Chapter 108: Caught You

The Guide’s expressionless face now showed a hint of surprise. I looked at the four people behind me and the soldiers following them. I never expected things would turn out in this way, but… I felt like I wouldn’t lose even though I had been pushed to the very brink just a moment ago. I was certain I could win. 

“Everyone, you heard it, right?”

I was asking if they had heard my plan from Kiriel. I asked quietly, in a voice low enough so only four of them could hear me. Nia, Chloe, Alwyn and Brien immediately nodded at my question.

“…”

“…”

I turned my attention back to the Guide. His face had reverted to his usual expressionless face as he stared at me. His eyes spoke volumes. He wouldn’t just knock me out, like he had done before.  He was going to kill me for real this time. 

“Alwyn.”

“…Yes!”

The final battle was about to begin. The moment Alwyn heard my voice, she clasped her hands together and began chanting. Before long, large-scale holy magic was cast on everyone, including myself, making our bodies feel lighter. I had asked her to use the highest level of buffs she could muster right now. After receiving buffs from Alwyn, Brien readied her bow.

“Magic Unit! Kill that guy together with Brien-sama!!”

The leader of the Resistance shouted and a barrage of various spells covered the sky. Fire, ice, wind, and light. Magic of different colors and attributes mixed together. All of the spells were launched together alongside Brien’s arrow towards the Guide.

“Gungnir!!”

“Magic Unit, goooooo!”

The Guide’s eyes widened at the barrage of magic covering the whole sky. The whole area was jam-packed with magic, seemingly leaving no room to escape. Soon, his vision was engulfed by light and then a massive explosion erupted. The ground shook, and dust rose from where he had been standing. I immediately activated my magic vision to check if he was still alive.

…He’s still alive!!

“Don’t let your guard down!! He’s still alive! …. Above us!!!”

I shouted and everyone’s gaze shifted to the sky. The Guide’s body emerged from within the black smoke. He was in shambles. His muscles were torn and he was covered in black blood. And yet, despite his battered state, he was still glaring at us with his glowing yellow eyes and charged in. In his hands that looked like the hand of an evil spirit, a sphere formed of swirling magic power was taking shape. What was worse… His target was not us. He was targeting our rear side, where the magic unit and the priests were gathered!

“Tch!”

I rushed over in an instant, trying to shield those in the back. But just as the sphere was about to reach us—he suddenly let out a shriek.

“Guhah!?”

“…!!”

Blood spurted from the arm holding the magic sphere. I hesitated for a moment, but quickly grasped the situation and looked at Chloe. Chloe was approaching me with a Superior Cube in his hand. It was the artifact I had given her before, the artifact that could connect spaces. It seemed by using that pendant, Chloe had swung a knife at the Guide from a distance, slicing the Guide’s arm. It was nothing short of a divine feat. I didn’t think she would be able to accurately pinpoint his position within those tense moments. I stood there, impressed at Chloe and she smiled confidently at me. 

However, our battle was still far from over. 

“Priests!! Now’s your chance!!”

I could hear Alwyn shouting from afar. The startled priests exchanged glances before nodding to each other. They then placed their hands on the ground. Soon after, a massive barrier took shape, followed by a glowing yellow magic circle covering the earth.

“””Blessing Aria!!”””

The dome-shaped barrier, infused with divine power, formed directly over the ground where the Guide had fallen on.

“Gwaaaaahhh!?”

Within the prison formed from opposing magic attributes, the Guide let out a voice filled with agony. His body, veins bulging, slowly began to burn as if being seared. Yet, even in that state, he refused to give up. He mustered all his remaining strength and swung his fists. Pounding against the barrier walls wildly.

“Gahh!?”

But even though the Guide was only pounding the barrier with brute force, I could see the priests trembling violently in return. We didn’t have many priests in the first place. Their strength to maintain the barrier was reaching its limit.

“Kai-san…!! At this rate…!!”

Alywn shouted, looking frustrated. Her voice was strained as she desperately held her ground. Just like she said, the glass-like barrier was cracking under the Guide’s relentless assault. The barrier could shatter at any moment now. Which meant… This was our time to act. 

“Kuhahahaha!!!”

The Guide’s laughter rang out loudly, as if he found this situation genuinely amusing. Soon enough, the yellow barrier completely shattered. The monster yelled again as he flew back into the air.

“This is truly amusing…!! But this is the end for all of you!!”

“…No.”

The Guide’s body was already on the process of regenerating. The burned skin was getting repaired and the copious amounts of black blood that had been flowing from his body started to vanish little by little. However, I shook my head and raised my index finger.

“Above you.”

“…Huh?”

Then, the sight of a black reaper entered the Guide’s vision. The demonic spirit that Nia had summoned soared through the air, hitting the Guide with its fist. The fists, which were infused with pure, powerful magic, delivered a horrifying amount of force to the Guide.

“Ugh-?!?!”

The block hit him square in the face and he was slammed into the ground. With a dull thud, his body was embedded into the ground.

Now’s the time. 

I thought to myself. The situation had been proceeding just as I had hoped. Although he could regenerate and  possessed overwhelming strength, he wasn’t invincible by any means. Most importantly, if I could just pull out the cube embedded in that heart—he wouldn’t be able to regenerate. Taking out the cube would make him significantly weaker.

I ran to extract the cube embedded in his heart… I ran to end everything!

“…!!”

However, I felt something was off midway. I immediately stopped dead in my tracks. Before long, a gigantic reaper appeared before us. An evil spirit, several times larger than Nia’s, was looking down at me. 

“A…Aaaa!!”

“…Wha-What is that?!”

I could hear the terrified voices of my companions from behind. The Guide looked down at me with an emotionless face and said. 

“I told you, didn’t I? This is the end.”

“…”

“…It was fun while it lasted.”

Then, the massive evil spirit formed a double-edged sword and pointed its tip at me.

“I’ll remember you all. Not as mere pests interfering with my mission, but as worthy enemies!”

“Wha-…?! Kaaiiiiiiiii!!!!!!”

Nia screamed my name louder than ever before, but I had no time to respond. With a ‘pushhh’ sound, something inside of me was being torn apart. It was the sound of something being pierced through, skewered. I could feel a hole being opened up in my body, followed by an intense pain coursing through every part of me.

“…A-Argh….!!”

The tip of the massive double-edged sword pierced through me. I coughed up blood from my mouth. All I could see was the sword, ignited in a purple blaze.

“…Farewell, Kai.”

“…Ugh.. Aaaah…”

I could hear everyone’s voices from a distance. Screams, shock, and voices soaked in sorrow. My consciousness began to blur, and the thread that connected me to life started to fray. The spirit sword controlled by the Guide drove deeper into my body.

“A-Argh….”

More dark red blood flowed out from my body. I could feel my consciousness growing weak and the memories of the past came rushing back. But…. But…

“Hehehe…”

“Huh…?”

I started to laugh.

“Hehehehe…. Hahahahahaha!!”

“Wha-Wha-?!”

The Guide’s eyes widened as he floated in the sky. I began to laugh again as I gripped the blade of the sword with my trembling hands. I had sworn in my heart. I would defeat it, even if it cost me my life. And this situation couldn’t be more perfect for me to fulfill that wish. 

“…I caught you now, you bastard.”

I looked up at him as I spat out more blood from my mouth. 

“This is the end.”

I drew up all the magic power coursing through my body and then… I showed the best smile I could muster to him.
