Chapter 24: What Is on Luna’s Mind When She Looks at Kanato?

After School. 

Due to Luna-sama’s unilateral declaration, I became a target of surveillance.

In the first place, because Central Magic School was filled with children of prestigious families, it was only natural that some political transactions between nobles would be carried out in the school as well. However, since this underhanded transaction might pose a threat to the royal family, a new system was introduced to the school. The student council was allowed to monitor the so-called suspicious individuals.

And this was what Luna-sama was trying to do to me. 

At first, I protested. However, she was being very adamant about it. 

Elena-sama, Jeff-sama and Mia-sama had other stuff to attend to so they left first, leaving me with Luna-sama and my little sister. 

We were walking together through the school’s main gate (with me in the middle). Normally, the student council would make a request to the school and the school would dispatch a special party to surveil the suspicious individuals or they would just use the royal family’s secret units. However, it seemed Luna-sama would personally monitor me herself. 

“Hmmm~ Hmm hmmm~”

“Rina, why are you so cheery?”

“Because~ Luna-sama is coming home with us~”

“To be precise, she’s here to keep an eye on us…”

“Hehe~”

Rina looked really happy despite my exasperation.

Luna-sama was listening to the conversation between me and my little sister in an extremely calm expression on her face. 

Now then, what should we have for dinner tonight? I’ve been so busy lately so I don’t have many ingredients in hand…

At Our Rundown House

“Oh! Kanato! There you are! Here, take this!”

“Brown-san? How unusual to see you here today.”

The person calling out to me was my neighbor, Brown-san. Brown-san worked as a fisherman. He was the person that told me about the King Octopus, the monster that I had hunted before (episode 1). He was always busy so I didn’t get to see him often. 

Maybe he’s taking the day off today?

Brown-san then handed me a plate filled with fish filets. 

“Huh? Thi-This is…?”

“Well, you see~ I tried following your advice in aging the fish and they turned out really delicious! I made these using high quality fishes that those high class nobles like!”

“Ooooh… But, is it fine for me to receive something so valuable like this?”

“It’s fine! Whenever I see you working hard for your little sister, I always feel like cheering you on! Kanato, you’re definitely the greatest among the young ones here!”

“….Thank you very much.”

“Ahahaha! Well, you know what they say, good men attract good women!”

Brown-san, with his bald head shining against the sun, glanced at Luna-sama as he said so. 

Hey, you’re being rude, you know? The woman in front of you is the daughter of a duke, you know? Well, I can see he doesn’t mean any harm though. 

I thanked Brown-san and went inside our home. 

“Thi-This is a… House? It’s more like a stable…”

Luna-sama’s eyes widened. Her mouth was hanging open from shock. 

“Umm… Luna-sama, as I thought, maybe it’s better if you don’t follow us inside. My house is very dirty after all.”

“…Do you really live here?”

“Ye-Yes…”

I answered, feeling guilty at the state of our house. I could see Luna-sama staring at Rina sympathetically. 

However, Rina wasn’t even the least fazed. In fact, she didn’t seem to realize the sympathetic gaze from Luna-sama at all. Rina’s sole focus was on the plate of fish I had. She was even drooling. 

“*slurp*…. O-Onii-shama….”

“Yeah?”

“We-We can have sushi tonight, right?”

“That’s right. It’s been a while since we last had sushi, huh? How about having sushi and miso soup for dinner?”

“Yayyyy!! Onii-sama, I love you so muchhhh!!”

Rina was jumping with joy while Luna-sama looked flabbergasted as she watched Rina hopping around in front of our dilapidated house. 

Well, Rina really loves sushi after all.

“This food is… Sushi?”

Luna-sama stared at the sushi I had prepared with a puzzled expression on her face. 

“Onii-shama…. Can I start eating now? I… I really can’t hold it in anymore.”

“Go ahead. We have a lot of fish today so feel free to eat to your heart’s content. I will make a lot of sushi for you.”

“Thank you for the food!!!”

Rina dipped the sushi into the soy sauce at lightning speed and brought it to her mouth. 

“SO DELICIOUSSSS!! Aaaahh…. I’m so happy….”

Rina rubbed her cheeks together and closed her eyes, savoring the taste of sushi blissfully. It made me happy to see her enjoying her food. 

While I was making sushi, I smiled as I stared at Rina. BUt then, I realized that Luna-sama had been staring at me. 

“Umm… There’s no poison in it but if you’re still worried, you don’t need to eat it. I will eat it.”

“You’ve gone out of your way to prepare the meal for me too so it’s not polite if I refuse it. I’m aware that there’s no poison in it. Therefore, I will eat it.”

Following Rina’s footsteps, Luna-sama also dipped the sushi in soy sauce before putting it into her mouth. 

A few seconds passed and then…

“-!!!!”

Her eyes widened and the upper half of body twitched. 

“Lu-Luna-sama?!”

I called her name, feeling worried about her, but…

“So-So-So-So-So-So…”

“So….?”

“So delicioussssssss…..”

Luna-sama’s cheeks turned red and she started eating the remaining sushi with so much enthusiasm. Both Rina and Luna-sama were amazing. They kept on asking for more and of course, I fulfilled all of their demands readily.

In the end, they ate so much hand-rolled sushi that I was only left with plain rice and miso soup for dinner. 

“….Kanato-san, I’m sorry for eating your portion as well.”

“No, it’s alright. I’m glad you enjoyed the food.”

“It seems… I’ve truly misunderstood you.”

“Huh?”

“While it is true that your existence is filled with so many mysterious but…. I know you’re a good older brother at least. That being said, I still don’t trust you though.”

“No~ You’re too kind. I’m just a useless older brother who only causes trouble for his little sister. Ahahaha~”

Upon hearing my slightly embarrassed response, Luna-sama’s demeanor suddenly changed. 

“…..I’ll be going home today. The sushi was truly delicious. I’ll be sure to pay the price of the sushi tomorrow.”

Luna-sama thanked us before leaving our house. However, she looked a bit dejected when I saw her leaving through the front door. It was strange. She had been so excited when she ate dinner with us before but now she looked kind of down.

 After leaving the dilapidated house, Luna whispered quietly under her breath. 

“Onii-sama… Onii-sama… Onii-sama…”

She repeated the same words over and over again with tears streaming down her face. 

Onii-sama. 

Luna was the eldest daughter of Duke Lenox. However, she actually had a big brother. A big brother who had already left for the afterlife. Her big brother tragically lost his life after being attacked by a mysterious organization called ‘Genesis’.

Luna greatly admired her big brother, so much so that Luna wanted to bear his child if only they weren’t biologically related. 

Her big brother was always there to protect her.

There was a phrase he used to say whenever someone praised him for being a good brother.

Watching those two siblings interact made Luna feel uneasy but upon hearing Kanato’s words just a moment ago, Luna immediately felt an excruciating pain in her heart. 

Unable to stop herself from crying, Luna immediately left the rundown house. She couldn’t afford to cry in front of Kanato and his little sister. After all, as the eldest daughter of Duke Lennox, she had to behave with the utmost grace. Her family held a great influence over the administration and judiciary of this kingdom and as a member of Lennox family, of course she had to appear impeccable.
