Chapter 07: Mission: Escorting My Little Sister to School – My Heart is Exhausted
After everything that happened, I can finally head to school.
Seriously… So much time wasted, and now I’m about to be late! If I don’t hurry, I won’t make it in time!
“Are you ready? Did you forget anything?”
“I’m good! Everything’s set!”
Hearing Umika say that with her chest puffed out, I finally felt relieved.
I took out my bicycle, placed a cushion on the back, and let Umika hop on.
Mission start—departure!
I stepped hard on the pedals, taking off to deliver Umika to school. She wrapped her arms around my waist from behind.
“Alright, let’s go!”
“Just don’t get into another accident because of bad luck, okay?”
What the hell, is she cursing me or something?
“…Hey, could you say something a little nicer?”
“Didn’t you hit your head in that accident the other day? I’m worried about you!”
“Oh… Well, uh, thanks.”
By the way, last week’s injury from fighting some delinquents— I told Umika that I had hit my head after getting knocked over by a car.
I wasn’t riding my bike that day, and since Umika left before me, she wouldn’t know how I actually got to school. Besides, I usually park my bike in the backyard, so unless she specifically went to check, my cover story should hold up just fine.
The lie worked.
“Ehehe~ Then hurry up! We’ll be late!”
“Oi, you’re the one who took forever getting ready in the first place.”
I took a deep breath and pushed down on the pedals with all my strength, speeding toward the school.
But safety first. I was going as fast as possible while still prioritizing caution over pure speed.
“Waaah~ This feels so nice! How about you, Onii-chan?”
“Me? If you wanna know the truth… You might be having fun, but I’m suffering!”
The cool breeze brushed against my cheeks. Normally, this would feel refreshing, but while Umika was enjoying herself, I was just focused on getting her to school on time.
I had no choice but to pick up the pace, shortening the travel time but draining my stamina in the process. This wasn’t relaxing at all!
If only she’d gotten ready a little faster, I could’ve taken it easy and enjoyed the morning air myself…
Oh well. Nothing to do but keep moving.
“Alright! We finally made it! I’m hopping off!”
Pedaling a bit faster than usual, I managed to get to school with ten minutes to spare before class started.
Like a little kid, Umika jumped off the bike and ran straight into the school without even looking back.
But the moment she stepped inside, she suddenly turned around and shouted.
“Onii-chan! Mission ‘Escort Umika to School’ is complete! As your reward, here’s a flying kiss! This is a special kiss from a popular idol, you know!”
Then she actually blew me a kiss.
…What the hell? That’s just gross.
And why would she suddenly say something that weird? Does she have no sense of shame?
“Yeah, yeah, just hurry up and go already…”
Phew… Finally done.
With a sigh, I pulled out my phone to check the time. Seeing that I still had a bit before class, I decided to take it slow.
Just then, my phone buzzed— a message from Umika.
“Onii-chan! I might be home late tonight, so don’t worry about dinner, okay? My birthday’s this weekend, but since my friends are busy then, they’re throwing me a party tonight!”
Oh, right. Her birthday is coming up. I still haven’t gotten her a present.
“Got it. Don’t stay out too late.”
After sending my reply, I hopped back onto my bike and rode off.
Since I had time before class, I figured I’d take care of Umika’s birthday present first.
She likes skirts, so I stopped by a nearby clothing store and picked out a white one-piece dress as her gift.
I don’t know if she’ll like it, but if she doesn’t, I’ll just get her something else.
Alright, time to head to school.
