrifice herself for her scumbag father. How would her story end? Would it be love that ends in sadness? Or would she end up with her first love, which is me? I expressed all those feelings through the piano.
When I played the piano thinking of Nazuna, I put my feelings into it, intending to repay her love in my own way for her strength and bravery.
“Nazuna?”
After I finished playing the piano, I looked at Nazuna.
“Ah, I-I’m sorry.”
Nazuna was crying.
“It was really wonderful. I could really feel that Taketo-sama was thinking of me when he played. I’m glad that Taketo-sama understands what I was going through, and that he kindly embraces and loves me.”
“I’m glad. It seems like I was able to convey what I intended.”
“Thank you. I can truly understand that you’ve been thinking about me, Taketo-sama.”
When I express myself through music, I sometimes think about someone else, but I realized once again how difficult it is to play for just one person, and how difficult it is to convey that feeling.
No matter how advanced your technique is, expressing something has a different meaning.
“That’s good then. Looks like I played it well.”
“Yes, thank you very much!”
I embraced Nazuna, who was shedding tears.

[Tatemiya Yuushi’s POV]
Collaborating with Ui and Saruwatari Gorimi-senpai, Ui plays the keyboard and synthesizer, while Gorimi-senpai plays the drums.
“Tatemiya, you are certainly good at singing. But don’t you intend to put more emotion and passion into it?”
It was all well and good until I decided to put the highly skilled Ui in the band as a member and show her some good points, but whether it was a difference in musicality or not, it didn’t work out well.
“I am doing it. I’m singing while playing the guitar. Isn’t it enough to sing well?”
“Sigh, you don’t understand. Art is the power of expression. Whether it’s writing, painting, or playing music, if there’s no emotion put into it, it won’t be understood by the audience. Even AI illustrations contain the feelings of the person who creates them.”
Ui is stubborn and noisy.
I can sing well and play the guitar.
That alone makes me look cool to others.
It’s a shame because she has a beautiful appearance, but I don’t think Ui and I are a good match.
“Anyway, the technical aspects are fine now. I came to see your abilities, but I won’t participate in any more practice from now on.”
“Do whatever you want.”
I was left with Gorimi-senpai in the empty classroom I borrowed for practice.
“Senpai, I apologize for asking for your help.”
“It’s fine. You’re good at singing, and Ui-kun’s performance is divine. I can only play simple rhythms, so I apologize for that.”
“No, it’s easy to sing because Senpai has a stable rhythm that doesn’t break.”
“I see. Well, this is my last culture festival. Let me help out.”
While expressing gratitude towards Gorimi-senpai, I couldn’t help but feel anger towards Ui, who left in a huff.
