Chapter 4: Angel, Me, and the Goddess’s Jealousy
“Nice to meet you, Ogami-kun♪”
“Yeah, nice to meet you too.”
While replying to Angel, I began preparing for first period. First period was modern Japanese. I took the textbook and notebook from my desk and waited for the teacher to arrive.
As I waited for the modern Japanese teacher to come, Angel poked my right arm with her beautiful index finger.
Wondering what it was, I glanced at her and asked.
“What’s up?”
“Ogami-kun, actually, I haven’t received my textbook yet. I’m really sorry, but could you let me see yours?”
Maybe there was some kind of mistake. Without a textbook, she wouldn’t be able to follow the class, so I willingly agreed.
“Yeah, sure.”
“Thank you. Then I’ll move my desk closer.”
Angel gave me a lovely, angelic smile and scooted her desk over.
When she did, I felt a sort of gaze and looked around. I realized all the boys in the classroom were staring this way.
Most of them were glaring at me with jealous eyes. Suzuki even had tears of frustration running down his face and was biting his lower lip.
They were probably dying of envy because I got to study next to a beautiful transfer student.
But really, I was just showing her the textbook because she happened to sit next to me. If they’re going to get jealous over something like this, I can’t take it.
I already get enough jealousy just for being childhood friends with Hina. Now I’m getting it for sitting next to a pretty new girl?
Even if they’re jealous, nothing is going to happen between me and Hina, or me and the transfer student.
“Sorry. It’s hard to see the book. Can I move a little closer?”
“Eh? Ah, yeah.”
Angel said that and moved even closer to me. Her beautifully sculpted hand brushed against my arm.
It was cold and smooth.
Different from Hina’s warm, soft, mochi-like hands I was used to. The fresh sensation made my heart skip a beat.
“Here we go…”
As Angel scooted her chair closer, the shock made the contents of her desk stick out a little.
I noticed something inside that caught my attention.
It was a modern Japanese textbook. I thought it might be from her old school, but it was the exact same textbook we used here.
In other words… she did have the textbook. So why did she ask me to share mine?
“Huh?”
As I wondered about that, I noticed the boys’ jealous stares getting even more intense. And even Hina was glaring at me with a sharp look.
What’s going on? Hina looks seriously upset today. It’s not unusual at home, but seeing her this grumpy out in public is rare.
Our eyes met. She pointed outside the classroom with a beckoning motion. It clearly meant, “We need to talk. Meet me outside after this.”
If I ignored her, it would be a pain later, so I formed a small circle with my right hand as a sign that I understood.

First period ended, and it was break time.
As soon as class was over, classmates crowded around Angel and started bombarding her with questions, as part of the typical transfer student welcome.
From the classic “Where did you live before?” to weird questions like “What do you think of Japan’s economy?” and “What’s your favorite muscle group?”, even personal ones like “Do you have a boyfriend?” were flying around.
Angel laughed and answered all the questions politely.
“I used to live in ○○ City.”
“Eh… Japan’s economy? Sorry, I don’t really know much about economics…”
“Favorite muscle group…? I guess the trapezius muscles?”
“Boyfriend…? I think it’s still too early for me.”
Being able to answer those dumb questions with a smile is kind of amazing. If it were me, I’d punch the questioner.
I still didn’t fully understand her personality, but maybe she really is a good person, just like her big-sounding name “Amatsuka,” which means angel.
I slipped through the classmates crowded around her and headed outside the classroom to meet Hina like I promised.
Outside, Hina was already leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, looking grumpy.
Since all the classmates were obsessed with Angel right now, no one saw the goddess—or rather, the demon god—looking so sour outside. She clearly planned it that way.
“You’re late.”
“Sorry. Everyone was around Angel, so I couldn’t get away. So, what do you want?”
“You… weren’t you getting a little too close to that angel girl?”
“No, that’s… she just said she couldn’t see the textbook and moved closer. I didn’t do anything.”
“Hmm… Well, don’t act too flirty. …Or someone’s gonna get jealous.”
That was all Hina said before quickly going back into the classroom.
“Eh, that’s it?”
I felt let down. She went out of her way to call me out, so I thought it would be something more serious.
But I do get it. Being next to a beautiful girl does make people jealous, and since I’m always with Hina, I probably understand that better than anyone.
After a short while, I returned to the classroom. Angel was still surrounded by people, and somehow, Hina had joined the group.
She still acts friendly as always. You could call it high social skills.
“Nice to meet you, Angel-san! I’m Unasu Hina. Just call me Hina!”
“I’m Amatsuka Akua. Nice to meet you too. You can call me Akua.”
The two smiled and introduced themselves to each other.
A classmate watching them said, “It’s a meeting between the goddess and Angel!”
“Goddess…?”
Hearing that word, Angel tilted her head as she looked at Hina.
“Unasu-san is like the school’s goddess.”
“She’s beautiful, smart, and has a great personality. Totally a goddess!”
“Ahaha… Don’t worry about it. It’s not that big of a deal…”
The classmates explained why Hina was called a “goddess,” and she humbly downplayed it.
“I see…”
But when Angel heard that, her eyes seemed to flash mysteriously… or maybe I just imagined it.
