I have become Legion - 2 - Holy Embers
I am jolted awake by the pain coursing through my body.
My heart beats with vigor and I feel adrenaline coursing through my body. I look around and see a cold and stony morgue. I slowly calm down, and the numbed pain returns. Gritting my teeth, I get up from the cold stone and feel how weak my body is. I can barely walk. It’s more like I’m a shambling zombie than a living person.
[Transmigration Complete]
A blue window appears before me.
“What are you?”
I ask the air. It does not respond.
Waving the window away, I look for a weapon, and I see a bloody knife.
‘It will do’
Then I climb the stairs out of the morgue, and I find myself in a village of some kind. No, rather I recognize this village. There’s a broken statue in the center. This is a minor village near the misty forest, and the reason I remember it. It was the starting location for my new character.
‘Status’
I thought out, and before me, a blue screen appeared.

Everything is as it is supposed to be, with the only difference being a new trait called Pain Conquest, and my increased willpower stat. Pain Conquest is an acquirable trait that has the simple condition of increasing willpower by 15 or more within 7 days. Even with my blood boiling, the pain isn’t too extreme. That’s because Pain Conquest is one of the greatest pain resistance traits in Quest.
“Huuh”
I take a deep breath. Even though I can stand the pain, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I really, really want to cry, but I can’t. If this is really the world of Quest, then I need to act fast. The world is headed for doom, and I am the only one who can save it.
First, I need to rationally think about my situation. While this build should be theoretically the strongest, I have to use it myself. My stats suck ass, and I have a lot of curses.
Out of the curses I currently have, some of them are going to be really annoying. Death Curse subtly twists fate to bring danger closer to me, and while I was planning to use this as a long-term experience farm. Now I wouldn’t be able to use it, for many reasons, but most important is that if others were close to me, they might get killed by those dangers. It’s quite easy to dispel though, its dispel condition is Death. Death is meaningless for me thanks to my Legion trait. Now I currently don’t have the means to kill myself, so I will need to find something that can, and right next to me is the misty forest. Which has all kinds of monsters in it.
I take steps into the forest.
This should be on ‘Hell mode’, right? If so, I wonder what kind of monster will appear. The difficulty settings so far have just increased enemy levels, mostly.
And of the other curses, Lucks Despised and Demon’s Curse are also very annoying. [Lucks Despised] means that I’m unlucky, yeah simple as that. If something bad can happen to me, then it will. Chekhov’s Gun is shot in the first act, right at me. While Demon’s Curse is more aptly named ‘Demon Hunting Mark’, it basically marks me as the target of the Demon’s hunting sport. They will be able to instantly recognize me, and will gain a reward for hunting me.
I fall to the ground.
[Your health has reached 0]
[You have di…]
[Legion activates – You cannot die]
The pain increases as I feel my body is already dead, but death is not allowed for me. I barely get up from the ground. My breathing is ragged. The pain is again softened as I feel my willpower increase by a point.
“Huuh, at least there’s that”
‘This can’t really get any worse, can it?’
I think to myself, and then it begins to rain.
“Fuck!”
I shout out, but with little strength. I feel really fucking hungry, of course I do. With a strength stat of 1, I’m trying to do heavy exercise, and on top of that I have the curse of Hunger. I forcefully take a step forward and continue my thoughts.
Magic Inability isn’t that bad as the core of my build doesn’t rely on magic, but I should still get rid of it. Excommunication similar to Magic Inability isn’t that bad on its own, but the moment a priest realises that I’m outside God’s Grace…
‘Well, that will be a shit show, won’t it?’
While I can deal with the lower clergy, if the Warrior-Pope somehow hears that there’s an immortal who’s outside God’s Grace, he’d probably throw a big fit. So this is absolutely something I have to deal with. Thankfully, there’s a quick cure for it. Just kill a high-ranking demon. Just in luck, or more like it was already planned, there’s a high-ranking demon guarding a treasure horde in the misty forest.
Now Pain Echo and Shadow Parasite as curses are actually fun. Pain Echo is a good way to gain experience for the Pain Conquest trait and!
An intense pain surges from my right shoulder as a massive grey wolf bites down on it. Before I can react to it properly, the Grey wolf bit my neck as well, and well, I died, didn’t I?
[You have instantly Died]
[Legion Activates – Your body is forcefully restored]
With a burst of power, the grey wolf is flung from me, and I feel almost fine. Well, my curses are still there, but looking at my status.
Health: 10 / 10
Stamina: 10 / 10
I’m back to full health, my willpower is now 19, and the Death Curse got removed.
I look towards the Grey Wolf, a quite simple thought goes through my head.
‘Fuck’
I have no way of defeating a level 30 boss. Why the hell is it in the misty forest, anyway. This was a level 15 area on Hard mode.
It seems I have no choice. The Grey Wolf pounces towards me, this time more vigilant. And I, well, I also rush towards it. Just because I don’t have a method to win doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try. The Grey Wolf bites down on my left shoulder, but with the knife I picked up before I stab it in the side, well, I wish that had happened, but the blade just bounces off.
[Your health has reached 0]
[You have di…]
[Legion activates – You cannot die]
Constantly beating the wolf with the knife, while most attacks don’t deal any damage, some are critical hits dealing at least 1 damage. After around 10 minutes of the wolf eating parts of me, and me stabbing it frantically, the wolf backs away. I bet I look like an absolute mess. My left arm is completely torn off, my head is barely dangling to my body, and there’re bites taken from everywhere around my body.
The wolf takes some steps away, but I take equal steps forward.
[You have made the Grey Wolf afraid]
[The Grey Wolf has developed a fear of the undead]
And well, the Grey Wolf runs away. I can’t really follow it, nor would I want to. I can feel my body quickly regenerating, my head is put back to place, my left arm is restored, and all the injuries disappear before a minute has even passed. I am basically fine.
Well, not exactly fine. I can feel my heart beating extremely loudly. Yeah, well, that was fucking terrifying. I was so afraid that it would turn me into a permanent snack. Its teeth were so sharp, and the pain… I really underestimated Pain Echo. Even though I was forcing myself to stab the Grey Wolf, it still hurt like hell.
There are tears in my eyes.
“Fuck, I can’t break yet.”
Yeah.. I can’t break down yet. I have to save this world, no matter what.
“But why the fuck?”
Why should I save a world that isn’t my own?
Because I had to, I just had to…
Can’t I just go find a place that the Calamities won’t destroy. I’m pretty sure there’s a place like that somewhere.
But I can’t. I need to save the world.
“But why, you idiot?!”
I shout out at myself. I don’t understand it myself. It’s like an absolute command set by me. I will save the world, I will protect all those NPCs I care about, and I’ll be the greatest hero there ever is. All the Calamities will be cleared without a single flaw. Fuck 50% save rate, I’m going to save everyone!
===
I absolutely must get rid of Pain Echo. It has a much worse effect on my psyche than I thought.
‘Huuh’
After my outburst, I’ve managed to calm down, and I continue walking through the misty forest.
The Misty Forest is a special forest defended by a tribe of elven druids. Originally, there was only one way to navigate it. It was to have the blessing of the elves, but thanks to some absolute madlads, we managed to figure out another way. Yeah, simply put, you just need to count specific trees and then you can bypass all the space distortion magic. We made this entire complicated web way, and we found out that the Misty Forest is actually an awesome shortcut for a lot of areas.
But for some reason, I feel like I’m being watched.
Could it be?
I look over to my shadow and see it smiling at me. It’s called a Shadow Parasite. A really annoying curse if you don’t deal with it. Simply put, it will slowly cause your characters to go insane, it thrives on the negative emotions of its host. For now, it’s not doing anything as my mental state is already so broken, but once I start to show signs of repair, this bastard will surely start doing all kinds of stuff. There’s two ways to deal with it. Since it’s a curse, you can obviously just burn it away. But the other one is just simply better. You can tame it.
Simply put, the Shadow Parasite is a massive coward, and to tame it, you just need two things. First, you need to show it that you can remove curses, and second, you need to show it that you’re stronger than it. This is related to its removal process, basically when it gets removed, it will turn into a Shadow Demon and attack its original host, but now if it knows that you can remove it, and defeat it. Well then, this coward is going to try its best to not get killed like that.
Once I get to the inquisitors’ hideout, I can show it the first condition, the ability to remove curses, through fire. The other one is already planned for, since to enter the Academy I need a lot of money, so…
“Let’s steal it from a Demon.”
The 72 Demons act as bosses you can encounter if you do the open world parts of the game. Most of them are acting individually and doing their own schemes. They were sent out as scouts, but since all of them are demon nobility, some are not really doing their job. A quite simple way to explain it is that the lower ones are doing big things as they want recognition, but the higher ranks are doing less than they already believe they have won the war. Even after getting repelled in the past, they still think that the world will not have a savior. Just because there’s no Hero doesn’t mean that they can trample over everyone.
62nd of the Demons – President Valac. Treasure finder, he’s acting like a dragon hoarding all kinds of treasures stolen from humans. A lot of them are from the big incident in the south where many demons worked together to bring down an empire. Thankfully, he’s stayed quiet after that, meaning I get to rob him of all his treasures.
“18th purple tree. Now from here I need to go towards the moon.”
Initially, we just counted our steps and followed the celestial bodies, but later we realised that we could just count the purple trees since they’d act as good markers, well I can’t tell that they’re purple because of [Grey World], but they have a different form from the other trees, they’re much shorter. After walking for a while longer, I made it to the inquisition hideout. It’s empty for almost the entire year, but I should still be careful. I haven’t yet figured out what date it is.
Walking quietly, I peer in to the small wooden cottage through the windows, and find no one inside.
‘Did I get lucky?’
No.
There’s no way I can get lucky.
‘I have the [Lucks Despised] curse, there’s no way the world will give me a break.’
I look behind me, trying to find anything, but there’s nothing. Yeah, really nothing. No matter how much I look, I can’t find anything.
Whatever, even if somebody does show up, I can probably talk to them. I’m just here for the Holy Embers. I enter into the wooden cottage and instantly go to the location of the Holy Embers, exactly according to my memory. Four holy embers. I take them with me and return outside. For some reason, I still have a feeling that something is watching me, but that’s not something I can confirm.
I take off my clothes and sit down on the ground in a lotus position. Setting one of the holy embers between my legs.
So out of the curses I have, [Lucks Despised] and [Pain Echo] are absolutely required to get removed. After that I don’t think it would be good to be hated so [Stigmata] needs to be removed. Final one that I want to remove is [Boiling Blood], simple reason, I don’t think I’ll be able to fall asleep with the constant pain. Of course the pain isn’t that bad anymore due to [Pain Conquest], but I suffer from insomnia already.
“Now, how do I use this?”
Right, I don’t actually know how to use holy embers now that it’s real.
“Channel your mana, soul, divine power, or life force into the embers and think of the curse you wish to get rid of. It will set your body ablaze and the curse will be cleansed.”
A stern voice behind me speaks, but I don’t turn back. I was quite certain that somebody was watching me already.
“Thanks.”
I say calmly, and then I focus on the embers.
‘Life force is probably it.’
Out of the 4 forces that the man described, I think due to [Legion], life force is the one that is most likely to work. Closing my eyes, I focus on all my internal senses. I can feel the calm beat of my heart, the boiling blood in my body, and my muscles aching, the hunger that weakens me, the curses floating around my body, the mana trapped in stasis, the empty shell where divine power would fill, and the soul cut in two parts, barely functioning. I move all of it, focusing on the holy embers. I focus my mind on a single word.
‘Pain Echo, Pain Echo Pain Echo’
And then, with a spark, I feel my body beginning to burn. I instantly open my eyes from the pain. Even with [Pain Conquest] it’s overwhelming.
“AHahaah!”
Falling out of the pose, I try to grasp the ground, my entire body is set ablaze. I can’t think of anything.
AaAAAaa!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
[Pain Conquest has leveled up]
AAAAAA!
AAaaaa…
“Aaaa…”
Fuck.
“It hurt like hell.”
I’m not sure how long it took, but my mind is completely drained, but well, I can’t stop here. I have to deal with the other curses, but well, at least I got the worst one out of the way. Now the other ones should hurt less.
“Yes, Holy Embers hurt a lot. They’re only used when there’s no other option.”
The stern voice behind me speaks again.
“How long did it take?”
I ask, still not turning to it.
“Around 20 minutes. That’s one hell of a curse.”
I sit back down in the lotus pose and take another holy ember to my lap.
“Yeah.”
I say, while focusing back on my life force.
“You’re going to do it again!?”
The voice behind me is surprised, but I don’t have time for that. I plan to deal with all four of the incredibly bad curses, and I don’t want this guy to stop me midway.
‘Lucks Despised, Lucks Despised, Lucks Despised’
===
“So, who might you be?”
I ask the strange boy from the forest.
“Name? I don’t really wanna get known by the religious people, yet.”
A frown forms on my face at hearing those words. Does this boy have bad blood with a church?
‘Huuh’
I take a deep breath. This strange boy seems to navigate the misty forest. He has the mental resilience to not only use the holy embers, but use them multiple times in a row. I don’t think I could do it even twice in a row. I had used one before and I still do not want to remember it. Finally, I have a feeling this boy knows something.
On his back used to be a large stigmata, one so large that I had never seen one like that before. I’ve seen all kinds of branding, but even the highest crime ordained directly by the Warrior-Pope wouldn’t result in such a stigmata.
‘Demon’
That is the only thing that comes to mind. This boy did something extraordinary. He caused significant damage to a demon, was cursed multiple times, and somehow escaped. Because of those reasons, I would rather be friendly with the boy.
“It is fine.”
I speak and then continue.
“But I’d like at least an alias.”
The boy stands up and turns to me.
‘It is strange.’
My body still has burn scars from burning a curse, but this boy who burned four curses of a high grade somehow does not have a single burn scar.
“I’m gonna go kill a demon. Isn’t that enough Holy Knight Aaron?”
The boy speaks with nonchalance.
