Chapter 27: Misaki Siblings vs. Homework! Teaching My Little Sister is an Ultra S-Rank Challenge!
Final exams are just around the corner.
Apparently, the schools in the ALCATRAZ district have different rules compared to those in the DEATH district.
Not only do we have written exams, but there are also physical tests. Our overall grades are determined by combining both scores. Wait, why does P.E. even count toward our grades?!
…Well, I guess it doesn’t matter. I’m good at sports.
After all, I’ve been practicing martial arts for ages! I can run fast, and my reflexes are top-notch.
When it comes to running away, no one in DARK City can beat me! I’ve never been caught. Ever.
So yeah, the physical test? Easy. (Unless it’s a part-time job… that’s a different story.)
But the real problem… is the written exam!
Japanese and English—these two subjects are absolutely brutal!
How bad, you ask? I once scored a zero.
And no, it wasn’t because I left the paper blank. I actually wrote stuff down, but somehow, I still got zero points. Meanwhile, people who just filled in random answers got higher scores than me. How does that even work?!
This is beyond just a bad grade—this is full-blown academic disaster level!!
Man, with grades like these, how am I supposed to survive final exams? This is impossible…
If my scores come in, Sasaki-sensei might actually kill me… That’s terrifying!
So, with no other choice, I decided to study.
On top of that, since the exams are coming up, Sasaki-sensei issued a “No Part-Time Jobs” order.
“If you keep working, you won’t have enough time or energy to study, so no work until exams are over.”
Normally, I’d be grateful for an excuse to not work, but at a time like this? I’d rather have a part-time job! Anything’s better than studying Japanese and English…
But I guess I have no choice… Until exams are over, I’m in Hell Mode… I’ll just have to suck it up and study.
“Ughhh! Why does homework even exist in this world?!”
That night, Umika and I were studying in the living room. It was already 10 PM. Her homework showed no signs of being finished, and she had started complaining.
“That’s what you get for never studying properly.”
“But there’s just too much! It’s like Onii-chan’s stash of ero-books!”
“OI, WHAT?! I DON’T HAVE ANY OF THOSE! DON’T MAKE UP RANDOM STUFF!”
“Either way, it’s way too much! I’m gonna die here!”
She threw her pen aside and flopped onto the sofa.
“You’re only struggling because you never do your work ahead of time.”
“No, this is the system’s cruelty! I shall protest and demand the abolition of homework!”
“Do that after you finish your own homework! Overthrowing the system starts with fixing your own problems first. The world’s a lot harsher than you think.”
I sighed as I flipped through my own workbook.
“But seriously, there’s way too much! It’s like the amount of paper Onii-chan wasted!”
“OI! I DIDN’T WASTE IT!”
“I saw a whole stack of drafts in the trash! Onii-chan, you were writing a romance novel, weren’t you?”
Umika smirked like she had just won some kind of argument.
“That was just me getting rid of my childish past! And stop digging through the trash!”
“Fufufu, Onii-chan’s face is red! You totally wrote one, didn’t you?”
“SHUT UP! JUST DO YOUR HOMEWORK! I SWEAR I’M GONNA GET MAD!”
I grabbed her wrist, took a deep breath, and forced myself to stay calm.
“Hmph~, so when you can’t win with words, you use force? Classic Onii-chan.”
She pouted, but reluctantly picked up her pen again.
Not even a few minutes later, she raised her head once more.
“Hey, Nii-chan, how do I solve this problem? I have no clue.”
I glanced at her paper. It was a basic geometry question.
“You can’t even solve something this simple? This is easy—”
“WAIT!”
She suddenly raised a hand, her eyes sparkling.
“Explain it using metaphors! Preferably with anime or food! That way, I’ll remember it better!”
“…What kind of weird request is that…?”
I was exasperated, but if it helped her finish her homework, I figured I might as well try.
“Alright, fine… Look, this triangle is like a slice of pizza. This angle here is the cheese you love, and the height is the very top of a pizza tower…”
“Ooooh, This is kinda fun.”
Umika nodded as if she were taking it seriously, but then—
“So, how many sausage slices are on that pizza?”
“Huh? Umm… maybe two or three per slice… Wait a sec! We’re supposed to be studying! Not talking about food!”
“But if there’s no sausage, I’ll lose all my motivation to study!”
“HAAH?! What even… I guess… maybe three slices?”
“Ohhh! Then I’ll draw the pizza!”
“Sure, g— OI! DON’T DRAW IT! THIS IS STUDY TIME!!”
I grabbed her wrist to stop her from sketching on her scratch paper.
“Nii-chan, you’re so strict.”
Umika pouted again.
“Strict? This is for your own good. If we’re talking about strict, our older brother is way worse. If he were here, you wouldn’t be goofing off like this.”
“Sonryuu-nii-chan’s basically a dictator…”
Umika mumbled under her breath.
“Complain again, and I’ll smack you.”
“Don’t be so harsh—! You’re a dictator too, Nagisa-onii-chan!”
She dramatically clutched her head as if I were actually about to hit her.
“Then hurry up and finish.”
“Fiiine, fiiine… Sheesh, Onii-chan’s so annoying!”
Grumbling, Umika finally picked up her pen… only to pause again. She glanced at me and smirked mischievously.
“Hey, Nii-chan. I just realized something.”
“What now?”
“We totally sound like a sibling in a romance novel right now! Like, ‘My Sister’s Piling Up Homework, and She’s Clingy as Hell—What Do I Do?!’”
“…What the hell is wrong with your brain…?”
“You don’t think so??”
“LIKE HELL I DO!!”
“A slightly awkward big brother and a super cute, idol-tier little sister? It’s the perfect setup for a story!”
“SHUT UP AND DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!”
I glared at her, determined not to let her delusions run any further.
In the end, thanks to my strict supervision, Umika finally finished her homework.
She collapsed onto the sofa.
“Ughhh… finally done… I’m dead…”
And just like that, another chaotic study session came to a close.
Umika collapsed onto the sofa, letting out an exaggerated groan as if her life had just ended.
“Don’t sleep here. If you’re gonna sleep, go to your own room.”
I said, slightly exasperated, as I glanced over at her.
“Alright, alright~ But before that, I wanna drink some coffee.”
“Coffee? Alright, just wait a bit.”
With a sigh, I turned off the lights and headed to the kitchen. Umika had already flopped onto her bed, waiting for her coffee.
Now that I think about it, I bought these coffee beans a month ago.
I had planned to drink them with my older brother when he came back, but it’s already been two months, and he’s still not home. Is he busy with work? Seriously, what’s going on with him…
I have no idea. That guy never talks about himself…
Recently, while working part-time at the café, I’ve been watching Sasaki and Hiroji-san brew coffee behind the counter. Today, I figured I’d try copying their method.
Yeah! If I can’t find a job in the future, I’ll just ask Sasaki to let me work at the café! That’ll solve my unemployment problem!
I don’t wanna work right now, but once I graduate from university, I’ll have to find a job anyway. So working at a café wouldn’t be too bad.
With that in mind, I mimicked Sasaki and Hiroji-san’s technique and made two cups—one iced coffee and one iced milk coffee.
“Here you go.”
I handed Umika the milk coffee. She likes hers with milk, after all.
“Whoa~! How’d you know I wanted milk coffee? I didn’t even say anything!”
“Come on, who do you think I am? I’m your big brother! Of course, I know what you like!”
“Ooooh! As expected of Onii-chan!—Wait, no, My Brother!”
“What the heck… Is there even a difference? You just think it sounds cooler in English, don’t you?”
“Of course!”
Grinning, Umika chugged the coffee down in one go.
“Ahh~ So good! It’s super cold and refreshing!”
She looked really happy, but… Did she even take the time to taste it, drinking that fast?
I took a sip myself… Huh? The coffee’s a little stronger than usual. Maybe it’s because I copied Sasaki and Hiroji-san’s brewing method?
…Maybe I actually have a knack for making coffee.
“Alright, go to sleep. You’ve got school tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah, yeah~ Nighty-night, Brother~”
“Good night. And stop saying it in English! You know I suck at it!”
I took the empty coffee cup from Umika, stepped out of her room, and gently closed the door behind me.
Then, I went back to the kitchen, finished the rest of my coffee, and quickly washed the cups.
And with that, another day came to an end.
