Chapter 22: The Pride of a Noble

Jeff Side.

Jeff and Mia were staring at the remains of the exploded Red Dragon and the unconscious nobles. They had a deep frown on their faces. 

“Jeff-sama… Are you alright?”

“Fufu~ Rather than worrying about me… Mia-chan, how are you feeling? You used quite a bit of magic, didn’t you?”

“….”

Their faces were paler than usual. Although their conditions weren’t severe enough to the point of suffering from magic exhaustion syndrome, they still had used a considerable amount of magic in one go. And so, the two of them were sitting down, resting to regain their energy back. 

However, despite the exhaustion on his body, Jeff mustered all of his strength and stood up. 

“Jeff-sama?! Where are you going?!”

Mia asked in surprise and Jeff gently stroked her head.

“I have something I need to tell to the noble who values their pride so badly.”

“I-I see!” 

And so, Jeff continued walking forward, leaving her behind. Mia waved him goodbye with a cheerful expression on her face now. 

Jeff walked toward the unconscious nobles. Rina and Luna were there, giving first-aid treatment to the nobles. 

Jeff kept moving his head while shaking his head, seemingly perplexed at the situation, when a certain unconscious man came into his view. 

Jeff bent down in front of the said man and smiled. 

『Don’t get cocky, you commoner! Do you even understand what you’re talking about?! You’re basically tarnishing our pride as nobles!』

Right. Those were the words uttered by this man, who was now bleeding from his ears. Just a moment ago, this man was still looking down on Kanato, saying all sorts of terrible things to Kanato. 

The man had now fainted. He looked absolutely pathetic. Even a slave who couldn’t use any magic could easily kill this man right now. Just one stab into this man’s neck would do. 

Jeff leaned down, closing his face to the man’s face and whispered into his ear. 

“Just what exactly is this pride you keep brandishing off? If pride means looking down on other people just to feed off your superiority complex then…”

Jeff paused, taking a deep breath. He glared at the unconscious man as if he was no better than trash. 

“Then you should just feed that pride away to stray dogs instead.”

Jeff scoffed. His eyebrows furrowed together as he remembered his past. 

Of course, the unconscious man showed no reaction to Jeff’s words. 

“This is amazing! I didn’t know a Level 5 can suffer from magic exhaustion!”

“…This is my first time seeing it too.”

“This is Luna-sama’s first too?! Incredible!!”

“I will give you my magic so let’s treat them quickly.”

“Huh?! Luna-sama, you’re going to help us?”

“Of course. Look around you. Rina-san’s magic won’t be enough to treat this many people.”

“Ooh…. Thank you so much!!”

Jeff glanced at Rina, who was busy treating Geese. A smile appeared on his face. 

Then, by the time he realized it, Mia was already by his side, staring at Rina with a warm gaze. 

Seeing the warm expression on Mia’s face, Jeff asked..

“Do you like Rina-chan?”

Mia nodded at Jeff’s question and shyly murmured. 

“….There’s nothing sadder than a cute commoner girl.”

“….Well, yeah. There are a lot of bad men pretending to be gentlemen just to devour cute girls like her in this world.”

Mia glared at Jeff, who suddenly burst out laughing.

Jeff and Mia continued their conversation while waiting for Rina and Luna to finish treating the injured nobles.

“This is the first time we’ve been alone and walking like this.”

Right now, I was walking alone with Elena-sama. According to the information from the student council, the musk deer should be near this rocky mountain. 

I tried to maintain my composure as hard as I could, but occasionally, the sensation of Elena-sama’s soft arm brushing against mine and the scent of her enticing pheromones kept hitting my nostrils. It was really hard for me to focus. I kept finding myself enthralled by her charms.

Elena-sama puffed her cheeks a bit, seemingly sulking at me. But eventually, she stopped sulking. Her cheeks suddenly dyed in pink.

“Kanato.”

“Hm?”

“Thanks…”

“Huh? Elena-sama? Why are you thanking me?”

“Because you’re always helping me…”

“No! In fact, I’m the one who has been receiving Elena-sama’s help… Especially regarding the school’s tuition fees..”

My mouth was hanging open. I couldn’t close it. As for Elena-sama, her eyes had turned red like an apple. She seemed to be trembling even.

Elena-sama suddenly lost the strength in her legs. She stumbled toward me.

“Watch out!”

I shouted, catching her and holding her close so she wouldn’t fall.

“Elena-sama! Are you alright..?!”

I fell to my knees, falling in despair upon seeing the ashes of numerous musk deer. 

Next to me, Elena-sama laughed instead. 

“Ufufufu~ Judging from the condition of the musk deer, it seems the Red Dragon had taken out the musk deer even before the quest even started.”

“So… This quest is impossible to be cleared from the beginning.”

“That’s right.”

Elena-sama giggled at me. This was the first time I ever saw Elena-sama looking this cheerful. 

Seeing how dejected I was, Elena-sama reached her hand out to me.

“Kanato.”

“Yeah?”

“Let’s go back. Everyone is waiting for us.”

ELena-sama looked at me warmly. Her cheeks were still slightly tinted in pink. This version of her was a stark contrast to the Elena-sama I knew at school. 

Deep in my mind, I started to yearn to see more of this version of her. 

“Yes!”

Grabbing the duke’s daughter’s hand, I stood up from the ground.

Harry smiled as he rubbed the old scar on his neck. 

“My adorable Elena-chan and that garbage commoner… I will never let  the two of you be together.”
