Chapter 58: Date and Interference

Jack-sama lent us a carriage. I became the driver while Luna-sama rode in the back. We carried along the lush green road with the hooves slowly kicking up the earth below. Soon enough, we could see a village where the people lived. We continued down ahead and soon, the capital came into a view. 

For some reason, Luna-sama was staring out the back window. Since I was feeling awkward as well, I didn’t turn around to look back at her. I continued focusing on my task until we finally left the carriage at the noble stables in the capital. 

I paid the fee for the stable with gold coins I had received from Keltz-sama. Our financial situations used to be dire but thanks to Keltz-sama, we were doing quite well now. That being said, neither I nor Rina had the habit of splurging. We hadn’t spent much of the money we had received from Keltz-sama. 

I went to the carriage and opened the door for Luna-sama.

“….”

She pursed her lips and just stared at me. 

“Hm?”

Refusing to stand up, Luna-sama looked upset. It seemed she wanted me to do something first. 

“Umm… Please be careful on your feet.”

I said as I reached out my hand for her to take. 

Then, she blushed and nodded before descending down the carriage. 

“Kyaa-!”

“Luna-sama!”

However, she suddenly slipped and fell toward me, seemingly not accustomed to the step of the carriage. I immediately reached out to hold her and the first thing that I touched was her exquisitely soft chest. The soft flesh changed shape under my fingers, serving its purpose to cushion Luna-sama’s fall. But of course, I didn’t manage to get a good grip on Luna-sama. She was still falling down so I immediately wrapped my arms around Luna-sama’s back out of reflex, causing her soft chest to get pressed against my chest. 

“Ka-Ka-Ka-Ka-Kanato…!”

“I-I’m terribly sorry!!”

Flustered, I quickly took a step away from her. 

Luna-sama, with her disheveled hair flowing back, looked very flushed. 

“It’s… It’s okay Kanato-onii-…. Kanato-san. This is not your fault. It’s all my mistake.”

“….”

This was such a refreshing sight. Before me, there stood the eldest daughter of a duke. Even though I had touched her body without permission, she didn’t get angry at me. Instead, she even went as far as to say it was her fault. 

Feeling relieved, I sighed.

“Luna-sama, let’s get going.”

I said with a smile.”

“Yes!”

We then started walking outside when suddenly, a  person who seemed to be the stable master came to us. 

“You must be from Lennox! Ahahaha!”

The stable master laughed heartily. 

Luna-sama nodded. The stable master glanced at me briefly before he returned his focus to Luna-sama. 

“I see you only have one guard with you…. He must be incredibly skilled for you to trust him that much.”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“I really respect the Lennox family. The wisdom of the Lennox family is indispensable to this kingdom.”

“Thank you.”

Luna-sama thanked him politely. At this moment, it finally dawned on me just how important this lady I escorted was. The members of Five Star didn’t really care about social status or anything, so I had been somewhat numb to it but Luna-sama… She was highly esteemed within the high society. I needed to be more careful around her.

We walked through the capital, enjoying our date. We went to a place that sold magical tools, where we were able to tinker with mysterious magical items. Then we went to a place that looked like a pharmacy to look at medicinal herbs and some strange potions. 

Though I could felt some strange and intimidating gazes here and there, but the gazes felt different to what I felt from Alan. Ignoring the gazes, we arrived at the busiest area of the capital city.

“Here, here! We have cheap vegetables!”

“These sweet elf lemons are half price now!”

“Delicious red pheasant meat from the south!! We don’t have much, so first come, first served!”

Amidst the voices of peddlers trying to attract customers, we could hear Celtic-style music being played around the area. Everything blended together harmoniously, evoking a beautiful symphony. 

Honestly speaking, I didn’t have much experience dating women back in Japan. However, Luna-sama and I were so different in terms of status that it made me feel like I was accompanying Luna-sama as her attendant,rather than as her date. This helped me not to make me feel nervous, even though under normal circumstances,I would be feeling extremely nervous. 

I believed I was able to escort Luna-sama properly without inciting any strange misunderstandings between us.

“Uh… Umm… Kanato-san.”

“Yes?”

“….”

While I was getting carried away by my sense of relief, Luna-sama suddenly slid her arm around mine.

“Huh? Huh??”

Actually, while we were walking, our shoulders would occasionally bumped together. Hence why I had been keeping a little distance to avoid it from happening, but this time Luna-sama was leaning in to me on purpose. 

Taken aback by the sudden gesture, I stared at her face in disbelief. However, Luna-sama was smiling ever so slightly. She looked somewhat pleased. 

But at the same time, the gazes I had been feeling grew even more intense. 

Yeah. I guess we’re being targeted, huh?

“Umm… Luna-sama.”

“-!! I’m sorry. I guess you’re bothered by this, huh?”

“No-No, that’s not it. I just want to say that we should have lunch soon.”

“Oh, um, yeah. That sounds great.”

In order to escape from this mysterious yet intimidating gaze, we decided to go to a restaurant I frequented. Almost all of the patrons were commoners. 

Realizing that my choice was a big mistake, I panicked and suggested to go to a more upscale restaurant that could fit Luna-sama’s standard but then… She looked at my face, chuckled and said this place was fine for her. 

“Sorry to keep you waiting! Here’s your order! Chicken meatballs and salad!”

I ordered chicken meatballs while Luna-sama had the salad. 

“Let’s dig in! The food in this place is delicious, you know.”

“This is my first time eating at a commoner’s restaurant. But since Kanato-san is the one recommending this place, I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about in terms of this place’s culinary skills.”

Luna-sama said confidently as she dug into her salad without any hesitation. I had already confirmed through my detection skills beforehand that our food wasn’t poisoned. With her hat placed at the corner of the table, Luna-sama chewed her food adorably. Her munching sounds were almost inaudible.

“….Delicious.”

“That’s right. The chicken meatballs are also superb.”

I said as I used a fork to bring the chicken meatball into my mouth. The moment I bit into the meatball, the juices overflowed in my mouth, emitting a rich savory aroma that had been infused with spices and seasonings.

Despite the looming danger from Genesis that had nearly pushed this kingdom to crisis, the town was filled with peace. I liked how peaceful the town was. 

Feeling content, I swallowed the meatball happily. But then, I realized that Luna-sama, who was sitting across from me, seemed to be fidgeting nervously. 

“The chicken meatballs…. Are they that delicious?”

“Yes. They are delicious. Would you like me to order some for you, Luna-sama?”

“I-I can’t possibly eat that much….”

“Ah, then would you like to try mine?”

“….Yes.”

“Here you go.”

I pushed my plate to Luna-sama but then, she shook her head. She didn’t even try to eat it. 

“Hm?”

I looked at her, confused. Luna-sama averted her gaze from me and in a barely audible voice, she said…

“Can you please feed me…..?”

“Huh?!”

 I was left flabbergasted. It was definitely the kind of moment that deserved the ,”HUH?!?!?!?!?!” reaction.

When I widened my eyes in shock, Luna-sama suddenly turned her head down. 

“I’m sorry… Please forget what I said earlier…”

“….”

Luna-sama’s eyes were wet with unshed tears, as if she had committed a grave crime. Looking at how troubled she looked, I tilted my neck slightly to the side. 

One question appeared in my mind. The numerous weird behaviors she had shown me until now…. Everything…

“Luna-sama, I’m sorry. It may be discourteous of me to ask but… Were you like this with your late older brother?”

“….”

Luna-sama trembled. Her body was shaking all over before she slowly nodded her head. 

I see. I get it now.

“I am not fit to be a noble…. I’m disgusting, right? I’ve said many pretentious things as the student council president but in reality… I’m just a narrow-minded person. I’m unworthy of being the student council president. Even now, I still can’t get over my brother’s death yet….”

“Luna-sama…”

Who in the world dares to condemn Luna-sama? I will beat anyone who dares to pulp. 

“Luna-sama.”

“Hm? Eh?! Ah-!”

I stabbed a piece of chicken meatball with my fork and shoved it into Luna-sama’s mouth.”

“Mmm!! Mmmph!!!”

At first, Luna-sama was perplexed, but soon she started savoring the chicken meatball with a blissful expression on her face. Eventually, I withdrew my fork from Luna-sama’s mouth, forming a string of clear saliva that ended up getting stuck to my hand. 

After Luna-sama finished eating, she stared at me with eyes full of emotions. 

“Delicious.”

“I know, right?”

“Umm…. I’m sorry…”

“Please, there’s no need for you to apologize. Luna-sama, you have a painful past behind you and despite that, you still do a great job in uniting the students of Central Magic School together.”

“Kanato…”

“I may not be able to become Luna-sama’s big brother, but I can at least go on dates and talk with you like this. If it’s okay with you, please feel free to continue relying on me for this kind of thing from now on.”

“…Kanato… Kanato… Kanato…”

“Hm?”

Suddenly, Luna-sama began acting strange. She was breathing heavily. She didn’t even bother to hide her excited expression. 

“Kanato-oniisha-“

But Luna-sama’s words were interrupted by someone that forcefully opened the door to the restaurant. 

“ALL OF YOU! GET OUT! This whole restaurant is reserved for Rio-sama’s use!”

“Ri-Rio-sama?!”

“The count who manages the taxes of this shopping district?”

“Oh, crap…”

“He’s been extra peevish lately because his son got expelled from Central Magic School. That’s why he’s going around the shops under his jurisdiction, extorting even more money than before.”

“Scary…”

His son got expelled from Central Magic Academy….

Only one person came to my mind.
