Chapter 59: The Start of Slaughter

“Oooh…! Kaltz-sama! Welcome! Welcome!”

“….”

On the night before the designated day that Kai had warned him, Kaltz arrived at the church in a hurry. Seeing Kaltz, a look of relief flashed on the Pope’s face. After all, for the Pope, who hardly received any support from the royal family, Kaltz was basically his savior.

Kaltz’s voice was firm. It was clear to see that he wouldn’t accept any excuses. The Pope flinched. Kaltz had come to know about this fact just yesterday, on the day he had promised to go diving into a dungeon with Alwyn and Brien. For some reason, Alwyn didn’t show up that day and when Kaltz went back to the nearby town to investigate, he saw the news. Demons suddenly attacked the church. Shortly after that, one of the Crusaders staying in that town handed Kaltz a letter from the Pope. The church urgently requested for his presence. The letter warned that the demons might be coming again. 

“Your Holiness? You heard my question, didn’t you?”

“Tha-That’s…!!”

The Pope stammered. Seeing that, Kaltz furrowed his eyebrows and clenched his fists tightly. Actually, he wanted to bring Brien along, but upon learning all the nefarious deeds the church had done, Brien only shook her face. Her face was full of disgust at the church. 

“I get it. I understand your feelings, but defeating the demons takes precedence! Someone belonging to a hero party like you should be able to know what to prioritize!”

No matter how hard Kaltz tried to persuade her, Brien refused to budge. Above everything else…

“Listen to yourself! Are you out of your mind?! Who’s the demon here?! The ones who dare to do such wicked things are the real demons! Despite knowing that, you still want to help those bastards?! You dare to call yourself a hero?! Is that what a hero is to you?!”

Brien’s words pierced Kaltz’s mind like sharp needles. Kaltz tried to retort, but he was at a loss for words. After all, Kaltz understood Brien’s point…. Cornered, the Pope’s face twisted into frustration as he forced out an apology from his mouth. Understanding the meaning behind the Pope’s words, Kaltz’s eyes widened in shock. 

“It is true that I’ve committed grave sins. I have no words to justify them! But!!! Right now, the most important thing to do is defeating those demons! A-After all, the empire is going to get destroyed if we let the demons run amok!”

“…”

“Kaltz-sama, you’re the chosen one! The hero who will save this country! Please eradicate the demons with your holy sword!!”

Who’s the demon here?! The ones who dare to do such wicked things are the real demons!

Brien’s words echoed in his mind again, causing Kaltz to frown. Seeing the change of expression as a threat to his plan, the Pope stammered again. 

“Ah…. I….I…”

“…I understand.”

However, Kaltz only nodded. Right now, defeating the demons was his top priority. 

“I will help. However, after everything is over, you must properly pay for your crime according to the law.”

“O-O-O-O-Of course!! Thank you!!”

The Pope bowed his head repeatedly in quick succession. All the dignity and regality he once had were all gone. For the Pope, it didn’t matter whether he’d receive punishment for real or not. Saving his life was more important than that. 

After leaving the Pope’s office, Kaltz sighed. 

“…Shit.”

No matter how stubborn he was, Kaltz knew imprisoning innocent women and abusing them sexually was not right. If the perpetrator had been an ordinary person, Kaltz would’ve immediately brandished his sword as the advocate of justice. However, the perpetrator was the Pope. The Pope was his  benefactor and a key figure for this country. Kaltz decided that he would turn a blind eye on the Pope’s crime for now. All for the future of the nation. Sacrificing the small for the greater good, so to say. 

And above all… Kaltz was burning with desire to take his revenge against the demons.

“I will kill him… This time, I will kill him for sure!!’

Clenching his teeth, Keltz stepped into the church’s courtyard. In a place where Kai had killed dozens of Crusaders two days ago, many Crusaders that the Pope had summoned from other regions were preparing some kind of spell. That boy had to be killed here. A demon that dared to appear in the middle of the capital was far too dangerous to let free. Furthermore… Kaltz knew he wouldn’t be at peace until he had his revenge.

Of course, a very small part of him was still worrying about Alwyn, but that small part was greatly overwhelmed by his inferiority complex. Brien refused to help him. Alwyn was kidnapped. He was literally alone now.

One of the Crusaders who had been drawing a magic circle in front of him suddenly collapsed. Chaos erupted. Blood spurted out from the Crusaders. Everyone present froze in spot, unable to know where the attack had come from. 

“I-It’s the demon! Quick! Activate your magic vision!”

“Get in the formation!! Stay calm!! This is the day we’ve been waiting for! Thousands of our allies will arrive soon! We just need to hold out until the- Argh….”

“U-UWAHHHH?!?!”

The man, who appeared to be the leader of the squadron, suddenly had his head severed. The surrounding soldiers immediately let out pathetic cry. Of course. Of course they didn’t know where the enemy was. Of course they couldn’t see the attack coming. Of course they didn’t realize they had been attacked until it was too late. Not until their comrade’s head had flown off. 

They didn’t know that this was possible due to the effect of an artifact that Chloe had. 

“Ge-Get in the formation!! Magic units! Start preparing the magic spell! The time is nigh!!”

And then, he appeared. From within the dense foliage inside the church, the boy emerged, wearing a very confident smile on his face. His left eye glowed red. 

Kaltz widened his eyes. He immediately drew his holy sword out and shouted at the top of his lungs.

“DEMON!!!”

The boy only scanned his surroundings calmly and took out a pocket watch from his pocket. 

“Alright. It’s past midnight now.”

Kai then took a deep breath before he tilted his head to the side.

“Each and everyone of you… None of you will make it out alive.”

So began the start of slaughter.
