Chapter 5: What Does the Duke Think of the Siblings Who Departed Gallantly?

In the Reception Room Served for Nobility Guests of the Fibel Family.

Elena-sama fainted after receiving an attack from me. 

And…

Six broken ribs. Ruptured organs. Spinal cord injury and so on…..

I had done something that I should never have done to the next in line of the ducal family. 

“CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP!!”

I was sitting on the chair with my head laying low, gripping my head with both of my hands. 

Then, my little sister, Rina, gently stroked my back. 

“It’s alright. I cast a healing spell on Elena-sama so she’ll be fine after resting for a bit.”

“No, that’s not the issue here.”

Right. Thanks to Rina casting a healing spell as a form of first aid, Elena-sama somehow managed to avoid grave injuries. But still, the fact still remained. I had hurt her. A lot.

This sort of crime would be enough to send me to the guillotine. However, it seemed Rina still hadn’t realized how dire our situation was. 

No matter how kind Elena-sama was, if she were to suffer from ruptured organs, six broken ribs and spinal cord injury from being hit by a commoner like me, her parents would definitely get furious.

Am I going to be sent for punishment now…? No, I don’t want to. Who’s going to earn the money to pay the tuition fees for my precious Rina?

While I was busy wallowing in despair, the door opened. The head of the Fibel family, Keltz-sama, entered the room accompanied by a familiar looking maid behind him. 

While stroking his golden beard, Keltz-sama stared at me. 

This man really exuded a tremendous amount of dignity. He wasn’t a duke for name only. 

“Kanato-kun.”

“Yes!!”

“There’s something I’d like to ask.”

“What is it??”

Yeah. I can’t help it. I’m feeling very nervous right now. 

My body was tense from head to toe. 

“Just now, there was someone who tried to assassinate my daughter.”

“Y-Yes?”

Keltz-sama narrowed his eyes. He directed his serious expression toward me. 

“There’s a very high possibility the assassin is still here. Do you have any information we can use to catch the assassin?”

“Umm…”

It seemed Keltz-sama wanted to put the issue where I harmed Elena-sama on hold for now. 

If so, if I play my cards well, I can avoid getting a death sentence here.

“Yes, I do.”

I spoke with great caution.

“Please, do tell us.”

“Umm… Before that, can I please have all the butlers in the mansion to gather in one place?”

“A-All of them?”

“Yes!”

“Hoo… What an interesting thing to ask. Alright. I trust your strength. You’re strong enough to defeat Elena after all. I will gather all the butlers for you.”

“Thank you very much.”

Just as I requested, Keltz-sama gathered all the butlers in the courtyard. 

There were about several dozen of them.

The butlers looked confused, they were murmuring among themselves. It was only natural though. They were suddenly called here after all. 

I stood alongside Keltz-sama, my little sister and the maid. 

Looking at the butlers, I quickly chanted. 

“Pistol.”

Gripping an unmodified pistol, I shot one of them. 

Bang!!

“Argh-!!”

The butler who was shot in the leg fell down, blood flowing from the wound. 

Panic immediately ensued among the other butlers. At the same time, two of them suddenly started to run away. 

They ran incredibly fast but I…

“Sniper Rifle!”

I chanted and an unmodified sniper rifle appeared before me. I quickly brought my eyes to the scope and aimed the rifle at the legs of the two fleeing butlers. 

I fired two shots. 

Bang! Bang!

The bullets hit their knees and they collapsed on the ground while groaning weakly. 

The two butlers were running at a speed that a normal butler couldn’t possibly achieve. They moved really fast, like a spy or assassin that had undergone years of training. 

However, no matter how fast their legs were, my bullets were still much faster. Of course, they wouldn’t know about it. 

All hail modern weaponry.

Keltz-sama looked aghast as he stared at the three fallen butlers. He then shouted.

“Seize all three of them! Quick!!”

In the Reception Room.

“Kanato-kun.”

“Yes.”

“I haven’t tortured the information out of them yet so while the decision hasn’t settled in yet, but based on my long years of experience, it’s highly likely that the three butlers you captured are spies.”

“I am absolutely certain those three are spies.”

“Oh? Then tell me, what makes you so certain?”

“We-Well….”

When I summoned the iron plate to protect Elena-sama, I also took the opportunity to plant a listening device in the assassin’s clothes. 

The guy that failed the assassination immediately went to his two accomplices and spilled all the deeds and personal information. I was able to learn their names from there and so, I asked the other maids about them in secret so I could identify their faces. 

However, there was no way I could tell Keltz-sama that. 

Seeing me hesitating, Keltz-sama stared at me with a serious look on his face. 

“Is it something that’s hard for you to tell me about? Like when you deliberately used a weapon that had been significantly weakened to fight my daughter?”

“-! A-Ahahaha….”

He-He knew… As expected from a duke. He has a keen eye…

“More importantly, how’s Elena-sama’s condition?”

“Hm. Elena should be fine. Rina immediately cast healing magic and we immediately called for the doctor and other medical specialists to confirm that there’s no issue with her.”

“That’s a relief..”

I sighed, feeling relieved when Rina chimed in. 

“Onii-sama was the one that taught me that healing magic!”

She exclaimed excitedly. 

“Ri-Rine, your voice is a bit too loud.”

I gave Rina’s head a hand chop and seeing our interactions, Keltz-sama’s cheeks loosened into a small smile. 

“The two of you are really close, huh?”

He said fondly. 

The mood suddenly lightened up. 

Alright, now that Keltz-sama is in a better mood, this is my chance! Really, I can’t help but to feel uneasy staying in this place. 

“Umm… I think we’ll need to take our leave soon too.”

“Huh? Are you guys leaving already?”

“Yes… We have an errand to do.”

“E-Errand, you say?”

Seemingly puzzled, Keltz-sama asked again but then, Rina suddenly turned dejected. 

“Onii-sama, are you going to go hunt monsters again?”

She asked. 

“We-Well, yeah. I’m thinking of going to the guild hall tonight.”

“I’m sorry… You always work hard to earn money for me and yet… I only cause you nothing but trouble…”

“No. It’s not like that. Well then, shall we go?”

“Yes.”

I nodded to Keltz-sama the maid. We were about to leave the reception room but then…

“Wait a minute!!!”

Kelz-sama suddenly called out to me.

“Are you…. Are you really sure about this?!”

“Pardon?”

“I really don’t mind it if you want to go home. I really don’t. But!! Don’t you have something you want to tell me?? Do you really think it’s fine to leave without saying anything to me first??”

“……”

I knew it. He’s furious… 

This man looked like he was excellent at his job but he also gave off the impression of a doting parent after all. 

And so, I told him.

“I apologize for the cruel things I’ve done to Elena-sama.”

I bowed my head.

“”-!!!””

Without looking at the duke or the maid, I raised my head and took Rina’s head before walking away briskly.

Keltz and the Maid’s Side

Several minutes had passed since Kanato left. However, Keltz and the maid were still in the reception room. 

“What a wonderful commoner!!!!!”

“Indeed. I was also deeply moved by him.”

“He taught my daughter the taste of defeat. He saved her from an assassin, captured the spies and the assassins lurking in the mansion and then left without asking for anything in return….”

“He gallantly left in order to earn money for Rina-san’s tuition fees… Even though he’s a commoner with a rundown house….”

The maid shed tears, deeply moved at Kanato’s pure heart. 

“Usually, people would be expecting gratitude in return for their favors. Either they will ask for wealth or power. However, that man….”

“Rather than asking for a reward, he was more concerned about Elena-sama instead.”

“Yeah. My daughter charged him, completely unaware that her own life was in danger. However, that man completely turned the tide and defeated my daughter fair and square… He’s truly a frightening man. He must’ve some sort of ulterior motive, right? Maybe…. He intends to speak ill of our family in public? Maybe he’s going to tell the public that even though he saved Elena’s life, but our family refused to give him any reward in return?”

“-! That person is very clever so if he does have evil intention, that scenario is highly likely to happen…””

“Hahaha…! He dares to underestimate the head of the Fibel family…  What an audacious man he is then! I wonder, how much does he intend to test me before he’s satisfied?”

Keltz clenched his fist tightly, looking clearly frustrated at his own shortcomings before he looked at the maid. 

“Hannah!”

“Yes, Sir.”

“We definitely mustn’t let those two escape, especially Kanato. Even though he’s a commoner, but he’s someone that we must bring to our side no matter what.”

“I absolutely agree, Sir.”

“I can only hope the foolish nobles and royals in the kingdom remain ignorant of that man’s talent.”

“Before they find out, we must….”

“H. By the way, Hannah, I heard you’ve been to their home?”

“Yes.”

“How was it?”

Upon hearing Keltz’s question, Hannah suddenly blushed.

“The dish called beef bowl that was served to me was really delicious…..”

She said shyly.

“Be-Beef bowl?! What’s that? I have tasted delicacies from all over the world. Through the mountains, through the seas, I’ve tasted everything and yet… I’ve never heard of beef bowls before. Can you tell me more about this dish called beef bowl?”

Elena was talking in her sleep while fidgeting on her bed.
