Chapter 55: Necessary Slaughter

“To-To the warehouse! Demons have appeared in the basement!!”

The person hitting the bell started hitting more frantically with each passing seconds and the Crusaders in the dormitory quickly changed into their combat gear and armed themselves. Every single one of them was a scumbag who had defiled innocent women. However, their loyalty to the Pope ran deep. After all, the Pope was their benefactor that provided them with this carnal indulgences. Not to mention, the deep rooted hatred for demons that had been instilled in every citizen of the empire. All of it fueled their determination to prepare for battle quickly. In no time, dozens of Crusaders gathered at the warehouse entrance, forming a battle formation.

“Tch…”

Chloe, watching the scene unfolding from the bushes behind the warehouse, clicked her tongue and looked at Alwyn, who was still lying motionless in her arms. Though blindfolded, tears marks had appeared down her cheeks. Her body was listless, like a puppet with its strings cut, but then, Alwyn suddenly spoke softly. 

“…Chloe-san.”

“What is it, Alwyn?”

“Do you think those people also have been to that place earlier?”

“…”

Thanks to the boisterous noise from the men outside, Alwyn was quick to understand the situation. However, her words were devoid of strength. All that could be felt from her words were abyssal despair. Chloe could only frown and remained silent. Of course, given Alwyn’s current state, anything Chloe said wouldn’t be helpful in any way. 

For now, I need to focus on getting out here alive with Alwyn. 

Chloe thought to herself when she heard a man’s voice coming from the basement stairs. 

“Ple-Please save me..!! Spare my life!! Please!!!”

It was the Pope. The moment Chloe realized this fact, she quickly covered Alwyn’s ears, but Alwyn had already heard it. The tear marks on her cheeks thickened. The area around her eyes under the blindfold grew damper from tears. Tension spared across the faces of the Crusaders waiting in front of the warehouse, followed by a prolonged silence that seemed eerily calm.

Then, after what felt like an eternity..

“Collapse.”

A thunderous roar, beyond anyone’s wildest imagination, echoed across the whole area. A tangible black shockwave was released from the warehouse’s main gate. The men standing directly in its path were obliterated in an instant by this laser-like magic. 

“U-UAGHHHH!!”

“Qu-Quick! Get in position!”

“Magic unit, prepare the spell! Close-combat unit, charge and buy the magic unit some time!”

“Our enemy is a demon! Enhance your holy power to its maximum!!”

True to their training, the Crusaders quickly reformed their ranks and prepared for a full-scale battle. The magic unit in the rear started chanting, ready to unleash the greatest holy magic they had developed specifically for a time like this. However…

“Die, demon… UARGHHH?!”

“A-Above!! Above us!!”

Suddenly, Kai appeared in the sky to unleash a black sphere made from pure magic power. It was a surprise attack by making use of Chloe’s skill, Dark Sight. The massive sphere exploded, sending several Crusaders flying. 

“Shit! What the…! Protect the magic unit! They’re our only chance at winning against the demons!!”

Like I will let you. 

Kai’s left red eye gleamed as he channeled his magic into the sword he had acquired from the dungeon. Flames suddenly erupted along the blade and he mowed down the Crusaders, cutting them down. Kai’s body was still growing. His physical strength was still in training. However, the overwhelming magic power within him made up for the lack of physical strength. Kai could feel it all. Now that his body was enhanced with magic, he could feel the sensation of cutting through someone’s flesh, the screams, the splattering blood.

This was the kind of stimulation that felt too vivid, too raw for a reincarnator, let lone an ordinary person like Kai. However, upon remembering the scene that he witnessed in the basement, this all seemed like a small price to pay for the men’s sin. The women who had been violated in the underground were already dead inside. Whether it was due to drugs or from the sheer brutality that they had to endure, the mind of all the women trapped in the basement had crumpled to dust. Some would burst into tears all of a sudden, some were lying there, listless and half-unconscious.

“Ki-Kill him!! Kill the demons and protect our country!!”

“Who’s the real demon here?! You guys are the real demons!!”

With his sword in hand, Kai cleaved the men’s body in half. He flew in from behind and stabbed through the abdomen of an attacker that tried to rush to him and hit the other three men with magic. 

His breath became labored. He could feel his sanity chipped away after witnessing too many twisted scenes. After all, Kai’s mind hadn’t become numb enough to accept the bloodshed and the cruelty of this world. And yet, Kai gripped his sword tightly and swung it down. He swung his sword like a true demon, closing in on the magic unit at the rear, who was about to cast the holy magic they had prepared. 

Disgusting. The fact that the holy magic still resides within their bodies even after all those cruel things they’ve done to those poor women… Absolutely revolting. A shitty country like this deserves to perish.

“Nia!!”

Kai shouted loudly and Nia, who had been providing support from behind, changed the expression on her face. Her red eyes gleamed in the dark and at the same time, the eyes of the evil spirit looming behind her also started to shine. Kai took a few steps back to stand beside Nia and..

“Amaurot.”

The evil spirit slammed its fist down to the ground. The impact spread, like an earthquake. The crushed men were splattered instantly and the magic unit trembled in fear before the sight of pure evil right in front of them. Their bodies turned limp.

Kai placed his blood-stained hand on Nia’s shoulder. The evil spirit grew larger and its red eyes gleaming as it looked down upon the Crusaders. 

They couldn’t win.

They couldn’t possibly win. There was no way they could win against this. The men instinctively sensed it. They immediately screamed as they tried to flee. However, of course neither Kai nor Nia would let them escape. 

“Dark Pierce.”

“Kuho…?! Arghh….Argh…”

“UWAGHHHH!!”

Nia crossed her hands and conjured dozens of black spears. The spears pierced through the escaping men. Rains of spears poured down and the men fell down one by one. 

Soon enough, silence fell over the square. All that remained were dozens of corpses and dozens of black spears, sharp like needles. Nia uncrossed her hand and looked up at Kai.

“…That’s the end. I don’t sense any other human presence here.”

“Probably, yeah. The other must have escaped.”

Kai looked around while licking his dry lips. The scene of blood and scattered corpses was not a pleasant sight by any means. It didn’t feel right, nor did it feel just. However, for some people, this was a necessary sight. A necessary slaughter for some people who had been exploited by the church until their very bones, destroyed both physically and mentally.

“Let’s destroy that too, Nia.”

“Okay.”

Kai headed toward the Crusader’s dormitory. This dormitory looked like the one from the school in his past life. This dormitory was located quite close to the warehouse. 

Most probably, after the Crusaders had finished their daily routine, they would nonchalantly walk to the basement to commit heinous crimes against those innocent women. 

Shiver ran down his spine. He looked at the dormitory with disgust. Nia then crossed her arms again and exhaled deeply. A wide AOE attack that Nia, who was the final boss of a game in his previous life, often used.

The fist of the evil spirit swung down the dormitory. Vibrations close to the earthquake spread across the area. The evil spirit easily crushed the building that symbolizes the glamor of the church.

Kai and Nia turned around and walked back to the warehouse. It didn’t take long before they saw the Pope trembling in nothing but his underwear inside the warehouse. What a pathetic sight to behold. 

“Now then, what should I do with you, Pope?”

Kai wouldn’t let him die that easily. 

Kai looked down at the Pope with a chillingly cold expression.
