Chapter 10: Goddess’ Offensive
Chirp chirp
Small birds were singing outside the window, and the sunlight peeking through the curtains announced the arrival of morning. I reached out from under the blanket, grabbed my phone which was placed beside the bed, and checked the time.
7:00 AM. Normally, this would be the time when Hina would come to wake me up for school. But today is Saturday. There’s no school, so Hina won’t come.
In other words… I could sleep as much as I wanted in bed.
Since Hina usually wakes me up early, I thought I’d sleep until the afternoon today. Especially since I was tired from helping the Angel try to gain popularity this week.
I pulled the blanket up over my head and drifted back into the world of dreams.

Thud!
How much time had passed? Suddenly, I felt a heavy shock on my stomach, and my consciousness floated up from the dream world. I rubbed my still sleepy eyes, stuck my face out from under the blanket, and looked around to see what was going on.
“Oh, you’re awake.”
Looking at me, Hina was sitting on top of the blanket. This was Hina’s way of waking me up. She would jump on top of the blanket while I was sleeping. The shock would wake me up.
Since it was a holiday, she wasn’t in her school uniform but rather in a casual outfit—a shoulderless T-shirt and shorts. Her hair was tied in a ponytail.
“Hey, it’s Saturday… It’s a holiday, so let me sleep…”
“It’s already 10 AM. Get up!”
She said that, and I checked the time. It was indeed past 10.
To be honest, I wanted to sleep a little longer, but she would stop me from doing so. So, reluctantly, I decided to get up.
I told Hina to move off the blanket, stifled a yawn, and got out of bed. I grabbed a random hoodie and pants from the dresser and put them on.
Even though she’s my childhood friend, it felt a little embarrassing to stay in just a tank top and boxer shorts.
“So, what’s going on today? Do you need something?”
When Hina comes to see me on a holiday, it usually means she wants me to do something. I had gotten used to going along with her whims by now.
“Well, yeah… It’s sort of something I need.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Whatever, let me eat breakfast first.”
It was fine to go along with her, but I was hungry.
…By the way, on weekends at the Ogami household, breakfast is not made by my mom but rather everyone makes their own meal from whatever is in the fridge. My mom had wanted her weekends off for years, so this had been the routine.
I figured I could just toast some bread and put a fried egg on top. I opened the door to my room and started heading to the kitchen to make breakfast.
“Wait a second, here.”
“Huh?”
Hina called out to me and handed me a white box. When I opened the lid, there were two small cupcakes inside.
“What’s this?”
“Cupcakes. I made them. Perfect for breakfast, don’t you think?”
It was rare for Hina to make me something sweet.
But then I quickly realized something, and it made sense.
…Hina had been practicing making lunch boxes for someone she liked for a few days. So, this must be part of that practice.
“I see. So this is also practice for making food for the person you like. I just eat it and give you my thoughts, right?”
“Huh? No… That’s not it. This is… um, for you…”
Hina blushed a little, looked away from me, and stammered. It seemed like she was desperately searching for the right words. I was a little confused by her reaction, which was different from usual.
“Uh… yeah! This is a token of my gratitude to Takayasu!”
“A token of gratitude?”
“You know how I always drag you into stuff, right? So this is… a token of my gratitude.”
It seemed like she was aware that she often got me involved in things. So, these cupcakes were her way of thanking me.
It was really rare for the Demon God to show gratitude like this. I wondered if it was going to rain tomorrow and checked the weather forecast on my phone. To my surprise, it was marked as clear.
“Ah, uh, thanks?”
I didn’t know what to say to her unusual response, and I couldn’t think of the right words quickly.
I just stood there, staring at the box of cupcakes.
“Aren’t you going to eat them?”
Hina looked at me with an anxious expression, as I had yet to touch the cupcakes.
She was a beautiful girl, praised as a “Goddess.” It was rare for her to show such a demure expression, and I found myself unexpectedly taken aback by it.
What was going on? Hina was acting really strange today. Where had the confident, selfish “Demon God” gone?
“Y-yeah, I’ll eat them. But I’m going to get a drink first.”
“Okay, take your time.”
Feeling awkward, I quickly went to get a drink.
“Ah, geez. Why am I…”
After I left the room, I heard a sound like Hina was banging her head against the wall.
I was curious about what she was doing, but I was still shaken, so I didn’t feel like going back to the room immediately.

Somehow, after calming down, I returned to my room and ate the cupcakes.
They were pretty good. I preferred sweets with a more subtle sweetness, but these had just the right level of sweetness for me.
I gave Hina my thoughts on the cupcakes. She smiled shyly, looking pleased.
Normally, she would proudly say, “Of course they’re good! I made them!” with confidence.
After finishing the cupcakes, I asked her again what she needed.
“So, what was it you wanted?”
“Right! I thought we could watch this together.”
Hina pulled out a tablet, and on it was a horror movie that had become a hot topic for being really scary not long ago. It seemed to have already been added to a video streaming site.
“Wait, Hina, you’re not good with horror, right?”
In fact, she was terrified of things like monsters and ghosts. So, she usually avoided watching such things.
Why did she want to watch a horror movie today? I had no idea.
“Well, if I watch it with you, it won’t be as scary, right?”
“Then don’t watch it.”
“I… I have to watch it to keep up with the conversation! Now, sit down!”
“Ugh… Fine, I guess.”
Hina urged me to sit on the sofa, then placed the tablet on the table in front of it.
What happened next really surprised me.
“Huh… Hina, what are you doing?”
Hina sat down between my legs on the sofa and leaned against me.
Our bodies were in extremely close contact. If this had happened during the pandemic, we would have been scolded for being too close.
Normally, I wouldn’t care. I’d just say, “Get off me, you’re heavy.”
But today, I found myself getting flustered by every little thing she did. Maybe I was getting a little affected by her unusual behavior.
“Hey, I can’t see the screen with your head in the way… You can sit next to me, there’s space.”
“Well… I’m scared, so I want to be as close as possible.”
She pleaded with me, looking anxious.
Ah, there it was again. She was acting so different from usual.
Normally, she would have said, “You should feel honored that the Goddess is letting you use me as a sofa!”
Her reactions today were really messing with my head.
Hina started the movie on the tablet, and a monster appeared on screen up close.
“Eek!”
She clung to me, tears welling in her eyes.
Shivering, she looked nothing like the selfish Demon God, but instead like a delicate girl.
I watched the movie, trying not to let her notice my own unease.
