- Chapter 7 - Change of Mind
Change of Mind
After Emi’s advice, I try my best not to trouble Souji-kun, so I refrain myself from visiting his room late at night.
I also make sure not to send messages frequently and inviting him to hang out. Instead, I only message him once a day to check on him and express my concern for his busy work schedule.
At first, I’m constantly anxious about it.
I can hardly do anything, I feel frustrated and lonely.
However, I realize that I can’t stay like this forever.
To distract myself from the anxiety, I decided to focus on my studies.
Subjects that used to be difficult for me became manageable thanks to Souji-kun’s help during our third year of middle school.
Right now, studying helps me to distract myself from the anxious and painful thoughts.
I started to focus on my studies right before my final exams, and thanks to that, I’m able to improve my ranking from the midterm exams which was really bad.
Since that day, Emi and I have been talking to each other about our feelings every once in a while.
She always listens to my anxieties and complaints, having Emi to hear my complaints has been a great help.
Back in middle school, I never imagined that I would have this kind of relationship with Emi. I used to think Emi was selfish and self-centred.
When I told her so,
“It’s because I have a beautiful and popular Onee-chan, along with a handsome, honour student senpai by my side. I will inevitably become stronger whether I like it or not.”
Emi blushed and said so.
Then, Emi talks about something that is bothering her.
“Onee-chan, both Mama and Papa are jerks. You shouldn’t trust them completely just because they are our parents. I’m sure karma will catch up to both Mama and Papa sooner or later. When the time comes, even though they are my own parents, I won’t hesitate to turn my back on them.”
I tried to get Emi tell me the reason why she said so.
“I can’t tell you that just yet.”
But Emi just simply told me so.
Certainly, since Souji-kun started to live in out house, I’ve had moments thinking,
‘Mama has such a bad personality, can’t she act toward Souji-kun a little nicer?’
However, I never went as far as thinking that she is a jerk or untrustworthy like Emi does.
Even Papa is kind to me and Emi, and I can’t imagine what could have angered Emi so much. Besides, my concerns are more focused on Souji-kun. It occupies my thoughts more than my parents. So, I don’t think much about Emi’s words about Mama and Papa.
With days passing like that, summer break begins.
Souji-kun is still busy with his part-time job, but lately, he started to respond to my messages with slightly longer messages just like before.
I feel really happy about it, however I also remind myself not to get too carried away and keep a distance from Souji-kun. So, I keep sending one message a day without pushing him to hang out with me.
During the summer vacation, since I don’t have anything to do, I secretly started a part-time job without telling Souji-kun.
I can’t prevent Souji-kun from leaving home and start to live on his own anymore. I can’t be selfish and hold him back. That’s why, I thought about how I can at least support him. Then, I came to a conclusion that he would need some money. That’s why, I asked permission from school and decided to start a part-time job at a convenience store.
