Chapter 30: 3 to 1 for Forced Exercise!? In the End, the Only Reason for the 2-Kilo Gain Was Overeating!
“Well then! Since Ouka-san is going to exercise, as a pro in fitness, I’ll create the perfect training menu just for you!”
After school, I was about to head home to study, but right as I reached the door, Nakano stopped me.
And since Nakano had decided to start exercising, the situation was now three against one. Naturally, that meant I was dragged along too.
In the end, Tsunekawa and Nakano forcibly took me to the school field.
“Nakano’s the one exercising, so this has nothing to do with me, right? I don’t have to go, do I…?”
“No way! Right now, it’s three against one, so the minority has to follow along! Since the three of us are exercising, Nagisa-chan has to come too!”
“What kind of logic is that? Three against one? Since when was there a vote? I don’t wanna! I just wanna go home and study!”
“Life’s source is in movement! Since Ouka-san decided to exercise, Nagisa-chan has no right to refuse! Now hurry up! First, let’s start with two laps as a warm-up!”
What kind of nonsense is this!? Why do I have to obey their orders? If it were Sasaki-sensei’s command, I’d have no choice, but if it’s not, then there’s no way I’m doing this…
“No way! I have the right to protect my own freedom, so I’m going home to study!”
“Oh? Studying, huh? Misaki-kun, let me ask you something—does studying even work?”
Tsunekawa shot me a sidelong glance, her gaze slightly mocking. Honestly, it ticked me off a little.
To be fair, I haven’t really seen any results yet. But I know that if I don’t study, I won’t improve. That’s why I have to keep at it.
“U-Uhh… It’s not showing results right now, but if I keep at it for a long time, I believe it’ll pay off!”
“Haah…”
Hearing that, Tsunekawa let out a long sigh, as if saying, “This guy’s hopeless.”
What the hell, huh!? You looking down on me!?
“Misaki-kun, studying is all about efficiency. If you’re not using your head, it’s just a waste of time. But if you join us for exercise, I’ll tutor you in Japanese and English. If I recall, those are your weakest subjects, right?”
W-What kind of offer is that!? That’s actually really tempting!
It’s true that mindlessly studying isn’t as effective as having someone good at it teach me.
…But I still don’t wanna exercise! It’s too hot!
As I pondered, I felt like a little angel and devil had popped up on my shoulders, arguing back and forth.
“Life is in movement! If you don’t exercise, you won’t stay healthy!”
“Exercise? You’re already strong enough, aren’t you? You don’t need to exercise! Just go home and study!”
“You damn devil! Shut up! Tsunekawa-san said she’d tutor you! Studying alone is barely effective, right? It’s way more efficient to have Tsunekawa-san teach you!”
“You don’t get it at all! Who’s to say Tsunekawa Momiji will actually teach you properly!?”
“Shut up! Just be quiet!”
In the end, the angel won against the devil.
After thinking it over, I decided to give in.
“…Fine. I’ll join in.”
Tsunekawa is really good at Japanese and English, so if I can get her help, it’ll be worth sacrificing a bit of time to avoid getting scolded by Sasaki-sensei.
Once I made up my mind, Satohama gave the order. We started with two laps around the field as a warm-up.
“Phew… I’m exhausted…”
After two laps, Nakano was completely out of breath, leaning over with her hands on her knees, panting hard. Looks like she’s not great at exercise.
“Alright, next up—push-ups!”
Satohama announced loudly before pressing Nakano down onto the ground.
“Ehh!?! But I’m already so tired! Can’t I rest a bit first?”
“This was just the warm-up, you know? Are you already at your limit?”
“Uhh… Satohama-san, don’t you think aerobic exercise is better for losing weight?”
Push-ups are strength training, but when it comes to burning fat, aerobic exercise is way more effective.
Nakano just wants to lose fat, not build muscle. If she’s not looking to change her body shape, then aerobic exercise alone is fine.
But if she is aiming to shape her body, then she’ll need to do strength training first, followed by aerobic exercise.
Besides, losing fat isn’t just about exercise—dieting is important too. Exercise alone won’t cut it.
“Eh? Ouka-san, didn’t you start exercising for the entrance exams?”
“Huh? Nakano, you didn’t tell them?”
“Ugh… I didn’t want everyone to know! Don’t say weird things! Geez… Misaki-kun you idiot!”
“Hah!? What’s with you all of a sudden?! I didn’t do it on purpose…!”
“Liar! That was totally on purpose! Idiot! I hate you, Misaki-kun!”
She’s making such a big deal over just gaining two kilos. The three of them are close friends, so she doesn’t need to hide it, right?
Honestly, if she didn’t want them to know she gained weight, she shouldn’t have told me in the first place…
“W-Well, whatever. Forget I said anything. But I’ll tell you this—if you’re in your current condition, aerobic exercise is all you need. Strength training isn’t necessary. But if you want to shape your body, then you’ll need it.”
Honestly, from what I can see, Nakano’s body is already perfect. She doesn’t need to work out at all.
Why do girls worry so much about this stuff?
“S-So… What now? Who’s gonna teach me?”
Satohama was holding her head, looking utterly lost as she watched Nakano and me talk.
“Uh… don’t ask me, ask Nakano.”
I shut up right away. I didn’t want to get hit with Nakano’s weird hostility again.
Getting called “idiot” or “dumb” by Umika all the time… it really gets to me, you know!?
Hearing stuff like that honestly wears down my mental state. Please, guys, stop bullying me…!
“Ouka, why’d you suddenly decide to start exercising? You still haven’t told us the reason.”
“Yeah, even in gym class, you always refused to move.”
“Uhh… W-Well, actually, I gained two kilos… So I just wanted to lose a little and maintain my figure.”
“That’s all?”
Hearing that, Tsunekawa’s face froze for a moment.
She was probably thinking the same thing I was—“You don’t need to exercise for that, do you?”
“Y-Yeah… What’s wrong?”
“Haah…”
Tsunekawa held her forehead and let out another deep sigh. An even deeper one than the one she directed at me earlier.
“What’s up, Momiji-chan? Why the deep sigh all of a sudden? Something wrong?”
“Actually…”
“Ayana, be quiet for a second.”
Satohama tried to say something, but Tsunekawa cut her off.
Then, taking a deep breath, she looked at Nakano with a calm yet serious expression—like she was about to impart some grand life lesson.
Curious about what she’d say, I sat down on the steps and listened carefully.
“You know, weight isn’t something you need to stress over. It naturally goes up and down, and no one can keep the exact same weight every day.”
“But even when I check the scale every morning, I never really notice any changes!”
“In the morning? You weigh yourself right after waking up?”
“Yeah… Why?”
“Then how did you notice you gained 2kg?”
“Huh? Oh, I was at the convenience store with Misaki-kun around noon, and there was a scale, so I figured I’d check.”
“Hmm… So, if I told you that you only gained weight because you ate too much, how would you feel about that?”
“Huh? Well… that’d be fine, I guess. I mean, it’ll go back down after I digest everything, right?”
“Exactly.”
“Wait… so you’re saying… I only gained 2kg because I overate!?”
Nakano’s eyes widened in shock, while Tsunekawa sighed in exasperation.
“You ate a lot at lunch today, didn’t you? Plus, you drank a ton of water. That 2kg is just all the food and liquid you consumed.”
“Huh!? So that’s what it was!”
“That’s why you don’t need to worry about losing weight. But if you still want to exercise for the exams, we’ll train with you.”
“Ohhh! Got it! Then I’ve decided—I’m done with exercise!”
…This girl. The moment she realized her weight gain was just from eating, she immediately gave up on working out.
“Ouka!”
Tsunekawa suddenly called out to Nakano in a firm, almost severe voice. It was so intense that even I, standing beside her, flinched.
“Ahaha… okay, okay! Fine, I’ll keep training!”
“That’s the spirit! And Misaki-kun, you’re in too.”
“Yeah, yeah… but you promised, remember? You guys have to help me study too!”
“Of course! Leave it to us.”
And so, that afternoon, we found ourselves out on the school field, training under the blazing sun…
