Chapter 20: Getting Swallowed Up

The muscled man triggered the Red Dragon, causing the dragon to slam its massive tail onto the ground. The impact from the dragon’s tail created an earthquake before the dragon leaped up into the sky. 

“What an incredible tremor! Everyone! Watch out for the falling trees!”

Elena-sama shouted as she drew her sword out to cut down the collapsing trees and incoming rocks. 

“Shield!”

Jeff-sama immediately cast a barrier after he regained his composure. 

“Jeff-sama! I will support you! Haaaaahhh!!”

Mia-sama applied her enhancement magic to Jeff-sama’s barrier, which in turn increased the coverage of the barrier. The barrier was big enough to envelop all of us now. 

Now that we were all well protected inside Jeff-sama’s barrier, Elena-sama sighed in relief. 

But then, Rina trembled. She looked pale as she pointed upwards. 

“Tha-That’s… The Red Dragon…”

Drawn by my little sister’s voice, we all looked up into the sky. 

There, we saw a big Red Dragon shrouded in red, glowing scales. The dragon soared through the sky with flames sprouting from its mouth.

All around us, we could see flocks of wyvern following suit. The wyverns were glaring at us—or rather, at the muscled man who had just unleashed that blade of steel attack. 

The murderous gazes from the wyverns were sharper than anything I had ever seen. Even the ferocity of the Iron Dragon I had defeated before fell short compared to the wyverns. Not to mention, the wyverns were significantly bigger than the Iron Dragon.

The wyvern’s massive wings seemed to move slowly on a single glance, but the wind generated from those wings were ferocious enough to knock down trees and grass from their roots. 

“Everyone! Don’t move! We mustn’t provoke the Red Dragon!”

I shouted at the four of them and they all nodded silently.

“KIIIUUUUUUU!!”

Roaring, the Red Dragon flew towards the four man party, capturing the muscled man with its massive claws before fleeing.

“Wha-What?! You bastard! Let me go!”

“Geese!”

“Geese-sama!”

“Geese-senpai!”

It seemed the muscled man’s name was Geese. The remaining party members of Geese shouted his name. They immediately assumed an attacking position, ready to help him. It was clear to see that they didn’t understand the gravity of the situation.

“Please stop! The Red Dragon is already aggravated! If you provoke it even more, the damage will truly be irreversible!”

The three of them (two men and one woman) turned their heads to look at me. Upon seeing me, they immediately furrowed their eyebrows.

“Who do you think you are?! A commoner dares to order a noble?!”

“The audacity! Stop interfering with nobles! How extremely impudent!”

“Goodness, you’re really an insolent commoner who doesn’t know your own place!”

The three of them snickered before they immediately rushed toward the Red Dragon.

Trying to suppress my growing frustration, I sighed deeply. 

Then, with a serious expression on her face, Elena-sama asked me a question.

“Kanato, what should I-… No. What should we do?”

Upon hearing her questions, the others also turned their attention to me. They were looking at me expectantly. 

Indeed. This was definitely an unexpected turn of events. I had assumed everyone had some degree of knowledge about the Red Dragon’s behavior but it seemed I was wrong. 

I desperately wrecked my brain, trying to come up with a plan that could fix this unexpected outcome and finally, an idea came to my mind.

“Let’s use those people who are fighting the Red Dragon as decoys.”

“Decoys?”

“Yes. We will finish the dragon off when the dragon is exhausted. But for that, I have one request.”

“Hm. Speak.”

“To defeat the Red Dragon, I will need to use my attack magic. However, the area of effect from my magic is pretty big so the people around the Red Dragon will get severely injured as well. Those nobles won’t listen to me. That’s why, Elena-sama, as the eldest daughter of the Fibel family, I hope you can give them the order to retreat at the right time-“

“Unfortunately, that cannot be done.”

“Pardon?”

Elena-sama immediately refused my request without any hesitation. I stood there, dumbfounded when Elena-sama explained her reasoning.

After hearing Elena-sama’s dignified speech, I was rendered speechless. 

“In that case then can you please be the one to fight the Red Dragon? However, our objective is simply to wear down the Red Dragon. Please avoid getting gravely injured by the dragon, just focus on wearing it down. Then, when I give you the signal, can you please retreat immediately?”

We didn’t want to cause any significant damage but right now, we didn’t have any other options. We had to do what we must do.

While I was pondering to know if there was any other choice, Jeff-sama called out to me.

“Yes?”

“What about me and Mia-chan? Should we just stay back and cast a barrier from here?”

The two of them awaited my instructions. Their expression finally brightened. They looked more confident now. 

I pointed to the Red Dragon who was still in the middle of a fierce battle with the other party. 

“When the Red Dragon becomes tired and lands on the ground, can you two please wrap the dragon with a barrier?”

“…With Mia-chan’s help, it might be possible. However, the dragon is so big. I don’t think we can create a strong barrier.”

“That’s okay. It’s already more than enough.”

Jeff-sama and Mia-sama nodded. Then, it was Rina’s turn to wait for my instruction.

“Onii-sama, what should I do?”

“Rina, I want you to use your attack magic to take care of the wyverns coming this way.”

“Understood!”

My little sister was nodding enthusiastically when suddenly, the enraged roar from the Red Dragon could be heard all the way here.

“KIIIUUUUUUU!!”

“I’m a Level 5! If you don’t want to die, you better let Geese go and scram!!”

“Ahaha! Geese-sama! Fear not! I can bring this wyvern with one shot of my attack magic!”

“Geese-senpai! I’m coming to help you! HAAA!!”

The other party members were busy fighting the Red Dragon and the flocks of wyvern around it. As I observed their fight, I let out a deep sigh. 

Elena-sama seemed to be sharing the same sentiment as me too because she was staring at them with a somewhat pessimistic expression. 

The magic power of that party was undoubtedly strong. I couldn’t deny that. Each of them were individually strong. However, they didn’t have good coordinations. Considering the characteristic and behavior patterns of the Red Dragon, the results were as clear as a day. 

“KIUUUUUU!!”

While all three of them were busy fighting, the Red Dragon was starting to bring the man named Geese into its blazing mouth. 

“Geese!!”

“Geese-sama!!”

“Geese-senpai!!”
