Chapter 107: Bonds

Due to the onslaught of large-scale holy magic, the Guide had to retreat quite far back. Taking advantage of this opening, the leader of the Resistance came to check up on along with several priests. 

“Kai-sama…! Hii-! Your left arm!”

“We will try to buy as much time as we can, so the priest! Please focus on healing Kai-sama!”

“You… What are you all doing here…?”

I said. I couldn’t stop the shock from showing on my face upon seeing the sudden appearance of the Resistance. 

“What are you all doing here?! You saw it yourself, didn’t you? That thing was able to wipe the entirety of the empire’s army with a single blow! Why didn’t you return to the city?!”

“Because there’s no way we could stand a chance against the monster that the heroes couldn’t defeat.”

A familiar voice. A familiar face. The healing magic gradually returned my consciousness back. I soon realized the person standing before me was Kiriel, the Resistance leader who should’ve received my order to retreat. 

“In any case, we’ll all die if we don’t defeat that thing right here and now. So, isn’t it better for us to support Heroes-sama instead? It’s better to die fighting than to die running.”

“…!!”

“And, here…”

Kiriel pulled out a small glass vial from her pouch while smiling. 

“Rielle-sama prepared this. It’s a special elixir made exclusively for Kai-sama and the others. You won’t be able to find this in the market. We happened to run into Rielle-sama when we were retreating.”

“Rielle…? I thought she’s taking refuge in the city…?”

“After seeing the huge explosion that wiped the imperial army clean, Rielle-sama couldn’t stand still anymore. We barely managed to stop her from coming to the forest. In exchange for that, she gave us this elixir.”

Rielle was smart. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to do anything much on the battlefield. And yet… She still tried to come here, ignoring the danger… I guess I was really precious to her…

“Thank you. I will take it with me.”

“Yes.”

With my still-functioning right hand, I took the elixir and gulped it down in one go. In an instant, I could feel a surge of energy rushing through my veins. The pain subsided and my mind cleared. The priests, who were treating me, were staring at me with their eyes wide open. They were astonished at how quickly my wounds were healing.

“Thank you. That should be enough. I’m fine now, so please take care of the others instead.”

“But Kai-sama…!!”

“Thanks to all of your hard work, I can move my left arm now. I’ll be okay.”

I said to the priests before scanning my surroundings. Nia and the others were being carried to a large tree, where several mages had put up a massive barrier while the priests tried to heal them with healing magic. Thanks to their joint efforts, the girls were slowly regaining their consciousness. 

“That guy has a material cube embedded in his body…”

Sighing, I continued my explanation to Kiriel. 

“It’s the same kind of cube that was in Kaltz’s body. That cube must be the source of their regeneration ability, but unfortunately the cube is protected between his tough skin. We need to aim for the heart, where the cube is.”

“The heart… Understood.”

“Yeah.”

Standing up, I took in the scene before me. A few brave souls had charged toward the Guide, but they were struck down by the double-edge sword. Blood sprayed everywhere as their life perished. The Guide, with an expressionless face like usual, continued slaughtering the incoming Resistance’s army while keeping his eyes on me. Although the Guide had been attacked by the magic spell from the magic unit, his body still remained unscathed. The Guide continued massacring the soldier, like he was toying with their lives. 

“…”

Kill. I need to kill it. No matter what it takes.

“Kiriel, there’s something I need to ask from you.”

“Yes. Anything.”

“I want to test something out. Can you go over there and tell Nia and the others my plan? I will be the one to kill that guy.”

“…Yes!”

The Guide’s yellow eyes began to shine again and a purple explosion erupted in the battlefield. Bit by bit, the Guide kept getting closer to us. The Guide couldn’t be stopped, even with the priest’s holy magic and the soldier’s desperate struggle. Soon enough, Kiriel rushed to where Nia and the others were gathering after receiving my full explanation. I took another deep breath. 

“Alright. Let’s do this.”

I need to kill him, even if it costs me my life.

“Ugh?! Argh-.!!”

“DIEEEEEEE!! YOU SHITTY MONSTER!!”

“ARGHHHHHH!!”

The Guide couldn’t understand. He genuinely didn’t understand it. The eyes of the humans that came rushing to him were filled with fears. Not a single exception. They knew that they would die if they came to him and yet, they still fought and jumped straight into the darkness of death. This contradiction was confusing. That being said, these humans were fated to die anyway. And so, the Guide continued eliminating the humans that came to him. He was merely moving mechanically, just trying to carry out his duty. He was just trying to fulfill the reason for his existence.

In the distance, he could see Kai glaring his way. That boy’s eyes were burning with fury, fully intended to burn the Guide to ashes. His tattered left arm had healed and he seemed able to move normally now. 

What a monster.

The Guide thought to himself. However, this was the end. He didn’t need to hold back anymore. 

“U-UWAHHHHHHH?!”

“I-It’s that thing from earlier!! The one from earlier…!!”

He dispelled the double-edge magic sword. That thing was nothing more than a playful distraction while he waited for Kai to recover. He jumped into the air, attempting to summon the same meteor that had turned the imperial army to dust in an instant. He formed a small sphere in his arms and tossed it into the sky. He concentrated his magic power into that ball and soon enough, the blue sky was shrouded in darkness again. This magic was a skill that required a considerable amount of magic power and energy, even for the Guide. 

However, the Guide decided he didn’t want to play around anymore. When facing an opponent worthy of him, the Guide knew he had to properly guide them to their death with respect. 

“Now… What will you do? Can you defend against this magic spell…?”

The Guide muttered to himself as he stared down at Kai, who was standing on the ground. 

Now, show me… What will you do?

This wasn’t something that Kai could defend against. Even though Kai’s wound had healed, but the magic power he had used wouldn’t return. The magic power inside Kai’s body must had decreased significantly during their little fight earlier. Logically speaking, Kai would also fall victim to his magic, turning to dust just like everyone else. However, Kai jumped into the sky. He rose to the top of the trees, soaring high into the air. His red eyes were shining brightly despite the impending doom. 

The Guide’s eyes widened in shock. He didn’t expect this. He immediately assumed a combat stance, but… Kai’s target was not the Guide. It was the sphere.

“-!?”

Kai conjured a black magic spear with one hand and threw it at the sphere without any hesitation. The black spear was glowing ever so faintly before piercing the sphere. The collusion caused the sphere to explode. A deafening roar shook the world. 

“Wha-?!”

Kai had mixed a bit of holy power attribute into the spear…! He deliberately let the spear touch the core of the sphere to make it explode in the sky!

The Guide landed on the ground with a soft thud. He stared at his enemy with a bewildered expression on his face. On the other hand, his enemy was watching him with a cold, merciless gaze. Kai’s red eyes were burning with fury.

“…I do have to admit, you have an excellent combat skill, Demon.”

“Well, although I may look like this, but I’m considered a pretty skilled player back in my original world.”

Kai said half-jokingly with a confident smile on his face. Of course, the Guide didn’t understand what Kai meant. He didn’t know that Kai was talking about the game. 

“…The time before you broke through dimensions?”

“Yes, that’s right. Before I came to this world.”

“You are an outsider and yet, you’re trying to save this world. Why?”

“…Because there are things in this world that didn’t exist in my original world.”

Footsteps were echoing all around, gradually growing louder as the scattered soldiers regrouped. The leaders positioned themselves at the forefront, ready to command. The Heroes, who had regained their consciousness thanks to the extensive healing magic, stepped forward. Clear, unyielding determination could be seen on their faces. Nia, Chloe, Brien, Alwyn. All of the girls who had been entangled together in the gears of fate. All of them were gathering behind Kai, standing tall and proud. Just like their leader, Kai, all of them were gazing ahead with unwavering determination.

Seeing all the pawns gathering in one place, the Guide smiled. 

“And what is this something that doesn’t exist in your original world but exists in this world?”

“Bonds.”

Kai answered as a matter of factly before he continued on. 

“Some people also say bonds are the essence of happiness itself.”
