ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
It seemed the physical education teacher for class 1 and class 2 had come down with the flu. We had a special announcement about it during the morning assembly. At first, I was confused. I didn’t understand why we, the students from class 3, needed to hear about that too. However, it turned out today we would have a joint class with class 1 and class 2 too. Usually we had joint class with class 4.
Furthermore, usually boys and girls had different activities to do. But today, both genders would be playing soccer on the field.
The physical education class was starting. I stepped onto the field and sure enough, there were more students than usual.
Among them, there was Kiho. She was standing in the corner of the field, looking idle as she waited for the class to start.
Indeed, she seemed to be ignored by her classmates. No one approached to talk with her. The girls were gathered in small groups, slightly away from Kiho. They were talking amicably with each other, leaving Kiho behind.
Feeling increasingly uncomfortable at the sight, I was about to go talk to her when suddenly, Kiho looked my way. Our eyes met. She made a stern face and shook her head slightly, seemingly trying to tell me to stay away from her.
Come to think of it, she had told me to not approach her in public.
Gingerly, I nodded back and turned my feet in the opposite direction.
“Ah.”
Just as I stepped onto the field, I saw Nanami. Hiwatari wasn’t with her. She was walking toward my direction accompanied by two girls. They must be her friends.
Upon noticing me, she raised her hand.
“Ah! Kan-chan!”
Nanami said something to her friends before she walked over to where I was.
“Ah, right. We’re having our physical education class together with class 3 and 4. That’s why Kan-chan is here too.”
“Why…”
“Hm?”
“Why are you wearing gym clothes?”
I asked bluntly, causing Nanami to look puzzled.
“Huh? Why? Because it’s a physical education class?”
“Are you going to participate in the class?”
“Yes. I feel fine today.”
Nanami said as a matter of factly.
“I told you….”
My frown grew even deeper as I continued.
“I already told you to just sit it out. You may feel fine right now but you might get worse after exercising.”
“No. I want to participate.”
Nanami retorted decisively, as if she wanted me to drop the subject already. Her tone reminded me of a stubborn child throwing a tantrum.
“It’s not whether you want to or not…”
Irritated, I scratched my head briskly.
“You need to learn how to take care of your own body for once. Just how many times have you gotten sick because of this?”
I added.
“I don’t care.”
“Huh?”
“I don’t care if my health is going to get worse. I still want to participate in the class.”
I looked at Nanami’s face and contrary to my expectation, she had a very resolute expression on her face.
For a moment, I felt like choking. The defiance was clear to see in her expression.
“….Huh?”
The voice that came out of my tightened throat sounded so cold. I was surprised at how cold I sounded.
“What are you talking about? You’re not making any sense. Pushing yourself to participate in physical education class when you’re not feeling well is foolish.”
“It’s okay even if it’s foolish. That’s right. I am a fool.”
“Nanami.”
The way Nanami sulked at me made something boiling deep inside my gut. She turned her heel on me, intent to leave me. My hand subconsciously reached out to her shoulder and…
“Isn’t it fine?”
A voice came from behind. A male voice that I wasn’t familiar with.
“She says she wants to do it anyway.”
I turned around and there, I saw Hiwatari standing there. His timing was impeccable, like a hero coming to rescue a bullied heroine.
“Just let her do it. It seems she’s really feeling fine today.”
Hiwatari said with a slightly troubled smile, like he was trying to stop a bunch of children from fighting.
Ah, I knew it. His calm voice only fueled the heat in my gut even more.
This guy was the type to say something saccharine sweet like this. Even though he didn’t know anything… No, he was able to act like this because he didn’t know anything.
I was about to talk back but then, a voice came from the field, interrupting me. It was the teacher’s voice, calling us to gather around.
“Ah, class is starting.”
Feeling relieved, Nanami glanced at the field.
“Let’s go.”
Nanami said before she quickly walked away from me. Of course, she was going toward the field.
Seeing how stubborn she was made me furrow my eyebrows even more, but at the same time… I also felt a bit relieved. Had I continued speaking, I couldn’t even imagine what I would have said to Hiwatari.

T/N: Dem. No wonder Nanami confessed to Hiwatari.
