Chapter 11: Duel Match

Jeff-sama and Mia-sama invited me to join them in the cafeteria. I originally planned on eating in the bathroom, just like what I used to do during high school in my previous life. However, since the two of them were kind enough to invite me along, I decided to accept their kindness instead. 

“Wow~ It’s such a lovely day today, isn’t it?~ The warm sunlight is shining upon the beautiful Mia, just like my heart~ And of course, on Kanato too~”

Somehow, after dancing with me, Jeff-sama seemed to be in a great mood. His footsteps were significantly lighter. 

Nonetheless, this school was really luxurious and gorgeous. The interior of the building reminded me of a beautiful middle-age church with intricate decorations. 

The moment we emerged from the grandiose medieval-like building, we were welcomed with the sight of a beautiful garden decorated with pristine white marbles. I could see some gazebo made from marble and tall stones in the garden. Various brightly colored flowers were facing the sun, tended to by what I assume to be the gardener of the school. Some of the gardeners were trimming the bushes, some watering the flowers. 

It didn’t take long for us to reach the cafeteria. There, I saw some familiar people waving at us.

“Onii-sama!!”

Rina called out to me loudly. Beside her, Elena-sama was staring at us. She looked as graceful as ever. 

I breathed a sigh of relief upon finding someone I knew in this cafeteria. 

The three of us took a seat on their table. However, for some reason, our surroundings suddenly became noisy with people murmuring among themselves. 

“Look, look… The commoner siblings are eating with Elena-sama.”

“Even though Rina usually eats alone… But look at her now, she’s eating with a high class noble that we can’t even get close to…”

“Is this okay?? Don’t you think this is unacceptable too??”

“Seriously?? Who are they even?”

“That Rina… I guess she’s starting to get full of herself just because she’s a bit cute and her chests are big.”

Rina mainly received hostile glares from the girls while almost everyone else stared daggers at me. 

Under this much pressure from everyone around, even the magnificent lunch didn’t look appetizing to me. 

And it seemed the voices of people looking down on us had reached Elena-sama’s ears as well. She shot a fierce glare to everyone and almost immediately, the cafeteria fell silent. Each person returned their attention back to their meal.

Trying to distract myself from the uncomfortable situation, I brought a topic I deemed as appropriate. 

“So… Jeff-sama, do you know Elena-sama?”

In which Elena-sama responded…

“Jeff’s father is a count but he’s a very talented man who manages several businesses in an unconventional manner. My father relies on Jeff’s father a lot.”

I see. Like father, like son then.

“But!~ This is the first time we ever have a meal together at school like this~ Ahahaha~”

Jeff=sama cheerfully added. Mia-sama, who was sitting next to him, also nodded. 

If that’s the case then why are we gathering here?

I couldn’t help but to ponder. There must be some sort of purpose behind this. 

While I was pondering, a servant carrying a wagon loaded with appetizing dishes arrived. The servant then began serving the food onto the table.

Just from a single glance alone, I knew the dishes must’ve tasted delicious.

Anyway, let’s eat first.

Eating a lot of delicious food is crucial in building strength after all. 

All of us said our blessing for the food before digging in. 

Despite feeling a bit concerned with the gazes from those around us, I still put a sandwich into my mouth. Rina also began eating her salad. 

The dressing got on Rina’s mouth. Mia-sama quickly wiped my little sister’s mouth with a napkin upon seeing it. 

“Rina-san, don’t eat like that.”

“Fu-Fueh??”

“The food won’t run away. Eat slowly, okay?”

“Ye-Yesh! Mmnh! Thank you very much, umm…?”

“I’m Mia.”

“Mia-sama!”

A baron’s daughter readily wiped the mouth of a mere commoner. 

Rina was staring at Mia-sama in astonishment. She was enthralled by Mia-sama. 

It was quite a surreal sight to see. 

As for Elena-sama, she alternated her gaze between Mia-sama and Rina before she nodded in satisfaction and continued her meal. 

“My apologies, Mia-sama. I should’ve taught her manners more properly….”

“This kind of thing can happen even to the best of us. Please, don’t worry about it.”

Mia-sama said while giving Rina a gentle smile. 

We then enjoyed the rest of our meal peacefully and went on to have some tea together. 

Of course, Elena-sama naturally steered our conversation right to the main topic. 

“Rina’s big brother.”

“Yes?”

“There’s something you wish to know, right?”

Elena-sama gave me a meaningful look.

“…….Yes.”

“I gathered all of you here for a reason. There’s only one reason. In this school, there’s-“

Right when Elena-sama was about to explain, someone suddenly came to interrupt and cut her off. 

“Elena-sama!! Just what on earth is going on here?!”

A man with brown hair protested. His eyebrows were furrowed together as he stared at me with disdain. 

Jeff-sama narrowed his eyes, sending the brown haired men an icy chill glare. 

“Ooh… If it isn’t Bern Graham, the head of the Central Magic School’s Disciplinary Committee?”

The man named Bern clenched his fist in return. 

“Jeff Elgin… The eldest son of a count who only cares about making money and doesn’t even have a shred of dignity as a noble.”

Bern’s words were full of venom. Mia-sama immediately stood up and responded in a tone as cold as ice. 

“Bern-sama, can you please mind your words? Jeff-sama and the Elgin family are not the sort of people you can look down upon.”

“What are you talking about when you guys are dining together with filthy commoners? To lower your own reputation out of your own volition, I expect nothing less from the Elgin family! Ahahaha!!”

The man named Bern glared at Jeff-sama, clearly provoking Jeff-sama. 

And then, he continued on.

“ELena-sama. Your existence is indispensable for this kingdom. Your beauty, strength and wisdom are not only popular within the country but also among various other nations and races. For someone like you to be seen with a bunch of commoners like this… You’re not only disrupting the public morals but you might also shake the very foundation of this school!”

This man spoke with great vigor, so much so that the veins on his temple were bulging out. He occasionally cast a glance at Rina. This part of him really made me mad. 

As for Elena-sama, she didn’t say anything in return. She only closed her eyes, taking deep breaths and letting it out repeatedly. 

It was Jeff-sama that spoke against this Bern guy. 

“Bern, you’ve got it all wrong.”

“Huh??”

“Everything you just said were all your personal opinions~ There’s no fact in it. You only spouted shallow nonsense without knowing anything about this commoner… My, now I understand why the Graham family has fallen so low~”

“What did you say?! Weak commoners like them have no purpose in life! Their only meaning in life is when we, nobles, control them and give them a job to do! Didn’t you know that a first-year only got the first rank because she was lucky?!”

Bern retorted, looking very agitated. 

Rina’s expression gradually darkens with each word Bern spouted. She looked upset. In fact, I could see her trembling as she cast her gaze down. 

Finally, Elena-sama opened her mouth to speak.

“He’s not wrong. The vast majority of commoners are weak since they cannot use magic. As for Rina, she might not be able to stand a chance against you too, given that you are the head of the Disciplinary Committee.”

“That’s right! Ah, what wise and beautiful words. I expect nothing less from you, Elena-sama!”

Pleased to know his opinion was being supported by Elena-sama, Bern crossed his arm and puffed his chest pompously.

However, Elena-sama’s expression soon changed. 

“But, the man glaring at you right now… This commoner called Kanato, he’s an exception. You are no match for Kanato.”

“Pa-Pardon??”

Bern let out a stupid sounding noise as he stared at me incredulously. 

“Pfft! Hahahahaha! You think I will lose against a poor commoner like him?? Elena-sama, what on earth are you talking about??”

“Bern, you cannot win.”

“-!!”

Growing agitated, Bern approached me. 

“You! Do you think you can beat me?? For your information, I’m the head of the Disciplinary Committee and I’m a level 4! So?? Do you think you can win against me??”

He was speaking in a low voice and his gaze was full of disdain. 

However, none of that matters right now. 

“Umm… Bern-sama.”

“Huh?”

I have something I’d like you to apologize for.”

“Apologize?? Me??”

“Yes, because…”

I took a deep breath to suppress my anger before I continued on.

“You were staring at my little sister with lecherous eyes.”

The corner of his raised into a smirk when I said that. 

“Your little sister is definitely the most beautiful commoner I’ve ever seen. But so what? I’m the second son of a count. You should be thankful to me instead!”

This time, I glared at Bern. This time, I didn’t even bother hiding my murderous intent. 

“The heck with your expression? You’re just a commoner. Or… Do you want to have a duel against me? Well, be my guest! I guess it won’t be bad to claim your beautiful little sister as mine after I defeat you and humiliates you in front of everyone.”

And so, it was decided that I would have a duel against Bern after school.
