I Got Fired as a Hero Today - Vol.3 Chapter 98: Training at the Morgue Ruins
“Oh, how cute!”
Hinako’s voice was lively.
Arata also thought they were indeed cute. They were rabbits.
About ten rabbits were twitching their noses and looking over here.
“I love animals. Come here, come here.”
“Wait.”
Suzu stopped Hinako from approaching the rabbits.
“What’s wrong?”
Hinako was puzzled and wary.
“Hinako, don’t let your guard down. Those are monsters.”
Arata replied.
“Monsters? But they’re so cute?”
“That’s right.”
They looked like rabbits. However, a small, short horn was sprouting from their foreheads. Then, the horn suddenly extended.
“Both of you, watch out! It’s a Horn Rabbit!”
As Arata shouted, the rabbit came flying like a bullet.
“Eek!”
Hinako screamed.
“Hah!”
Arata exhaled.
He cut the Horn Rabbit in half with a single stroke, which was flying towards Hinako.
“Light Wall.”
Suzu creates a barrier of light. The Horn Rabbit crashes into the barrier.
Arata swiftly takes down the Horn Rabbits that come flying towards him.
Hinako stares at Arata in astonishment.
“He’s not as useless as everyone says.”
Seeing Hinako mutter that, Suzu smiled a little.
She seemed pleased.
Turning around as if to protect Hinako, Arata is fighting the Horn Rabbit,
“Hinako, if you don’t participate a bit, it won’t be training, will it? You came along because you were struggling, right?”
He said.
“Y-yeah, I understand.”
Hinako readied her one-handed sword.
The three of them took turns defeating the Horn Rabbits.
The Horn Rabbit’s attacks only come in a straight line, so as long as they can read that, it’s not a big deal.
However, their strong reproductive ability makes them troublesome when their numbers increase too much.
They were designated as pests because they frequently attacked peddlers.
After a while, the Horn Rabbits stopped their attacks.
It seemed that the Horn Rabbits in the area had been exterminated.
Arata’s skill, [Detection], shows no reaction either.
Arata grabs one of the Horn Rabbits’ ears that he saw and lifts it up.
“These can also be used for food.”
He says, and begins to slit its belly to drain the blood.
“Whoa!”
Hinako is startled by the sight.
“What? Have you never dissected a monster before?”
“No, I haven’t. Besides, is it really necessary?”
“What were you planning to eat during your journey? Do you think there are convenience stores everywhere? Here, give it a try.”
Arata handed a spare knife to Hinako.
“Huh? Is it really necessary? I thought the adventurers would take care of us outside of combat.”
Hinako was unable to move as she gripped the knife’s handle.
“See, even Suzu wouldn’t like it, right?”
When Hinako looked over at Suzu, she was mimicking the action and inserting the knife blade into the horn rabbit.
“Hinako, what are you doing?”
“Ugh! O-Okay, I got it.”
With trembling hands, she stabbed the knife blade into the horn rabbit’s abdomen.
The three of them bled one horned rabbit each.
“It’s not like we can finish eating all of this, and taking it home would be a hassle. Besides, this is just practice.”
“Oh, so you’re not taking it home? Even though you went through the trouble of breaking it down.”
Hinako felt a little disappointed.
Arata cut off the horn of the Horn Rabbit and showed it to the two.
“This will be proof of defeating the monster and can be exchanged for money, so let’s take this with us.”
The three of them collected the Horn Rabbit’s horn.
The horn was light and hard. It fit into a small bag, so it seemed like they could take it home.
The ruins had many paths branching off being a mining site for magic stones, and one could easily get lost if not careful.
Arata proceeded while mapping the area.
Suddenly, Arata stopped.
“What’s wrong?”
Suzu asked.
“There’s a reaction a little ahead.”
“Monsters?”
Hinako readied her one-handed sword.
“No, they seem like other adventurers.”
They weren’t using lanterns.
It was as if they were lying in wait in the darkness.
“I have a bad feeling. Let’s turn back.”
The moment Arata turned around, a deafening sound echoed.
“Kya!!”
Hinako and Suzu let out a scream.
The rocky ground was collapsing with a rumble.
They thought they were being cautious, but it was a trap.
“Earth wall!”
Arata cast a defensive barrier.
However, Arata’s magic was weak. With a sound like “parin,” it easily shattered and disappeared.
They tried to retrace their steps back through the original passage, but there was an explosion sound from that direction as well.
“Damn it!”
Arata cursed.
Then the ceiling collapsed, and a mass of rock fell onto the three of them.
A loud thud echoed, and a cloud of dust swirled up.
After a while, the ruins were once again enveloped in silence.
“Cough cough! Did it work?”
Kyouki asked, lighting a lantern and peering in.
“Let’s confirm. If we neglect this, it will cause trouble later.”
Rusdo said shrewdly. It was Rusdo who had set the trap with the explosive magic stone.
“Big brother, the adventurers who came with Arata were Hinako and Suzu.”
Gyle looked at their faces in the light of the lanterns.
“A hero… If that’s the case, we definitely have to kill all three of them.”
“We should finish them off here.”
If they returned alive, there was a possibility of identifying the culprit based on their testimony.
Rusdo used his thief skills to check for any survivors, but he couldn’t find any.
“Big brother!”
Gyle called out to Kyouki.
“What is it?”
“Look at this.”
It was a fissure.
It seemed to lead to a lower level.
He lit the lantern, but he couldn’t see below.
“It looks like someone jumped in without thinking.”
Rusdo touched the edge of the fissure.
There was blood on it, though he couldn’t tell whose it was.
“Are we getting off here?”
Gyle asked.
“I don’t know what’s going on. It’s definitely dangerous. We should take a different route.”
Rusdo suggested, and the two nodded.
