Chapter 104: A Strong Enemy

A catastrophe. 

That would be the most fitting word to describe the sight before me. It was truly a catastrophe. I instinctively blocked the incoming meteor with a shield and in an instant, the surroundings area had already turned into a charred wasteland. The lush vegetation was completely blown away by the impact and in just a matter of seconds, hundreds of imperial soldiers were annihilated. 

“Haha…”

It happened so suddenly and overwhelming that I couldn’t help but laugh. What a terrifying power. Then, he appeared. A monster, twice the size of an adult man with bulging muscles under his skin and sharp yellow eyes gleaming with pure menace. The monster stepped through the pile of blood and shattered body parts. 

“…Guide.”

“…Kai.”

“This is fate.”

That guy said. Of course, I didn’t trust in the so-called fate the monster kept spewing about. I glanced behind me. The moment the Guide appeared, the girls immediately understood what was happening. They had already gathered behind me. 

Nia, Chloe, Alwyn, Brien and… Me. 

“Kirie. This is an order.  Gather the surviving soldiers and return to our base immediately.”

“Bu-But…! Kai-sama…!”

“There’s no need to add more unnecessary sacrifices. You saw it earlier, didn’t you? That thing is on a completely different level than the Crown Prince.”

Indeed. Perhaps because Kiriel had just witnessed the sight of hundreds of people turning to dust in an instant with her very eyes, Kiriel couldn’t say anything in return. Fear was clearly written on the faces of the Resistance members behind her as well. Judging from their condition, it would be impossible for them to fight against the Guide properly. Kiriel said while biting her lower lip. Her fists were trembling. She was grieving for her lack of power. I gave her a wry smile and waved my hand.

Instead of responding, Kiriel issued the order to retreat in a loud voice to the other leaders of the Resistance. The Guide watched it all. Then, the corners of historn mouth were curled up into a smile. 

“Not a very enjoyable outcome, isn’t it?”

“…What do you mean?”

“All of those people are supposed to die too.”

“What? What are you—”

But then, the Guide suddenly vanished before me. Sensing the flow of magic, I quickly looked up. There. The Guide was flying in the cloudy sky. A huge amount of magic was concentrated into hisfist, creating a massive purple flame. 

“A bit earlier than my plan, but oh well.”

The massive ball of purple flame was about to fly toward Kiriel and the others. And then, I—

“U-UWAHHHHHH?!??!”

“A-AAHHHH!! Huh…? K-Kai-sama…?”

“…Ugh..!!”

“Hoo…”

The moment I sensed something bad was about to happen, I immediately jumped into the air and managed to block that thing’s fist mid-air. Magic collided with magic, creating a palpable shockwave. Although I had blocked his fist with both of my hands, my hands were still tingling painfully. It was as if my palms were being burned.

“So you can block this, huh? As expected from a human who broke through dimension.”

“Tch…! What are you all doing?! MOVE! ALL OF YOU!!”

“Ye-Yes…!!”

The fear of dying kicked in. They knew they would die had they stayed there even a second longer. All members of the Resistance began fleeing at lightning speed. On the other side, I was still gripping the Guide’s fist. The Guide smirked while staring at them.

“You fight for the sake of protecting people like them? You’re like a hero.”

“…Ha. Are you kidding me? You don’t know anything about humans.”

“Hm?”

“No human wants to watch someone die right in front of them. In other words, I’m just acting based on my instinct. What I really want to protect is something else.”

“Ooh… Like the girls behind you, perhaps? Spoiler alert. You can’t protect them.”

“Then, let me tell you something.”

Smirking, I said to him.

“Behind you.”

“….What?”

A massive sword made from bone was protruding beneath the dark, ominous storm clouds. It was Nia’s magic. Turning my attention to the forest, I saw Nia clasping her hands together. She was demonstrating her full power after receiving buffs from Alwyn. This was the skill she had when she was the final boss of the game. A spell that only those who stood at the pinnacle of dark magic could use. 

“Death Bringer.”

The colossal demon sword, which was large enough to cover the sky, swung down toward the Guide. He tried to dodge. His yellow eyes were flashing, but he was too naive. I immediately lunged at him from the front.

“Wha—!?”

He probably didn’t expect I’d engage in a close-quarters fight. Hence why he failed to react on time. 

“Ugh-?!”

My magic-infused uppercut landed perfectly on his jaw. His jaw was really hard. It was as if I was hitting a stone. I couldn’t stop myself from grimacing in pain. 

“Kuhah—!?!”

The Guide retaliated. He sent me flying to the ground by kicking me. The pain was so excruciatingly painful that I couldn’t breathe for a moment. My vision was spinning around. This was the first time I had been hit like this since I came to this world. 

“Gah…!! Haa…! Haa…!”

“Kai!!”

I could hear Chloe calling me from afar. I put my hands on the spot the Guide had kicked me and almost immediately, a sharp pain shot through me. My ribs were definitely broken from that kick. 

“Cough, cough…!! Haa…!!”

At least, I must’ve broken two or three ribs. I had never experienced something this painful before. I was struggling to catch my breath, but still. The situation was still in our favor. While I was trying to distract myself from the pain, the bone sword Nia had summoned was flying toward the Guide with several magic arrows accompanying it. 

“WIND BLAST!!”

Floating in the air, the Guide was swallowed by the intensity of Nia and Brien’s magic. An explosion that shook the ground tore through the world. 

“U-Uwahhh?!?!”

“Kai! Kai!!”

A tornado was formed from the impact, sweeping through the area. I could hear Alwyn’s scream while Chloe was searching for me in great panic. Eventually, the massive explosion that had nearly blown us along subsided. I looked up at the still cloudy sky. There, in the middle of the sky…

“Kuh… Fufufu…”

“Wha-What….? Why…?”

There was the Guide. He was still floating in the sky, completely unharmed. Chloe, who had arrived beside me, could only stand there. We were both speechless. No one could’ve predicted this outcome. After all, we had attacked the Guide with everything we had. 

“Haah…”

I sighed while pressing my hand against my broken ribs.

“Getting a happy ending is not easy, huh…”
