Chapter 27: The Empire’s True Goal

In a basement not far from the blown-up Schwitz Detention Camp, Gebels let out a creepy laugh as he stared at the two children strapped on the table. yes. One boy and one girl. 

Gebels had managed to knock Kai and Nia out, turning them into his living sacrifices.

“I’ve been hearing rumors about demons for a long time…. A mysterious existence that transcends human understanding…. Its overwhelming power that makes everything in this world possible… Ah.. I’ve always desired that power.”

Test tubes containing corpses and ominous culture fluids… Crimson red blood stains and claw marks on the wall… This was Gebel’s laboratory. All of the horrific deeds Gebels had done, all the suffering the sacrifices had suffered here, everything was etched in the walls of the laboratory. 

Gebels hadn’t expected his plan would go this smoothly. However, since he had finished all of the preparations needed beforehand, things should be proceeding just fine. 

Gebels looked down at the two children. Their magic power had completely depleted.Their eyes were still closed shut. Gebels then started talking to himself. 

“The place where magic power gathers in humans… The magic core… It’s here, right above the navel. Fufu… If I gouge their stomach out, I’m sure I’ll get to see something fascinating. Ah, but before that… I need to conduct thorough tests to see how the demon’s magic power affects their bodies.”

All of the preparations were complete. Gebels called for someone to bring these two unconscious children to the basement. He then had their limbs bound tightly with chains to ensure they wouldn’t be able to move at all. 

He wished to hear their cries as he dissected them alive. Those tormented cries were like music to him. Just imagining Kai’s face contorted in pain was enough to make Gebels’ heart race wildly. Thrills surged through Gebels’ spine, intoxicating him. 

Hearing Nia hurling curses at him as he tortured Kai didn’t sound bad either. After all, Nia was always by Kai’s side. Her cries must be delightful to hear too. He planned on slicing the skins off their fingers one by one, taking his time to enjoy the sensation. 

A sinister smile appeared on Gebels’ face and soon enough, Kai opened his eyes.

“…Mmh… Nnh…”

“Oh my. Good morning.”

“Huh?! Where is this place…?!”

“Fufu~ This is my laboratory.”

Kai lifted his head as much as he could, given that all of his limbs were still chained. He strained his neck to try to scan the room. Even just from a single glance, it was easy to assume that this place must be hell. After all, every person in those test tubes had their bodies mangled and torn apart.

“Hm? Oh, you must be curious about those things? Well, I guess you could just say they are the byproduct of my experiments… Black magic can bring the dead back to life. I’m in the middle of experimenting that, so I have to preserve their bodies.”

“….But they don’t have arms? And that person over there doesn’t have legs, and that person-“

“Have their abdomen cut open and organs spilled out, yes. That’s right. Well, it’s not a problem though? I can just sew them back up later.”

“….You…”

“Fufu~ Nice. I like the look in your eyes. Yes, keep cursing me… Keep hating me… The more you do… The more enjoyable it will be for me to torture you.”

Even after the insanity spewed out by the psychopath, the boy’s face remained calm. Annoyed by the boy’s whole being, Gebels sat down on a chair next to the boy.

“Alright… Well, let’s have a little chat first, shall we? I’m going to tell you what you’re going to be used for.”

“…You’re probably planning on doing something stupid, aren’t you?”

“Aw, I’m hurt. I’m about to reveal some of the top-secret information of the Empire to you. I’d appreciate a little more praise from you.”

“Go to hell, you disgusting creep.”

“Fufufu~ Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to preserve your body in one of those test tubes as well.”

Gebels let out a short sigh before continuing.

“You see, I don’t really understand the meaning of ‘taboo’.”

“…Huh?”

“For example… They say murder is taboo, right? But why? I don’t see what’s wrong with murder. Why shouldn’t we commit murder? Why is it wrong to conduct experiments on people?”

“I have 0 interest in hearing your shitty thoughts.”

“Well, I don’t see you have any choice in this. I will tell you anyway. After all, don’t you think you should understand why you’re going to die? Fufufu… And so, I’ve been dabbling in black magic for a long time.”

“I’ve used the trash from the slum… Locked them up and conducted various experiments on them. Now then, let me ask you one question. What do you think is the purpose of these experiments?”

And then, Gebels muttered softly while looking up at the black ceiling.

Even after hearing those words, Kai only narrowed his eyes. He didn’t even look the least surprised. After all, he already knew. He knew exactly what kind of a man this Gebels was and what kind of ideology this madman held.

“To taint all citizens of this Empire with black magic. Manipulate their minds and turn them into expendable slaves… Those are the tasks I’ve received from the Crown Prince. If he said ‘cut your belly’, I’d cut it. If he said ‘give me your life force,’ I’d give it. He wanted me to create a mindless energy source and so, I’m doing it.”

“….Is that the reason why you’re experimenting on people?”

“Yes. To completely erase human ego, I need to deal with various other factors first, like their souls, magic power and so many other things. Fufu~ Of course, there are also some experiments that I did simply for my own entertainment. There are times when I just want to blow someone up just for the sake of it.”

Gebels recalled happily as he clasped his hand together. He looked like a mad demon.

“Aw, come on. Don’t look at me like you’re staring at trash. I’m just craving for some stimulation, that’s all.”

“….”

“After all, there’s nothing sweeter than a human death to me. The thrill is absolutely exquisite.”

Kai couldn’t help but to let out a wry laugh. Of course, Gebels’ true nature had been revealed in the game. This wasn’t news to him. However, now that he had to face Gebels in person like this… He couldn’t stop the chills that ran down his spine. He was feeling extremely disgusted at Gebels. 

“….Why are you laughing? Don’t tell me… You’re going to talk about justice and morality when you have a literal demon within you?”

“No, I just feel relieved that the plan is going even smoother than I expected.”

“…..Plan?”

“You know Gebels, I….”

Deepening his voice, Kai glared at Goebbels. His glare was so ferocious, far too ferocious for a 15-year-old boy who was about to be used as a test subject.

“I’m not a hero. I don’t have any obligation to help anyone either. In fact, my true objective is far from noble. I just want to destroy this country.”

“….Pfft!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Wonderful, wonderful! Alright, then tell me, why do you want to destroy this country?”

“Because I’m disgusted.”

Gebels suddenly stopped moving upon hearing that word. He realized Kai wasn’t only referring to the Empire, but also to himself. 

“Both you and the Empire are so disgusting. You guys are so messed up to the point that my common sense can’t even understand you guys.”

“…..Well, maybe your ‘common sense’ is wrong?”

“No? I don’t think so. In fact, I think YOUR common sense…”

After gazing at the rows of test tubs in the distance, Kai’s lips curled into a smirk before he continued on.

“Your shitty common sense can just go to hell.”

“…Ah, I see. It seems we really can’t see eye to eye, huh?”

“Stop sprouting bullshit. I know you never had any intention of seeing eye to eye with me from the start, right?”

“Well, of course not. After all, you won’t be able to leave this place anymore.”

Gebels smiled nonchalantly before he picked up a knife. The knife was thin and sharp. A deadly weapon for sure. This was the tool of the devil that had sliced numerous people apart. 

“That’s why I can reveal the Empire’s top-secret information to you… Well, if the first thing that young lady over there sees when she wakes up is your writhing form… Fufu… That doesn’t sound too bad either.”

“…..You bastard.”

“Ah, what a lovely expression you have there, Demon.”

Gebels raised his knife and smirked mockingly again. 

“Please do me a favor. Keep that expression on your face until the end, okay? Now then…”

With that, Gebels swung his knife down and pierced Kai’s wrist. Blood started gushing out and a scream echoed inside this sinister laboratory. Kai’s body stiffened. Under normal circumstances, Gebels should’ve burst out laughing by now. That was how it was supposed to be. After all, Gebels had done this thousands of times before. 

And yet… And yet….

“-?! Argh…! Aahhhhhhhhhh!!”

The moment Gebels stabbed Kai’s wrist, he was the one that screamed. Not Kai. His slitted eyes widened, he screamed while clutching onto his right wrist. 

What…? What’s happening? Why… Why is blood gushing out from my wrist?!

“Argh-!!! Shi-!! Shit!! You-!! You bastard…!!”

“….Hahaha~”

“You bastard! What-…. What have you done?! I… I…!!”

“I told you, didn’t I?”

As he said so, Kai effortlessly lifted his upper body, as if the chains tied to his body didn’t even exist in the first place. 

“Wha-Wha-?!”

“You’re going to die over 5000 times.”

“Yo-You son of a-“

“But man, you really have no manners at all, huh?”

“Huh?! Manners-?!”

“See? Look over there.”

Kai pointed with his chin and Gebels obediently followed his gaze and almost immediately, Gebels’ face contorted into one of shock. Standing at the entrance of the laboratory was a person who shouldn’t be there. With silky black hair cascading down to her shoulders and a pair of brilliant golden eyes… It was Chloe, someone who was supposed to be fighting the horde of monsters in the slum. 

“You didn’t even greet your guests when they arrived at your place. How rude.”

“You bastard…!!! You!!!!”

Gebels voice, dripping with madness and fury, echoed within the laboratory. Hearing that, Kai laughed cheerfully before he shrugged his shoulders. 

“What’s wrong? Is there a problem?”
