Chapter 26: The Party Organized by the Royal Family and an Incident

A few days later. 

I arrived at the venue for the party organized by the royal family. This party was a large-scale event held only once a year. The purpose of this party was mainly to bring together the royal family and the upper-class nobles so they could deepen their relationship through this party. Hence why, the security was really tight in here. No one was allowed inside except those authorized by the royal family. 

However, according to Keltz-sama, both me and Rina had been granted special permission to join this party.

At first, I was puzzled. But then, Keltz-sama then explained there was one group that planned on doing something sinister at this party. Since Keltz-sama had gone out of his way to ask for my help specifically, I couldn’t bear to refuse him. I would be tarnishing his pride if I did that. And so, I agreed to help him, albeit gingerly. After all, Keltz-sama was our benefactor. He was the one paying for our tuition fees. 

Since it could be dangerous, I told my little sister to stay at home instead but she was being very stubborn. She usually always listened to me but for some reason, she insisted on coming with me. She begged me to take her with me so I reluctantly agreed to let her accompany me. 

However, we were commoners. We were not the main actors here. We simply came here to support Elena-sama. 

“Onii-sama… Thi-This is amazing…”

“Yeah. I’ve never been to such a luxurious party like this before too.”

The floor was covered with what seemed like expensive Persian carpets and the venue was decorated with top quality furniture. 

On the ceiling, there were chandeliers emitting warm colors that didn’t hurt one’s eyes thanks to the usage of magic stones. Calming music flowed throughout the venue and people wearing stylish clothes were dancing on the floor. Just from the quality of their clothes alone was enough to tell me that they were indeed someone from the upper-class of high society. 

Rina was wearing a maid outfit while I was wearing a butler outfit. We were gathering in the corner with other servants, watching Elena-sama from afar. 

Elena-sama was talking with a tough-looking gentleman. 

“How nostalgic. We used to go to the empire together, fighting fierce battles against the Demon King’s army but look at me now. Now, I’m just a normal student.”

“It goes without saying that Elena-sama’s strength is unparalleled in the whole kingdom. Ah, I want to go back to those days! Where we would race through the battlefields together!”

“To possess both strength and beauty…. Elena-sama is truly a living national treasure!”

“Ahaha!~ Stop it. I’m just an ordinary woman.”

“-?! Elena-sama…. That manner of speaking… Could it be, there’s someone in your heart?”

“Tha-Tha-Tha-Tha-Tha-That’s….”

“This reaction…! To think Elena-sama, strong as she is, can give out the expression of a maiden in love!!”

Suddenly, one of the rugged men shouted loudly, which in turn caused more rugged noble men to gather around Elena-sama. 

Elena-sama casually dealt with all of them, although she had a troubled expression on her face. 

Seeing that, my little sister came closer to me. 

“I wonder who the man in Elena-sama’s heart could be?~”

My little sister said in a tone that clearly showed she was teasing me. Not to mention, she kept nudging my side with her elbow. 

“How am I supposed to know? Maybe some prince from another kingdom?”

“Haaa… Onii-sama… You can be so foolish sometimes….”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

I tilted my head to the side, confused and my little sister sighed deeply in return. 

However, soon after, she clung to my arm. 

“It’s alright. Please remain thick headed for now.”

She said as she rubbed her head against my arm. 

Then, someone appeared from between the large doors at the venue. 

Not one, but two beautiful girls with pink hair. One had short hair that reached to her shoulders while the other one had long, flowy hair. 

The one with long hair must be the older sister. Both of them were wearing equally beautiful dresses. 

“It’s the First Princess, Rhea-sama, and the Second Princess, Selene-sama.”

“So beautiful… I can’t believe the day has come for a mere servant like me to be able to see the two princesses in person…”

“The First Princess is engaged to another royal and the Second Princess is engaged to Harry-sama, right?”

“Haa… I long to be like them…”

The servants beside me muttered. They were feeling deeply impressed by the two princesses. However, I didn’t share the same sentiment. 

I frowned. Why? Because the name of a man I didn’t like was mentioned. The said man was in the middle of a conversation with the Second Princess, Selene-sama. 

I didn’t know what they were talking about but he seemed to be engaging in an exciting conversation with the two princesses. 

After a while, Harry finally finished speaking with the princesses. He glanced around and our eyes suddenly met. 

He narrowed his eyes into a glare and quickly made his way over to me. 

“I thought I’ve seen you somewhere but turns out, it’s the commoner from the Central Magic School.”

“It’s been a while.”

“Yeah, it’s been a while indeed. It’s been a while for your imouto-chan too.”

“….”

Ignoring Harry’s greeting, Rina hid behind me and glared at him from my shoulder. 

“Ahahahaha! Rina-chan, right? For someone like you to ignore the greeting from the duke’s family…That’s not good, you know? Hey, are you even teaching your little sister manners properly?”

Harry snickered as he glared at me. 

“She has received a lot of guidance from other people as well.”

“I see. Then if you ever need help, just let me know. Bern-“

“I will never need help. Please, no need to concern yourself with me.”

I said to Harry with a cold expression on my face, returning the glare. Then, Harry inched closer to me. 

“Don’t get too cocky. I have plans. I’m going to become someone even greater than now. With just a single word from me, I can easily kill you and your entire family. I will spare Rina-chan though. There are no girls as cute and beautiful as her among the commoners. I’ll be sure to work her hard in various ways~”

Clenching my fist, I retorted back in a low voice. 

“Harry-sama.”

“Hm?”

“Sure, you can kill with words alone but I can kill with my own power.”

Upon hearing my words, Harry grimaced in response. 

“YOU INSOLENT FOOLLLL!!!”

He shouted and grabbed my collar. But, at the same time…

“What on earth are you doing?!”

On the other side, a middle-aged nobleman who bore striking similarity to Harry shouted even louder than Harry at Keltz-sama. 

Keltz-sama didn’t look perturbed though. 

“I don’t have the slightest idea what makes you so agitated though.”

Keltz-sama said calmly.

“The rumors about you throwing money away to slaves have spread everywhere! Because of you, the slaves working for other companies and nobles are not working properly!!”

“It seems you’ve misunderstood something.”

“What?!”

The middle-aged nobleman who bore striking resemblance to Harry looked confused. 

“Father..”

Harry said. He released me and turned his attention to his own father. 

Meanwhile, Keltz-sama remained unperturbed. He didn’t even seem to care about people’s gazes. 

“I remunerate the slaves who have worked diligently for me in the form of salaries and bonuses. I’m not throwing my money away. Slaves who have done excellent jobs deserve appropriate remuneration.”

However, Harry’s father refused to budge. He stood on his ground stubbornly. 

“Just where on earth do you find such nonsense?! Slaves are objects! We use them up and when they die, we just need to buy new ones!”

“There isn’t much that slaves who are exploited their whole life without receiving anything in return can do.”

“Huh??”

“I believe you’re aware that my slaves are far superior than others.”

“….”

“Gathering a huge quantity of inferior slaves serves no purpose. You need to come up with ways to motivate them. Why don’t you try giving proper remuneration to the slaves who are working hard? Then perhaps, your company might grow bigger than my own Fibel Company. After all, the Percy Company is on the verge of bankruptcy, right?”

Keltz-sama spoke with so much sarcasm to provoke Harry’s father. Of course, Harry’s father looked absolutely furious.

“NO MATTER WHAT, I WILL NEVER GIVE A SINGLE PENNY TO THOSE SLAVES!!”

Harry’s father yelled, his face contorted hideously in anger. His breathing became ragged as he continued on.

“As I said earlier, slaves are objects to be used! It is far more efficient if we abuse them, instill fear deep into their bones and force them to work to their death!! They are expendables and there are plenty of replacements, so why should I spend my money on them?!”

Looking at Harry’s father’s furious look, Keltz-sama grinned widely. 

“Pfft… Ahahaha…. Ahahahahahaha!!”

“What’s so funny?!”

“Henry-san.”

“Huh??”

“Times are changing. If you fail to follow along with the tide, you’ll get swept up and disappear into the ocean.”

“What did you say?! You are the one who will perish!!”

Harry’s father screamed. 

Everyone, including the First Princess and the Second Princess stared at Keltz-sama and Henry. The two seemed to be breaking into cold sweats. 

And at that moment…

A massive explosion occurred from the direction of the window.

“”-!!!””

The force of the explosion was so strong that it blew the venue of the party, including the tables, decorations and the chairs. 

“Wha-What’s happening?”

“An explosion?!”

“This is a party hosted by the royal family! Impossible!”

“What on earth is happening here?!”

The nobles and the servants spiraled into a whirlwind of confusion. The venue of the party was filled with smoke from the explosion and amidst all of the chaos, the two princesses also glanced around nervously.

Then, suddenly, a large, axe-like weapon imbued with magic flew at high speed towards the neck of the first princess, Rhea-sama.
