- Chapter 24 - Farewell to Onee-chan
Farewell to Onee-chan
Emi’s POV
The next day, the third semester begins, both Onee-chan and I go to school as usual.
On the first day of the third semester, Onee-chan informs the school about our parents’ divorce and that she is going to change schools.
Onee-chan and Mama are moving out in two weeks.
I wonder how is it possible to get a divorce quickly, however it seems that Mama’s mental state is quite unstable. So, maybe Mama and Papa filed their divorce promptly so that Mama can get out of the house as soon as possible while the other procedures and formalities will be sorted out later.
During the days leading up to the move, Onee-chan and I only focus on ourselves, essentially ignoring our parents.
It seems like Papa only comes home to sleep.
Meanwhile, Mama seems to spend the entire day in her room drinking alcohol.
At night, I sleep in Onee-chan’s bed with her.
Before sleeping, Onee-chan tells me many fond memories of our past. I also tell Onee-chan that I want to attend the same high school as Souji-senpai and my dreams for the future.
It seems that Onee-chan and Mama won’t live with Mama’s family there, but rather, it seems that they will be living together in an apartment.
According to Onee-chan, due to the affair that happened 16 years ago, Mama was basically disowned by her family. However, when the discussion about Mama returning home recently came up, it seems that Mama’s family somewhat softened because they know Onee-chan is coming along. However, they still won’t allow Mama to live together with them.
Come to think of it, I’ve never actually been to Mama’s family home before. I also have no memories of meeting my grandparents.
In fact, I had assumed that they had already passed away and that’s why we never visit them every year.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the day Onee-chan moving with Mama.
“Emi, take care of Souji-kun for me, okay? Keep up with your studies. Unlike me, you’re really smart, so if you work hard, you’ll be just fine.”
Onee-chan told me so on the shinkansen platform.
I have so much more I want to say to Onee-chan, but I can’t say anything because I can’t stop crying.
I only say my goodbye to Onee-chan, Mama doesn’t even look me in the eye.
With tears streaming down my face, I see Onee-chan get on the shinkansen, and watch it leave until it disappears from sight.
Afterwards, I ride Onee-chan’s bicycle which she left behind and go to Souji-senpai’s apartment.
When I tearfully tell Souji-senpai that Onee-chan has moved away with Mama today, he was really surprised because he didn’t hear anything about it from Onee-chan.
Souji-senpai tells me that he receives messages once a day from Onee-chan as usual, but they are all always about Onee-chan’s concern for Souji-senpai’s health and words of encouragement for his studies as usual, Onee-chan didn’t tell Souji-kun that she’s moving away.
Upon hearing that, Souji-senpai immediately calls Onee-chan.
“Ami-san! You moved away!? What’s going on!? Yes, I just heard it from Emi-san. No, but…of course…eh!? Wait a minute! What is going on all of the sudden! Ah…”
Onee-chan seems to end the call, and Souji-senpai is left in a daze, still holding his smartphone.
After regaining his composure, Souji-senpai says,
“Ami-san asked me to take care Emi-san…and said that she will never see me again…”
“Eh!? Wait a moment! Onee-chan didn’t say anything like that earlier!”
“I see…maybe she couldn’t bring herself tell Emi-san.”
“Onee-chan said that there are things she has to do…and something about not having the right to be your sister…”
“Doesn’t have the right…what is she thinking…”
As I talk with Souji-senpai, I begin to understand what Onee-chan has been thinking.
The right to be Souji-senpai’s sister.
Never see you again.
This means, in other words—
Onee-chan still loves Souji-senpai.
“Maybe even after knowing that we are half-siblings, Onee-chan still have feelings for Souji-senpai. I think those feelings still lingers on. That’s why she told me she doesn’t have the right to be your sister… During winter break, she taught me how to cook and do laundry. She must have already planned all of this and thought about what would happen to both me and Souji-senpai after she left.”
That’s right, on that day after she returned home to take her things.
Onee-chan started telling me to learn how to cook.
I was pretty sure there was something strange about her behaviour, but I just can’t figure it out.
“Why didn’t I notice it until now? Onee-chan was suffering by herself…I was always by her side, worrying about her, keeping an eye on her, but yet, I didn’t realize…”
Souji-senpai tries to call Onee-chan again, but it seems that she has blocked his calls.
