Chapter 34: I Will Do Anything

After the situation had calmed down, Kai headed to the slum while holding hands with Chloe and Nia. Although he wasn’t particularly fond of that part of town, but he felt like he needed to see for himself what had happened. As Kai was leading the two of them through the forest, Chloe, who was holding his hand, stared at his back. Kai’s words echoed in her mind. 

“I’m sparing your life this time because of Chloe. However, if you go on another rampage without caring about other people… I won’t be so kind to you anymore.”

Did he really think I wouldn’t hear that part…?

Chloe, someone who had faced countless life and death situations since she was young, had a keen sense of hearing. She could detect even the smallest movement around her. Hence why, she could hear anything. Every word Kai had uttered, even the word that he had tried to keep from her ears when he warned Kaltz. 

“….Good grief…”

“Hm? Did you say something?”

“No, nothing. But, Kai…”

“Hm?”

“Nia’s cheeks… Her cheeks look like they’re going to combust anytime soon.”

As soon as he heard Chloe say those, Kai turned around in shock. Just as Chloe had said, Nia looked displeased to say the least. 

“Ni-Nia?! No! You’re wrong! I’m holding Chloe’s hand to pull her along with us! I’m not trying to cheat or anything like that…!”

“Kai, you also held hands with Alywn before we left the lab. This crime is punishable by death.”

“N-no, no, no!! That was to steal her skills! I had no ulterior motives at all!!”

“Kai is a playboy.”

“Where did you learn that word!? Nia, where did you learn that word!?!?!?”

“…Pfft, hahaha!”

Just what’s up with this boy?

The way he acted when he was beating Kaltz to pulp and now… The difference in his personality was seriously unbelievable. Even though he possessed unimaginable magic power, he became completely flustered just by hearing a single word from Nia.

Watching Kai trying to calm Nia down desperately, Chloe clenched and unclenched her now free left hand a few times. 

…If I said I wanted to hold his hands a little longer… Nah, I shouldn’t.

After giving Kaltz his final warning, Kai swiftly knocked him unconscious with one hit and stood up. At the same time, Brien and Alwyn, who were standing beside Chloe, also flinched. Their reaction was to be expected though. After all, their leader was treated like a mere toy, thrown and kicked around like he was nothing. They knew this boy was not someone they could defeat no matter what. 

However, Kai didn’t hurt them at all. Instead, he only looked at them intently with a complicated expression on his face before he turned his heel to leave. 

Brien, feeling suspicious of Kai’s action, spoke up before Kai could.

“….What are you going to do to us?”

Kai only shrugged.

“I’m not going to do anything. I don’t have any reason to do anything to you.”

“B-But… Aren’t you a demon?!”

“Come on, what are you talking about? The only demon here is those guys.”

Kai pointed with his chin at Gebels and Kaltz, who were lying side by side. Chloe couldn’t stop herself from agreeing with his words. Indeed. Chloe also agreed that those two were the real demons. 

“Ah, that’s right. Brien, Alwyn.”

“Hu-Huh? Wh-Why are you calling our names?!”

“Hm? Ah, well… it will take too long to explain everything, so I will skip that. Anyway, I have a couple requests for you two. Can you please listen to it?”

“…Requests?”

Those two didn’t expect the word ‘please’ would come out from the mouth of a demon. Alwyn’s eyes widened in surprise and Kai reached out his hand to her first. 

“Can we hold hands for about 5 minutes? Oh, of course, I won’t hurt you.”

“Hu-Huh?! Wh-Why all of a sudden…”

“Well, technically, we’re still enemies so I can’t tell you the details… Wait-! Nia-! No! No!!! Stop!! You know about my skill, right?!??!! You understand, right?!?!?!”

Both Brien and Alywyn were stunned to see a complete change of attitude from Kai. It just seemed uncanny to think that this was the same demon that had beat Kaltz relentlessly just a moment before. 

“….You have two requests, right? One was shaking hands with Alwyn. What about the other one?”

“Ah, well, about that…”

Seeing the carnage scattered in the facility, Kai smirked. 

“I’d appreciate it if you could leave this place as it is.”

That was Kai’s final request. After he finished shaking hands with Alwyn, Kai immediately grabbed Chloe and Nia’s wrist and ran away from the laboratory. Of course, Chloe didn’t offer any resistance. Although she felt bad for Brien and Alwyn, but she really didn’t want to see Kaltz’s face a second longer than necessary.

“Buuu…. I demand 1000 pats as punishment.”

“I don’t mind it but if I pat your head for 1000 times, your hair will fall out, you know?~ You have to take good care of your hair!”

“I have a lot of hair, so it’s not a problem.”

“Wha-What?! Is that on purpose?! Are you trying to pick a fight with me now?!”

“Pfft… I don’t understand why Kai is getting angry…”

“You little…!!”

“….Fufufu… Ahahaha!”

This… Is really fun. 

Being with them made me feel at ease. I felt happy and peaceful. Chloe couldn’t stop herself from wishing she could stay by their side.

“Hey, Kai.”

And so, Chloe thought she had to make things clear. After all, Kai had helped her so much, so much so that she couldn’t possibly repay his kindness in this lifetime.

“What should I do from now on?”

“Huh?”

“….I feel like I’m being trained by Kai. I have mixed feelings about this.”

“Good girl, good girl~”

As Kai said those strange words while hugging Nia tightly, Kai lifted his head. Seeing Chloe’s refreshed face, Kai broke into a broad smile.

“That’s right… I personally want you to become our comrades right away, but…”

“…..”

“But I can’t force you since your feelings matter too. So, can you please listen to my story for a bit after we arrive at the slum?”

“…Listen to your story?”

“Yeah.”

Kai then smiled. His smile was so pure, something that no one would expect from a demon. 

“I want to tell the two of you my secret.”
