Chapter 49: The Dark Side of the Church

“A-ARGHHHH!!”

Red eyes were the symbol of the demons. That was the truth universally acknowledged in this world. As the Crusaders witnessed the demon in prophecy, they immediately screamed in terror. One even tried to run away. However, of course Nia wouldn’t let him be.

“One.”

The dark red aura surrounding Nia soon took the shape of a gigantic hand. The gigantic hand stretched out straight to the running man. The man was grabbed easily. Witnessing the magic that seemed to come from another dimension, all of the Crusaders turned pale. 

“YO-YOU DAMN DEMON!!! FILTHY HERETICS-!!――A-Argh….!”

However, the man couldn’t even finish his word. Nia clenched her fist and at the same time, the gigantic red hand also mirrored Nia’s movement, crushing the man’s body. It was definitely not a sight for the faint-hearted. Blood was oozing from every orifice of his body. I shielded Rielle’s eyes with my arm and covered her ears with my hand to prevent her from seeing the horror unfolding. 

Meanwhile, the other men who witnessed their comrade’s gruesome death immediately went into full blown panic. 

“Wha-Wha-…?”!

“Darn  it…! If it’s like this then…!!”

Everyone here knew. There was no escape. They had 0 chance of survival unless they could somehow kill the demon. 

Fueled with desperation, one of the Crusader charged at Nia with his sword. However, he was far too slow. 

“Die!! You demon-…. Kya-…. Kihahahahahahaha!! KIAHAHHAA-?!”

“Wha-? WHAAAA?!?!”

The charging Crusader fell for Nia’s mind control. Driven by madness, the man stabbed his own head and at the same time, Chloe stabbed her knife into another Crusader’s chest. The swift assassin closed the distance in an instant in the midst of the panic. Both man collapsed on the ground in an instant. 

Now, only two Crusaders remained. The other two knew. This… This was Shadow. 

“Can you please take Rielle to a safe place?”

“Ye-Yes…!”

“Wait, Kai…?! What’s happening?! Don’t tell me, the Crusaders are…”

“Yeah. We’re killing them.”

“….”

“We’re killing them because there’s no need to keep them alive. Don’t worry. I will make sure you won’t receive any repercussions from this.”

I released Rielle from my embrace and she looked up at me silently, speechless. Her face was full of confusion and disbelief. Her reaction wasn’t unexpected though. Even though she knew we were demons, but she had never actually seen us kill anyone or commit any evil deeds. Though from my perspective, given the insanity of this world, I wouldn’t even call what we were doing ‘evil deeds’. But yeah, Rielle’s reaction was understandable. At the end of the day, we were murderers. We killed people. 

“….Kai.”

“….If you think what we’re doing is inhumane and you start to despise us, that’s fine. We can forget about the mutual contract we have. I’m sorry, Rielle.”

Another knife from Chloe pierced one of the Crusaders in the head, followed by dozens of black spears impaling his body from Nia. The spears came with impeccable timing, as if Nia had been waiting for the opportunity. 

The last remaining man fell to the ground, shaking violently. 

“Both of you! Keep that one alive for now! I have some questions for him!”

Rielle was still looking up at me, confusion still clearly etched on her face. But unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to comfort her any further. 

“Kai, wait a mome-“

‘Sorry, but I will need to kill that guy too later.”

I wasn’t a hero. I didn’t have any intention to become one nor did I wish to become the savior of this nation. I didn’t act based on unwavering faith or because of some stupid ideology. I only wanted to kill these disgusting people for my own satisfaction.

“Hi-Hi-Hi-Hiiiiiiii…!!”

Walking past the two dead Crusaders, I approached the only man remaining. He immediately looked up to see me. Fear was clearly ingrained on his face. In fact, it seemed he had wet himself out of fear.

“Shall we play a game? I will ask you a question and if you don’t answer within 3 seconds, you will lose a finger.”

“The-The fu-?!”

“Now then, first question.”

I could always use mind control on him to make him spill everything. However, that method wouldn’t satisfy me. These men came here to kill Rielle and slaughter the other people in this mansion. For a bunch of lunatic cult worshippers like them, torture seemed to be the best option. 

“Here’s your first question. Was it the Pope that sent you here? Alright, 3…2…1…”

“You filthy demon, how dare you speak of the Pope so ligh- ARGHHH!!”

A small knife that I conjured using black magic cut the man’s pinky finger off. His decapitated finger then fell onto the ground with a thud.

“Three… Two… One…”

“Sto-Stop it! You bastard…! UWAGHHHHH!!!”

“ST-STOP!!! I BEG OF YOU!! I WILL- I WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING!!!”

“….I will count to three again. Honestly. You only need to answer my question. Isn’t that easy?”

“Ye-Yes…! I-I understand!”

The man must be scared shitless since his face was a mess from all the tears and snot. I raised my hand and put three fingers up. 

“First Question. Did the Pope send you here?”

“Tha-That’s right! His Holiness ordered us- ARGHHHH!!”‘

“Answer politely.”

“Uugh…. Ye-Yes….”

“You still have 16 fingers to go through. Well, second question.”

“Ye-Yes!”

“What does the Pope want? Why did he send you guys here?”

The man looked bewildered for a moment before he suddenly shook his head frantically. 

“I-I don’t know! We were just ordered to… ARGHHH!!!”

“Three… Two… One…”

“The Power Elixir!!! We were ordered to find the recipe for the Power Elixir!!”

“Anything else? Did he say anything about Rielle?!”

“He didn’t give us any specific orders regarding here!! But, he gave us the order to find any evidence that can be used to bring the Raudi Trading Company down…!!”

“Hmm… I see.”

Finally decided to be obedient, the man spilled everything truthfully. His arrogance from being affiliated with the church, his loyalty to the church, everything had disappeared. All that was left was his instinct for survival.

Smiling faintly, I recalled the details of the game that I had played in my previous life. 

“Now then, my next question. I know the church is keeping some girls in the basement. But, where are those girls being keep? In which church?”

Of course, there weren’t any rumors like that circulating within the empire. I simply made an educated guess based on the contents of the side quest in the game. And lo and behold. My guess was right. To think those guys who kept flaunting their holiness for serving God would… Pfft.

“I’m not even shocked anymore. I’m actually amused. The guys that proclaimed to serve God would… Hahahahahaha!! Uwahh~~~ Hahahaha!! I can’t stop laughing for real…”

“I guess the next thing we need to do is hear the Pope’s confession… Thank you, scum.”

 Forming several spears made from black magic, I thrusted the spears right into his limbs. Then, I cast mind magic to make him have a taste of eternal pain. The man’s body contorted in an unnatural way, like he was having a spasm. However, this was his end. Even if I didn’t cast mind manipulation magic on him, the guy already lost so much blood. He wouldn’t be able to survive either way.

“Nia, Chloe.”

“Yeah.”

“…Yeah.”

“We’ll infiltrate the church tomorrow night. Get ready.”

We also should clean the bodies up for Rielle before we leave. We were risking our identities by infiltrating the church this early, but… There was no other choice.

“I need to save those girls at least.”

I couldn’t believe the audacity of those guys. Pretending to be holy and pure while doing something so sinister behind the scenes. They were so disgusting, I felt sick to my bones.
